Australian continue to under achieve in 2011 coming 4th in the Oceania Sevens. The Australian squad lost to Samoa, Fiji and Tonga at the tournament... and one must wonder... is Michael O'Connor really picking to cream of the Australian developing players for his squad? Or more to the point are the dynamics and tactics right to be a successful squad? I think O'Connor puts too much emphasis on loose forwards and not enough on quick backs and ball players. They didn't win Central Coast 7's, didnt make the final of Byron Bay 7's and ran 4th on Oceania 7's..... as one of the Worlds strongest rugby nations.... we're getting something wrong here!

Hard to make the final of a comp they aren't in.

As for Central Coast 7's they were beaten by a club that invests money into their 7's program and contained a couple of players from the Aust 7's program.

My apologies on the Byron Bay 7's. As for the Central Coast 7's, it was my understanding that those Sunnybank players were pulled into the squad after the tournament? I know I am being quite hard on the results recorded by the OZ team... considering that we really only use it as a pathway to progress to higher honors.... but with the rugby climate changing and the interest of Rugby Sevens rapidly growing... shouldn't we look to be offering fulltime contracts to help our success in this rugby form? I.E - Dj Forbes of NZ and before last year Ben Gollings for England?

Ben Adams was in the training camp with the Aussie 7's team the week before Central Coast and Danny Routledge was added after the event.

I don't disagree with what you are saying as I would love it if the Aust 7's team were a lot more successful but the way the ARU seem to use the 7's program is to develop the younger Aust rugby talent. I would hope in the next few years with the Olympics as the goal we can develop a Ben Golings style player that focuses on 7's. Someone like Richard Kingi would be great in my view.

Very good call Jets. Kingi was quite superb as a Sevens rep and has stalled a bit in the 15's game since his selection for the Wallabies a season or two ago. He would be one of the superstars of that version of the game.

Noosa 7's on this weekend. Will be interesting to see how the Aussie team go before the GC 7's in a couple of weeks.

I was there to witness it. The Aussie Team looked to have control of the game at halftime, then, all of a sudden Samu Kerevi and Lindsay Crook just turned it on for Newstar with the latter scoring a length of the field try on the buzzer to win it. Obviously both players have figured in the OZ team before and have once again been called into camp ahead of the Gold Coast 7s.

In other news the OZ Womens team demolished Tonga Womens in the final. Beating them by 53 - 0. Emily Cherry got 5 tries and is an absolute freak of a player! Laney has those girls looking sharp!

Can someone give me a background on the new players? Have heard of a couple, but would it be fair to say the bulk are Queenslanders?

Pama Fou and Lindsay Crook have been playing in Canberra.
Fou was playing at outside centre for the Wests club and they made the Grand Final.
Of Crook, I only saw him playing for Gungahlin in 2nd grade at inside centre but I'm sure others can correct the record if need be.

At Gold Coast 7's - fabled Oz side (Newstars) were pretty average - think they only beat Qld Country by 2 points - simply because the country kicker missed a sitter right in front. Players in Newstars were nothing special - they need to perform a lot better next week against the better teams

I think it didn't help that NewStar lost a few players to the Aussie squad for this weekend. Also playing 7's comps on consecutive weekends takes a lot out of the players. It would work out better if they had 2 weeks to recover (especially in the heat and humidity of QLD)

Anyone going to Crescent Head sevens this year? My club is sending two womens teams due to over interest. Hamilton girls will probably go to.
