House is on Fire

I've been watching Judah Saumaisue carve it up all season at number 8 for the Power House 1st grade in Melbourne. After watching the Georgia and Italy matches, and seeing the lack of impact from the second and back row, I simply can not fathom how he was left out of the squad.

...these players were all part of Gen Blue, Waratah academy or identified by NSW rugby....
That's the issue in a nutshell (for NSW) - players selected into Gen Blue were then auto-rolled into Waratahs Academy without checks and balances, without looking at the Shute Shield Colts later developers.

To add insult to proverbial injury, last year's NSW U19s coach chose many of his own inferior Sydney Uni players, blocking others from showcasing their abilities - the 2nd row and back row were (and still are) the weak areas for NSW from Gen Blue / Waratahs Academy.

Exactly.

Players from Syd Uni Seconds Colts were chosen into the u19 NSW squad over quality players outside of the Eastern Suburb bubble.

Brumbies won the u19 Comp.

The knock-on effect from this (for NSW) is those ignored/unseen players never had the chance to impress selectors for JWBs as N Grey only chose NSW players from Waratahs Academy (where his assistant coach is the HP Director).

Were/are they better than the Waratahs Academy incumbents? Some likely yes, especially in the back row and 2nd row, but we'll never really know.
Perhaps pre-season trials would have resolved these issues.

I think the KPIs for the Gen Blue selectors are pick the players at U15 and U16 and never change because then you selected correctly and can not be held accountable.

Who is the Assistant Coach?

The reality tho is the Gen Blue team would dust SS teams. The difference is how professional our players are the moment they leave school, it’s half baked here because we don’t have the money to pump into our players at that leave beyond a select few. SS might be the answer in another form but what it’s been historically and what it is now isn’t to standard for what’s required to develop players in a heavily professional sport in 2024. They don’t have the resources to be anything more than it currently is.

the tahs didn’t beat a Shute shield team this year. Pretty sure gen blue would get smoked

Simple equation for the Junior Wallabies. Win by 8 points and guaranteed place in the final four.

Need some serious improvement (understatement), but given Georgia played all over Ireland - who had to score after full-time to win the game - we will certainly need a bit of luck (and a dry pitch) to have a chance based on what we’ve seen so far.

Agreed - any of the top 4 SS would smash Gen Blue - nothing of note in the Waratahs Academy front 5, and a horribly weak back row. Reckon even a 'best of' SS Colts would beat them - they could trial that as an idea.

If it is wet, I reckon we'll be in trouble - dry and an outside chance.

Steve Grey criticising the Junior Wallabies / Waratahs Academy players ( especially backrow-second row) yet again on any thread going. There’s a shock. Just tell us who your boy is so we can keep an eye on him ourselves and make our own minds up if he should be there.
