We will have another "Scotland" experience if we do not make sure that the top 15 (as defined by the fifteen picked this week) do not get at least one full test off this tour to freshen them up. By that I mean that they miss the game or play from the bench.
I think that dirt trackers who perform well in the Leicester and Munster games will be rewarded for the Italy test. Yeah I know we didn't scrub up too well against Italy 2 years ago and were even worse the time before that; so we shouldn't take them lightly. However I would start 5 or 6 players who weren't regular starters against them, though I would start our best props.
I doubt if it would serve to change the Hong Kong starting team against Wales and England unless poor form demands it or a bench player, or new starting player against Italy, puts forward an irresistible case.
Whatever - but the best 22 has to play against France, the best team in the NH and one which will be getting better in the next 11 months.
I don't think we can equate the 2009 Scotland result to exhaustion. We should give credit to them for playing to conditions they are used to brilliantly and tackling like demons. Sure our lads (except Palu) didn't play well, but that was principally because of them and the congenital lack of greasy/wet weather skill of Oz rugby players.
If the games at HQ or MLS are wet games we will be just as challenged as at Murrayfield last year, despite our guys being fresh.
Interesting point: will Wales back themselves and close the roof if bad weather arrives - or do what they did on one tour (2002??) and leave it open before the game. They've got some expansive players but they may weigh up our inability in wet conditions and have Stephen Jones Jonny us.
