Aussie Player Exodus

On the other hand, outside of Len and T Wright, what back played better than JS?

The punt to bring him across in the first instance has worked out. In a team that is lacking of quality in the backs, JS's introduction was immediately felt.
Agree on his impact. The cost could be that some very good players head overseas to get the sort of money RA can only pay to one player though. Both the players you mention are off contract at the end of this season - if they are still playing better than JS can RA pay anywhere near their market value? RA are already talking about trying to suppress player wages globally, which is fine if the big money wasn’t coming from privately run clubs.

Wouldn't it be great to see a player of Hooper's ability giving back to the game and playing a year in the Shute Shield. Imagine the crowds he would attract and what a thrill it would be for younger players to play with and against him.
Would be fantastic but all he really risks doing is injury. Gone are the days of players hanging around for a couple extra years. That death started with the pro game coming in.

Not directly Australian Rugby related, but it has implications for Jordan Petaia,

Welsh Test star Louis Rees-Zammit failed to make the 53-man roster for Jacksonville Jaguars and is without a team now, he could still get picked up by another NFL team... but highlights the risk/challenge of what Petaia and Louis are facing trying to make a squad.

Petaia will be back in rugby next year.

It does, but he's made a bucket load more cash even in the practice squad, and still get 100 caps for Wales

Reasonable people who follow both sports knew this was the most likely outcome. Good for him for getting paid, having a memorable time abroad, and trying his luck.

Agreed
It’s an unrealistic goal. The only sport you seem to be able to mid career convert to is an AFL ruckman.
would LRZ or JP think they could
Convert to soccer and sign with arsenal? Completely absurd and I think nfl is as absurd. Same with nba

Yeah but they get paid a bunch to try out.

Stephen Moore came back to win a premiership with UniQ, and Ben Mowen did the same at Easts - two more ex-Test captains.
Some do it sure. Adam Freier was playing until 4 years ago, Mark Gerrard was running around in the lower grades at Warringah for years but for the most part players don't continue to play like they did once upon a time.

Retirement was different when you would get picked for the state or country from Club Rugby. You didn't really retire as much as just not get picked anymore but you kept turning out for the Club and slowly go down the grades.

Much more than get paid to play rugby?. Probably not Japan or France….
It’s just to me so close to 0% probability of making it. It’s slightly less absurd than saying I’m going to give up rugby and try to make it in epl.

Base salary for a practice squad is $12500 usd per week, that's about 500k gbp per year, wouldn't be far off

Bucket load? Maximum Practice squad salary is 383k but that's with 3 years in the NFL. Starting is 225k. That's the maximum earning if you are kept for the enitre season. I'd say LRZ or Petaia are taking a cut for the chance.

Nothing really new here, but from today's Crimes...

Len Ikitau is deep in negotiations for a lucrative move to Japan, with the ACT Brumbies desperate to keep the world-class centre in Canberra.

The Brumbies No.13 has emerged as one of the premier centres in world rugby and overseas clubs have come knocking with a dollar figure to match.

Rugby Australia officials say negotiations are ongoing with the 26-year-old, and Brumbies officials hope Ikitau will reject rich offers from overseas to stay on home soil.

I could see Len playing 18 months or so in Japan. He'd be eligible to displace Kerevi as one of the 3 picks and then also be back in time for the 2027 RWC.

I wouldn't fret Slim, I'm sure there's another GPS Schoolboy the Brumbies can pinch ;)

My geography is a bit rusty, but from memory Tuggeranong is quite a large suburb with Kambah at the top near Townsville, and then it stretches down south beyond Banks to Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula.

It's quite a nursey the likes of Ikitau and Lolesio have graduated from.
