That AB 9 played for the Wellington lions the other day i think
Saw the Southland v Wellington game yesterday. I have mentioned a few times that the Kiwis bring on their players more slowly than we do, but that opinion got turned on on its head in this game.
We talked earlier about Lima Sopoaga, the NZ Schools captain and first-five from 2009, slotting in as 10 for Wellington this year and looking as though to the manor born. Well, yesterday the Lions used TJ Perenara, this year's NZ Schools captain and half-back. Weepu had crocked himself and Mathewson took his place in the NZ EOYT team; so they were running low on 9's. You'd think they'd have a senior third stringer in the windy city, but apparently not.
The 18 y.o. threw a few ropey passes but did well otherwise. He's back to school on Monday though.
Can anybody remember a pairing of 18 and 19 year olds starting as the "halves" for a team at such a high level of rugby?
Incidentally, the commentators mentioned that Sopoaga has got a spot in the Highlanders Super squad.
Jonny O'Connor from TSS got selected by the force, slight nepotism there isn't it
Didn't he have to repeat year 12 so he could get in there first XV
Good enough, old enough
The standard unoriginal comment.
Englands newest star Ben youngs started his career at 17,
Loads of the greatest players started at 18,19,20
Recently NZ have had Toeava, cruden, rokocoko, guildford Im sure there are a couple more
England have had Wilko, matt tait, ben youngs, a few others aswell
Aus from the past three years have had, cooper, beale, JOC (James O'Connor), morahan, To'omua, genia, giteau, barnes, horne, pocock all in their national squads
Rothschild forgot about simon morahan,
Benny tapuai

Yeh he had a shoulder op or something, thats what I heard on TWFforum anyway. Do you think that Jonnny will make it?
Thanks for the update rothschild, that is good negotations by O'Connor senior. He could have been best mates with steven pocock at the force but apparently he has quit rugby due to injuries.
I wonder why he went to TSS rater than follow James to Nudgee, when James came to the force I swear that he was criticized a little bit by people for being a little greedy in matches at NC. Surprising that he got the call from the force so early when he wasn't a starter for the Aus 07 schoolboys.
Simon Morahan must have been an impressive schools player to play in the 07 TSS side when he was in year 10
I agree with Hugh that the forwards tend to have to wait longer than the backs. 9's i think can start really young, often see 18,19 year olds starting or benching in the aviva premiership
