Letter of the law says he has to start the scrum bound to a lock, and then stay bound to "the scrum" until the ball is out doesn't it?

That's my understanding. Flankers must bind with one arm to a lock prior to engagement. After that they must only stay bound to the scrum. But of course I could be wrong. The "before engagement" part was only recently added to the laws.

Just fished out the relevant law
20.3 Binding in the scrum

(f) Binding by all other players. All players in a scrum, other than front-row players, must bind on a lock’s body with at least one arm prior to the scrum engagement.
The locks must bind with the props in front of them.
No other player other than a prop may hold an opponent.

WTF?

Tom Lawton (22)
There was another shot doing the rounds that showed McCaw not bound to anybody standing at No8, the Australian No8 that is.

This one?

Had some kiwi wag over on TSF point out that McCalman wasn't correctly bound, therefore scrum over.

Scrums not over until he picks the ball up!

20.10 Ending the scrum
(c)Hindmost player unbinds. The hindmost player in a scrum is the player whose feet are nearest the team’s own goal line. If the hindmost player unbinds from the scrum with the ball at that player’s feet and picks up the ball, the scrum ends

That "and" in the law has caused all sorts of arguments on the rugby refs forum!

I'd love to know the time stamp of that shot so that we could see it in context

If they trot Dagg out this weekend then their kicking stocks will improve. Savea couldn't kick a bad habit and not sure about NMS...can he kick?

Can we expect to see B.Smith moved to 14, Dagg 15 and NMS 11? (Savea gone?)

Man, bad habits are impossible to kick!!

That's harsh !

A few times last weekend AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) had to race off his wing to shut down an overlap, I don't think Tomane can do this - he does this thing where he holds off tackling a player and runs backwards marking both until help comes. Ben Smith, Savea and NMS will calve him to shreds.

That's called drift defence, and is usually preferable because if you DON'T make it to that tackle in time, you've committed yourself and created and overlap.

They bastards thrive on it, you shouldn't EVER give them that. The rush tackle and hit looks good, but is a really low percentage play.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) went for the miracle tackle/intercept when I thought he should have held back that led to an AB try. Was surprised no one commented on it. Yes, it nearly came off and apart from that he was very good but it was low percentage stuff.

Potential changes for the weekend.........

The Wallabies side that went through their paces on Tuesday included six players not in last Saturday's XV.

They were prop Greg Holmes (in for Sekope Kepu), lock Will Skelton (for James Horwill), No. 8 Wycliff Palu (for David Pocock), five-eighth Quade Cooper (for Bernard Foley), inside centre Matt To'omua (for Matt Giteau) and winger Henry Speight (for Drew Mitchell).

But he also stopped several other promising movements where NZ had overlaps by doing the same.
To'omua does it sometimes too. Ditto Hooper.

One example being Hooper's try-saving hit on Savea, where he knocked him over the sideline, in preference to waiting and tackling him passively.

I have a feeling that Chekia's going to role out a different game plan for this weekend, with a starting back 5 of Horwill Skelton, Fardy Hooper Palu, and really throw some big bodies at them, and not attack the breakdown as much to start with.Finish with the Pooper..

What I would hate to see this week is if guys get given there shot e.g. Nic White or To'omua and we get a beating and they cope it.. It a hiding to nothing over at Eden Park.

I expect to see Speight in the backline this week, hopefully he has one of his big games.. But if this is his shot to make the RWC might be a tough ask.

.. Im excited to see the team to be honest..

Yep I remember Ewen starting that culture......meaning the bench is just as important as the run on team.....same even for the guys in the stands....because injury can happen even in warm up and players get rested all the time, and on different cycles.
If your in the SQUAD......your in the TEAM!

Loving the apparent team culture atm.players like gits n cooper....hooper n pocock......just want to be wherever they have to be for the team to be winning. Or at least playing well!

Yep get your point Jolly, and agree, I not blaming locks entirely, was just mentioning it from my days.
Pfitzy, is there a rule that says you have to bind to a second rower?? I would imagine every flanker would get penalised if there was.
