Aussie Player Exodus

Players are going to leave in greater numbers, it is inevitable. No Super Rugby change or Wallabies in Australia policy is going to stop a player from wanting to double his wages with half the travel. It's time the ARU stop wasting money on trying to keep players here and just let foreign clubs pay their wages so the ARU only have to pay them on international appearances.

Good call. Then once super rugby is so poorly followed due to the drop in quality and is a worthless tv product and the quality is so low that the development of players isn't what it once was what does the ARU do?

Players are leaving anyway, what are you going to do when to stop that reality? It's going to get worse and the reality is that the ARU cannot afford to keep throwing money at the likes of Folau or Hooper when they are going to inevitably leave anyway.

You assume that people will just stop watching if the top players aren't there, yet the A-League seems to be doing fantastic despite the fact that the best Australians play in Europe. In fact, it generates the FFA a fair bit more money than Super Rugby does for the ARU. Even your point on player development is garbage, it's the schools and a few clubs who do the majority of it anyway. It's not like the Super Rugby teams have full on academies. By the time they reach Super Rugby, they are already gifted a spot in the team because there are no foreigners and few longstanding players to make them compete for a spot.

How well would the A league be followed if there was a hybrid of it able to take all the talent and directly compete.

The ARU is seldom losing talent that is top rung. There is ample talent remaining. It's hasn't increased dramatically all of a sudden. Making the right calls for the right reasons will benefit the game, which will lead to financial benefit and greater ability to compete in the player market.

Besides, even in an even value market, some will value certain players higher than others. That's inevitable.

Discussing variances in broadcasting deals made years apart is a pointless discussion, market forces generally (can't really think of an example otherwise) dictate an increase.

This is just nonsense, sure the current policy isn't preventing all from going overseas but once they're all allowed to play for the Wallabies say goodbye to Super Rugby success of any kind.

It's sad that no Australian business is willing to fork out some big coin to sponsor Cummins and keep him in Australia. I would have thought his market value would be so much higher here that it would make up for the difference in rugby salary.

How much better do you think the A-League would be doing if it contained the best players in the world? If Messi played for Sydney FC, Ronaldo for Melbourne Victory and Neymar for Brisbane Roar?

Looking at the crowds Liverpool and Manchester Utd have attracted in Australia I think you'll find your answer.

There are more soccer fans and participants in Australia than rugby fans and participants. Not all soccer fans and participants support the A League - there are many that only really care about their team in the English Premier League.

Shit, I can understand what that is like. Bloke has a ton of balls and twice as much honor. Hope it works out best for him and his family. Nothing but respect from me after reading that.

We haven't seen the last of the Badger by the sounds of that letter

Unfortunately there isn't much chance of it working out well for his family. His Dad's prognosis is not good and CF sufferers don't always have a great life expectancy.

I understand the ARU tried to find a way to keep him here at the last minute, but they were never going to be able to compete with the money on offer.

Unfortunate that they didn't realise his value in terms of profile earlier and set him up with a long term media or marketing type income earlier - it might have helped compete with the other offer.

Really? I must have missed the bit where South Africa rugby imploded as a result of players being allowed to leave.

I wouldn't be holding South Africa up as a good example.

How is that decision benefiting SA rugby?

It's quite simple, from the position of the SARU it's worked out great.
a) They can always field their strongest team without any silly domestic player rule restricting them.
b) They don't have to pay the massive wages for their highly sought after players
c) Their Super Rugby teams can use the empty spots to give new players a run. Players like Handré Pollard might never have got a run if Morne Steyn was still there.

Who cares if their Super Rugby teams are doing average? They will simply play more kids there until they come good.

Just play more kids there until they come good. Dig yourself out of the hole. Great advice. Wall Street could have used a bloke like you during the GFC.
