Australian Schoolboys / Under 18s 2019

All this chat of additional opportunity for lads is well and good, but I would just throw this In the mix Of discussion. I think you could find just as or more talented players in some of the b teams of certain Qld gps schools and non academy lads in first XV teams as you find at the met school trials in Qld and selections for Qld schools, where are those kids opportunities to challenge to represent this year? Plenty of kids in gps B teams from last year may well feature in 1st xv teams this year but it would appear they will miss out gaining an opportunity to represent for an academy and Qld schoolboys. Or am I missing something?

How do you have a qld schools selection carnival even before the AIC starts, 9 weeks ago ( majority of selected kids) but zero selectors at the actual games that followed over the 7 weeks later. There are kids who have well and truly played better the selected kids but they would be unknown. Couldn’t they have done the carnival last week considering the boys don’t go into training until next week. All seems arse about face.

Think that’s what MCA and the GPS headmasters thought also.

Can understand the QSS wanting to align the State Championship with being the trials for Qld Schoolboys, maybe all they had to do was move it to the last couple of days of this term , which is exactly when the trials used to be, and it could have all worked.

It is going to be interesting post Riverview to see where QLD teams end up. Personally I can’t see these team’s achieving as well as past years, but happy to be proven wrong for the future of grassroots rugby. And the big question will be if the results have any impact on next year’s Headmaster’s rights to restrict players trialling for Schoolboys’ teams.
The U18 Reds’ Academy playing Rebels’ Academy outcome on the weekend should also be compared to the Riverview results with comparative states playing (if in same pool). Let’s see what the next couple of weeks bring. Question. Is an Aus Schoolboys’ team being selected on the last day of Riverview?

So long as a student attends a school they need their HM’s permission to play in a QSSS event

For whatever the perceived advantages were GPS Schools ( and MCA in their quest to be the most dominant AIC Team in 15 years * ahem , cough , cough * ) -chose to support the QRU / Reds desire for these students not to participate on the basis that the Reds had already made decisions 6 to 9 months earlier about who were to be in their Academy. They did promise though to be fluid despite players not in the Academy having not played competitive games for 6-9 months

The End

^ Should have been named by now , they first game is next Tues , the draw is up on the Australian Schools website , but no announcement of teams . The draw looks quite different to previous years.

Absolutely, ironically I think the tournament will culminate with QLD 1 v QLD 2.

That’s pretty outrageous, given they picked 4 rep teams and a team of reserves originally from a pool of 6 Schools.
I can identify at least 8 players in the Cavaliers squad that have represented NSW (1 in Australian Youth 7s) in the past, and I expect they will give a good account of themselves next week.
There are are number of reasons some were not selected via their association - late return from injury, strong competition for spots, perhaps the player didn't suit a coaches style of play.
I am curious as to how the team selection took place. Did they have selection preference over the Combined States team? Has this diluted the prestige of Combined States' selection?
There are certainly far fewer NSW boys in Combined States than previous.
It's not ideal, but at least the Nationals will have 2 pools of 4 teams.

^ Think they rely pretty heavily on their Force Academy over there.

Yep, looks that way:

Playing three games, against the Tahs, Rebels and Brumbies academies. Some schools lads and also straight up club players, which I think is a good thing. It used to be majority PSA lads who got picked for WA but these days it's mostly the other way (apart from Aranmore kids, which has a specialist rugby programme).

Carl are you suggesting that 8 kids who missed GPS selection (they picked 5 teams from a pool of 6) have been selected ahead of those GPS teams and the CAS,ISA,CHS squads?
I can’t agree with injured players being parachuted in.
A player who’s style didn’t fit either of the 4 GPS coaches, is better than all the kids from all the other Associations, who actually trialed?
I don’t think so.
