Australian Rugby / RA

A lot of Welsh fans don't support any of the 4 sides, they were not happy when they reduced and their club was no longer playing in the top competition.

How interesting. Different from here I imagine where 99%* of Aus rugby fans support a province.

*Minus 10% after this year :(

Ironically it was a couple of Kiwis who pushed the current structure of welsh rugby, Graham Henry and Steve Hansen pushed hard for it when they were coaches of the national team, wanted to replicate NZs Super Rugby structure.

Maybe it has benefits for high performance, but it never completely won over the fans…

Rugby is hard to get right.

The difficult thing is that they're not just looking for some sort of domestic angle, but active participation in a foreign structure. I understand a Pontypridd fan has no reason to love the Dragons or Cardiff, but is there actually more value to anyone involved when the most likely outcome is things like a miserable early December trips to play Hartpury in the 7th v 10th fixture in the Anglo-Welsh Championship?

An interesting little snippet at the bottom of this article:

“Having been in tense battles with Rugby Australia for much of the past year, the Brumbies and head office are edging closer towards an agreement that will see the Super Rugby franchise come under control of RA, in a similar fashion to the Waratahs.”

Pretty relevant to the current conversation though.

For management of the teams - Brumbies as it is line up with Welsh model, Tahs more like the Irish model.

The governance of the union is different. We are a bit of a hybrid at the moment

I think the Brumbies were always open to centralisation, but had reservations about how it would be implemented and wanted some security over their future as part of the ACT...

McLennan's aggressive movements last year did nothing to help the cause.

The fear is that could end like the Irish system where Munster was the god some years ago and now Leinster is the man in charge. The system isn't perfect but it works for a small rugby nation and Australia has to know that currently is a small rugby nation with NSW, ACT and QLD as strongholds and WA as a the team of a billionaire

I would say in most cases it would have been to help out during the relocation process. It's more than having a free bedroom, its about having a home to come to rather than a lonely hotel room.
It’s a fairly common practice in pro sports. Most AFL clubs have host families for the interstate draftees. As you are exactly right, it’s about providing them a home and a support network as opposed to an empty apartment

The latest RA dilemma
So apparently Lalakai Foketi was going to turn out in shield for manly v gorden
But RA blocked the move as they want him to rest as a reserve to the 38 man training squad just incase
Like FMD no wonder we are hopeless and there is no connection between professional and club rugby - he should be playing rugby
Shute shield, QPR and John dent should have super player everywhere but there is very little

Yeah that's pretty ordinary - do they want our players to actually play?

Edit: I saw after I posted this that Beale played and got injured.

Except Beale, who was selected in the squad, played in the Shute Shield on the weekend…

Sooooooooo, bullshit?

One player? Name another who played?
there is very little super rugby players even playing atm
And Foketi was held back so it’s not BS
And it’s been an ongoing issue for years with pro training players not getting game time
In fairness there are only like 3 or 4 wallabies squad members attached to Shute shield clubs. 25% of them getting a release to play club is pretty good.

I noticed several other Super Rugby players, including his Waratah teammates played club rugby on the weekend…

And Beale…

It seems odd that they would select at least three other inside centres in the Wallaby squad and then not allow him to play because… reasons?

1 wallaby released in Beale
Yes it does seem odd but it’s RA so anything is possible
And with their track record over years they do like to have players not playing unlike NZ

Hospital's cup was on a full round bye this weekend, there literally weren't the games to release a lot of these guys to.
