Australian Rugby / RA

I personally wonder going forward what NZRU are thinking of this mess. I seriously wonder if they must be thinking that Aus rugby (or most Aus sports seemingly) is just bloody toxic, and although I know it important that they work together, I woul be just wishing quietly that they were closer to a different country if I was them. It is a shame that this seems to define Aus sports, and in normal chat I have to family back home they are just stunned how often this shit happens here!

Also they are going to involve Twiggy. This is all in this morning’s Aus BTW, their ideas are being considered by RA and an interim CEO is set to be installed.

So Twiggy is saying if they run the sport as I want, I may get on board!! Seem to recall Clive Palmer doing similar in soccer a few years back and just pulling the team/money when they didn't do things his way!

GeoRob reporting that Rennie still coming (well really that he hasn't definitely said he's going)

I found this bit just as interesting & (hopefully) important in the long run:

"Meanwhile, it appears Castle's exit won’t change RA’s support for Gus Pichot at the upcoming World Rugby elections.

"McLean made it very clear Australia and other southern hemisphere national unions would not support incumbent chairman Bill Beaumont, who is running against Pichot, the former Argentinian halfback, in next month’s World Rugby Council meetings.

"The sticking point is the Nations Championship which never got off the ground. The competition would have pitted southern and northern hemisphere teams against one another but was knocked on the head by a number of Six Nations unions who were concerned about the promotion and relegation aspect and how it could affect their revenues.

“We were very disappointed that we didn’t get the global competition up and running last year. No greater interest than self interest,” McLean said. “We thought it would have been a defining moment in our game and it was well thought through. We thought it was a no-brainer. That didn’t happen and we made it clear that we were unhappy about that and the process. We stuck together and let it be known to the northern hemisphere. We think it should be revisited sooner rather than later.”

He & the Ten Captains will get along swimmingly, then.

Yes, although the things he mentions are what we all want so no skin off my teeth. Obviously the time wasting elements of the game are out of RA’s control but happy for him to spend a couple of hundred million lobbying WR (World Rugby).

I’m a bit impartial now about the current situation and the involvement of the NFJ 10. Looking at the names, there are people there you don’t want anywhere near the management, but there are also names there who I think could add some valuable input. It should be pointed out that these blokes aren’t pushing to run the joint themselves, they are essentially a lobby group, and in fairness they do collectively hold a fair bit of intel about Australian Rugby. From the reports I’ve read they do seem to be wanting to point the sport in the right direction, the important thing is that the new RA listens to the rugby community - that’s all stakeholders from the Wallabies down to the Guerie Goats, subbies, parents, fans.

It’s also being reported that Tony Dempsey is going to have another crack at the CEO gig. The current candidates prior to any global search would seem to be:

Phil Kearns
Peter Wiggs
Tony Dempsey
Dan Herbert

It's all good them being a lobby group but the way they went about it was wrong. What was stopping them calling Paul or Raelene?

And I'm still unconvinced there's not an ulterior motive from Fox behind the whole thing

Yeah that’s what I was most upset about too, not their involvement per se. I don’t know about the Fox thing, it’s gathering momentum that NFJ is the instigator, Mark Ella almost gives that away in his piece this morning. Kearns was always going to be approached by Nick, and ironically by signing he may have ruled himself out of contention for the CEO role.

Yeah, ok.

New Zealand is perfect and absolutely nothing toxic ever happens there whatsoever.

Kearns is currently in my Alan Jones quadrant

Anything he promotes, my initial response is the say "f*ck off you c*nt" the opposite must be true
Although I’m warming to Wiggs’ CV. It’s possible to share some opinions with even polar opposites.

Agreed, but you first assume the arsehole is wrong and if you did think the same, you first question your own assumptions

KOB, can you share some of those reports with us please. So far, I really haven't seen any detail at all about the direction they want to take the game in. Some nice motherhood statements like bolstering support for the grass roots, perhaps a more locally focused competition to replace Super, but very little in the way of how these things will be put in place.

Some questions. How much monetary support can RA give to grassroots without sending themselves into bankruptcy? What will the structure of rugby below the Wallabies look like? Is it possible to have a professional level (a la Super) without away games in SA and Argentina? Will NZ cooperate with Aus in such a structure? Will there be a future for the NRC, or similar replacement? Will the Wallabies return to greatness if there is no pathway between club (including a proposed national club championship) and the international game?

I note that you predicted Raelene's demise a week or two ago, just got the timing a little out. So, maybe you have insider information that could address these questions and that you would be willing to share with the rest of us?
