$20 million/year would make it the largest sporting sponsorship in Australiasia by nearly $15million...

I doubt it is that much

Just going by what Cully posted on Twitter. He is usually pretty well informed. Maybe a typo?

hmmm you might be right.. at $20million/year that would put it almost equievelent with the soccer heavies like Chelsea and Real Madrid though... Im just not sure that it makes sense..

That would increase the NZRU income stream by 25%overnight, they would be singing from the rooftops if the deal was worth that much..

I'm with you TOCC, it makes no sense. Compare the exposure ManU gets with tiny NZ.
IMO it's more likely a $20M deal over 3 years.

I think the more likely figure is $20million over the 5 years of the deal which would still make it one of the most lucrative in Australia/New Zealand..

Don't know who told you that TOCC, but Adidas is about $20 mill a year already, and this apparently is shy of that, they reckon the next biggest sponsorship in world rugby.

Mixed feelings about this I suppose. Sad that we need an irrelevant multi-national on the jersey but glad that it brings much needed financial benefit. It is 2012 after all, it's just the way it is, a necessity. AIG has an interesting past though, having to pull out of their Man United deal for one. Having adidas as a sponsor I can understand, they are a sports company and make the kit, apparel and boots. I think they have been good for NZ rugby, despite ridiculous merchandise (replica jersey) prices. Disregard the adidas logo on the other leg of the shorts of my profile picture. lol. They do give a HUGE amount of money, more than what other countries combined kit and shirt sponsor revenues are. I guess they have it to spare given their supposed "low overheads", questionable indeed.

As for the AIG logo, it is pretty bloody ugly with the big box around it and is oversized on all the other national sides. I am quite happy they compromised on the All Black jersey though, took away the border and made it smaller. Apparently the senior players of the side had a big say in that happening. I don't think it looks too bad as it is.

Is AIG a motivational statement on front of the jumper? Am I Good?

The Darkness 7's jumper at Gold Coast Fever 7's has a different collar system than that shown above.

I've heard that the All Blacks are the 5th most recognisable sporting brand in the globe and the most succesful sporting franchise ever. Given that rugby is an Olympic sport in 2015, seems like an astute sponsorship deal for AIG. And given that sponsorship is an integral part of modern day professional sport, if the $20m amount is true, then good on NZ rugby.

Marketing firms will look at a team and place a value on the marketability of the product.. For instance, premier league clubs sit up at about $400-800million for the larger ones.. I remember reading that the AB's were valued at about $80-$100million..

Sponsorship correlates to the marketability of the club, that's why I questioned those figured suggested. That's not to say they are false, are factors can influence..

Like GM's sponsorship of Manchester United stands as a monumental corporate stuff up from GM

If The Darkness is #5 most recognisable sporting brand, what are the top 4?

According to Forbes.com, these are the top 10 Sports Brand Values in the Team Category (as opposed to Athlete, event, or business)

Just something I heard, not sure of source or veracity and have to admit I was surprised when I heard it. I immediately thought of Man U and NY Yankees but it would be interesting to get a 2012 list. Maybe there was a poll immediately after the World Cup? The top 10 you've listed is impressive although if I was to personally have had a stab at naming a top 10 recognisable team brands I would've though LA Lakers might feature.

As an aside, I also don't know how true the "most successful"label is either, but that surprised me less. Either way, if the AIG All Blacks win the Olympics, the marketing guys will be high fiving each other.

Spectator, I think you may of read that their jersey is about 4th or 5th selling in world, from what remember a couple of years back only Man U and Brazill soccer jerseys sold more, not sure if that has got as much to do with colour as brand recognition. Though I will say I was in a street market in Marseille about 5 years back and you could but only French soccer/rugby jerseys and All Black Jerseys there, nothing else.

Apparently the AIG deal does not include naming rights, still the NZ All Blacks, sevens, etc. The Adidas deal is about $20 million per annum and the AIG one is very close to this figure.

Didn't AIG sponsor Manchester United some time ago? Can someone please put up a soccer shirt with AIG featured on it.

PS. Got down to your post, Ant, after replying to FSS's earlier one, not trying to steal your thunder.

Don't worry about it mate, we'll share the glory.

No naming rights is good Bon, I don't think they would of got away with that, I all for what they done , but bugger thy
e AIG All Blacks, they are NZ All Blacks, I still cringe when I hear Qantas Wallabies, and not Australian Wallabies.
Actually Cyclo, I not even sure they can play as All Blacks in Olympics, only NZ 7s, though I maybe wrong.......
