I read my newsletter last night and was quite happy with the content, excepting the last paragraph.
There is a lot to be happy about in Australian Rugby, none of it at the Pro level to be sure, but everywhere I have been over the last two years the game has been holding its own or growing slowly, and strongly in that growth. By that I mean the growth isn't flash in the pan, gone in the next week type involvement. The crowds at the country games I am going to are bigger than last year, yes they are just the Mum's, Dad's and Grandparents watching their kids/Husbands/Boyfriends/Wives and Girlfriends running around having a game, but it is testament to a sustained growth in participation. That is my completely subjective experience, but it is supported by the RA, so I am very happy about that.
The U20s played very well and went down in a cracker of a game. So spot on there.
The approach of RA to the Folau question remains a big big problem. When people/organisation has to expound on the virtues they have displayed in dealing with a matter it does nothing to support that assertion and everything to make people question it. That is made doubly worse when in general opinion of the people/organisation in question is very suspect. Better to have said something like - 'as all would no doubt be aware the matter surrounding Israel Folau is to proceed to arbitration, and it would be inappropriate to make formal comment on this matter until due process has been completed.' To make affirmative statements of one's own actions when they are being challenged doesn't reinforce the position.
I'd also say that the responses of many here and elsewhere go to script. I would wish that people on both sides of the argument would step back a bit and assess what is actually said, and not discard everything and all initiatives because it comes from head office. The Folau saga along with the associated contracting, RUPA bullshit aside, there is a lot in that letter to be happy about.
Tomorrow is Saturday, Rugby day, - I am going to the local club's round of matches this week for my full day of Rugby. That is something to be happy about. As long as RA don't %$##$% that up they could disappear up their own &^%$ tomorrow I don't care.
