There are many ways to revisit the structure, only limited by imagination.

There is plenty to change at the ARU that need not change an understanding of the economics, but it isnt hard to imagine better marketing.

The self-preservation nature of NSW/Qld/ARU needs to be utterly destroyed as a completely negative structure that is unacceptably autocratic to the rest of rugby in Australia. ARU needs to actually think through the "A".

Your question as to how the NSWRU values (or otherwise) the SS is solid. But it flies in the face of just about all commentary here to suggest they do in fact hold much value in it. Can agree with your implication that "surely they should", but that is not the story. If they do in fact value the SS then they do not have the SS clubs and members understanding this. A fundamental problem in itself, and suggestive that the NSWRU requires re-structure with or without the ARU-NSWRU-QRU rugby cartel.

A need to trim the expenditure on players is a thought pattern limited by the shrink to greatness philosophy.

In terms of funding, RSA is pretty much maxed out. Possibly the time zone connection to Europe is capable of being expanded but would that extend to rugby being played in Aus/NZ? The country has major fiscal problems and even as playing numbers increase through the black areas this is also the poor areas and don't have much commercial strength for $expansion.

NZ $ rugby is maxed out. There is little more to squeeze from that lemon, trick is to maintain it.

In Aus, our economy is a behemoth compared to NZ/RSA. Rugby does have the issue of more football sporting competition than most nations, but the sporting $ spend here is huge. We don't need to knock over the other codes, we just need a logical approach from the ARU to squeeze of few percentage points in the hearts and minds battle. We would do very well returning to being no #2 in each state, but no #3 would also dramatically change our finance. But I don't think we need even that to be commercially successful. Each percent makes a massive difference in this huge sporting $market.

The ARU are short sighted. The NSWRU and QRU are navel gazers. Board and management are incompetent. And we are locked in to this situation because of the current structure.

That structure must change.

I think they actually made a small profit this last year. Somehow.
You're assuming that they will disappear if they go broke. I'm not. They're like the dead, hard to kill again! ;)

And I'm sure that they are looking for a little cash injection from the alleged savings from the extermination of the Force.

WA could bankrupt the ARU with $100 million lawsuit over the Western Force’s axing

The State Government has warned the Australian Rugby Union it will sue for more than $100 million in the wake of the Western Force debacle — a move that would bankrupt the cash-strapped governing body.

The escalation came as thousands of fans gathered at RugbyWA headquarters yesterday in a show of strength aimed east.

TheWest Australian can reveal the Government has told the ARU it is investigating undertakings guaranteeing the future of the Force that underpinned investment in various areas, particularly redeveloping nib Stadium.

The Government poured $95 million into the venue and $17 million into RugbyWA’s headquarters. It sponsors the Force for $1.5 million a year through the Road Safety Commission and offered to bring forward $4 million in payments for the Bledisloe Cup to be staged at the new Perth Stadium.

It is understood Premier Mark McGowan has ordered the State Solicitor’s Office to take charge of the investigation.

In a letter sent to ARU chief executive Bill Pulver on Friday, Mr McGowan said: “These investments were not made lightly and were made with the clear expectation and understanding that the Western Force would continue to participate in the Super Rugby competition.

“Therefore, the WA State Government believes the decision by the Australian Rugby Union to remove Western Force from the competition is in breach of its commitments to the people of Western Australia.

“With this in mind, I can confirm the the WA State Government is now exploring all legal options aimed at seeking compensation from the ARU.”

A Government insider said it was “not an idle threat”.

Surely gives new meaning to the phrase 'an embattled (ARU) Board' as they contemplate this new missile heading eastwards.

Embattled is one adjective you COULD use i suppose... I personally have others ;)

Things are going to get worse for them in the short term that's for sure.

All Clyne has to do is pick up the fucking phone.

This is what it boils down to isn't it. I understand there is stuff that cant be discussed due to the ongoing legal shit (although if forest is paying the lawyers he might be able to talk a bit more directly)

But the fact he wont even talk to someone who has billions in assets and cash, AND want's to assist in un-fucking the ARUs finances shows how out of touch he is with what is happening outside of the ARU's offices.

I also appreciate that not everyone should be allowed to secure a meeting with the chairman of an australian organisation. but again i go back to my second paragraph. That should be enough to get it over the line.
Pretty sure forest can spring for a red eye to sydney at the drop of a hat if Clyne was to say "yep, 10 bells tomorrow in my office"

What is it that Sanzar have over the ARU?
They are slowly but surely seeing the ARU disintegrate in front of their very eyes. It should be a time for calm heads, with World rugby chairing a meeting of the stakeholders in this unfolding drama, including the Western Force, to bash out a solution which does not keep the legal fraternity in caviar
The ARU are proving they're inept at finding a solution, and are causing massive ramifications for the rugby public in Australia.

Dru, of course. But don't make the mistake of underestimating the false hubris and base arrogance that comes from being an ex-CEO of a 'major Australian bank'. It's very typical of the genre. They often think 'we are the special ones'.

As Peter Costello said last week: the big 4 banks' high profits largely derive from being licensed by the govt as a 'quadropoly' to make sky-high margins yet the CEOs get paid as though they 'did it all themselves'.

Clyne's self-contented and 'we know best what's good and right for Australian rugby' arrogance shines through the whole of 2017's ARU debacles.

You make the assumption that they care about the ARU, in fact I am positive that there are some in the NZRU who would happily see the ARU burnt to the ground to gain their satisfaction after the 2003 RWC and Japan for 2011 RWC vote issues.

Just saw the WA Premier on the news. He's going to pursue every legal avenue to have the Force reinstated and/or recoup money spent on the basis that the Force were long term participants in super rugby. He's more than happy to send the ARU broke in the process.

Bring it on Mr McGowan, there may we be a place for you in the rugby hall of fame if you are responsible for bringing this lot down.
