Thanks for posting those lists. I don't really follow school rugby so most of those names mean nothing to me, but it is interesting to see where the different provinces sign their players from.

Personally I find it a little disappointing that 95% of the names listed come from traditionally strong rugby schools. I am worried that we might be losing out on a lot of talented players who are not identified because they are not playing for one of 25 or so schools listed above.

Boet Ja. Problem is that the top rugby schools have change so professional in their rugby coaghing and sport in general it aint even funny. Gone are the days when a laaitie will play winter and summer sport and be the best in both. These days they have to specialise in one sport to get to the top and I am talking here with own experiense. My laaitie started today his first day at GrootGim and he specialised a year ago in hockey. He play it full time and get rewarded this year. We have a rule now that the winter sports can only practise after 6. Paarl Gym first team started with their rugby summer program at the end of October and their bigger sqaud practise right through the December holidays. If you want to run with the top dogs , you need to do that extra mile at school level. Our kids are 70% hostel driven and come from all parts of SA. For the smaller schools its more about just surviving, sport and rugby is only a sideshow.

Stormers on camp at Hermanus. Schalk Burger will captain them in 2013. About his year away and the season ahead

Burger resumes DHL Stormers captaincy - Wednesday, January 16, 2013
Fit-again Springbok flanker Schalk Burger has resumed the DHL Stormers captaincy and will lead the Cape side during the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season.
Burger was the designated DHL Stormers captain last year but his 2012 campaign lasted just 14 minutes before suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Hurricanes in Round One.
DHL Stormers head coach Allister Coetzee also confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that centre Jean de Villiers would continue as the team's vice-captain.
Coetzee said: "Now that he is fit, Schalk will resume the DHL Stormers captaincy in 2013.
"We are, however, blessed with an incredibly strong leadership base in every position. Schalk will have the Springbok captain in Jean de Villiers to lean on, an Absa Currie Cup-winning captain in Deon Fourie and I haven't even mentioned the likes of Andries Bekker, Tiaan Liebenberg, Duane Vermeulen, Dewaldt Duvenage and Bryan Habana - all of whom are leaders in their positions."
The squad has been in Hermanus since Monday and the coach expressed his delight at the work done so far.
"We've upped the rugby-specific side of things this week, but we're also having a bit of fun and the guys have responded really well," said Coetzee.
"We've still got two days to go after this, including a fun adventure race on Friday, and then we will turn our attention to next month's warm-up matches."
The DHL Stormers will face the Cheetahs on February 2 (in Bloemfontein) and the Boland Cavaliers on February 9 (in Wellington).

Schalk - 'It's not about me' - Wednesday, January 16, 2013
DHL Stormers captain Schalk Burger is ready to make his comeback from injury in 2013, but the popular Springbok flanker has insisted that it's not about him.
The 29-year-old missed the 2012 season with a knee injury but he is determined to make up for lost time this year after a frustrating period spent on the sidelines.
"I'm ready to go and looking forward to it," said Burger. "Last year was a bit of a disaster; it's good to be back on a rugby field - despite the tough pre-season!
"I've just got to try to get my conditioning back to a level where I can play some good rugby again," he revealed during the team's pre-season camp in Hermanus.
"I've got a lot of energy after just about a year on the sidelines - you build up some extra motivation," he added, "also, getting back with the team makes you realise how much you miss rugby. It's just great to be running around again."
When asked about resuming the DHL Stormers captaincy this year, Burger - who will again have great mate Jean de Villiers as his deputy - added: "It's nice captaining the side again, but it's not about me.
"There's a great group of experienced leaders all around. I've really just got to do some post-match interviews and keep you guys (referring to the media) happy!"
The hard-as-nails loose forward already has 88 DHL Stormers caps to his credit but, for him, it is all about the team in 2013.
"Hopefully it will be a really successful 2013 for the Stormers. We've created many opportunities in the past to win the trophy... It's a big competition and hopefully we can put ourselves right in contention again," he said, referring to their SA Conference-winning seasons of 2011 and 2012.
"But you don't want to jump the gun; you do have to take it week by week."
DHL Stormers coach Allister Coetzee revealed that Burger would make his 'official' comeback in one of the two friendlies next month - either against the Cheetahs (on February 2) or the Boland Cavaliers (on February 9).

Taute ‘loving’ his Cape switch

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer
Hermanus - He has known, useful utility value but fullback is the firm focus of Stormers loan signing for 2013 Jaco Taute.

The Springbok, who almost seems a stalwart of first-class rugby because he was playing at that level so young for the Lions (the team to which he is still contracted) only turns 22 in March, and if he gets pigeon-holed as a No 15 for the Cape outfit that suits him just fine.

“I’ve trained fairly exclusively as fullback in early-season preparations and I must say I’m mad about it,” he confirmed at a media briefing at the squad’s training camp here on Wednesday.

Enter the Sport24 SuperBru Super Rugby challenge!

“It is great to potentially be part of a back three that includes world-class players like Bryan (Habana) and Gio (Aplon) - give either of them half a chance and they’ll be over the try-line plenty of times. I hope it will be a very dangerous (combination).”

Certainly coach Allister Coetzee has made all the right noises, in terms of Taute’s wishes, by indicating that he will overwhelmingly be viewed as a compelling candidate for the last line of defence.

At 1.90m and 98kg, he offers a timely, perhaps necessary element of height to a Stormers wings-and-fullbacks division that has sometimes lacked that advantage.

“It’s felt like a very, very good shift for me so far. They’re a top team - it’s a big challenge for me, seeing as they’ve done so well over the last couple of years; this is not just a team you can walk into and expect to (get a starting berth).

“I see myself as an attacking player and I believe that will fit in with the brand of play expected at Newlands.”

Asked about his Springbok blooding in midfield last year, and how this might affect his further Test aspirations considering his renewed desire to settle in the last line of defence, he replied diplomatically: “You will never try to dictate where you want to play if you have the honour of being chosen for the Springboks.

“But I came down here primarily because I wanted to be seen as a fullback - I do consider it my first-choice position.”

How is the Springs-born player adapting to softer pitches and the ball not travelling as far through the air?

“Well, it’s been lovely having so much more oxygen here! Running is much easier; I’m not used to that.

“Me and Elton (Jantjies) have already been working on our kicking, because it will be different circumstances; the wind and (slower pitches) ... but those are uncontrollables, and you just have to get used to them and adapt to them quickly.

“I’ve been loving the summer weather in Cape Town. It’s very different; I’ve been a Jo’burg boy my whole life but I’ve been really liking it - the people are very friendly and welcoming too. I haven’t been homesick.

“I’m studying at the same time - a B.Comm finance, entering third year - and living in Stellenbosch for the moment. You have to juggle your responsibilities, try to find time, but I’m aware that your rugby career may only last 10 years!”

Taute said he was fortunate not to be carrying any niggles from last season into 2013.

“No, I feel very fresh, after my shoulder op last year, at the end of Super Rugby. It helped to have a bit of a rest.

“I’ve had a very good pre-season, I can’t wait to get on the field. Pre-season seems to be dragging out a bit now ...”

It seems the Lions demotion is working out more and more favourably for the Stormers.

Stormers bring in a hooker

The Stormers have announced that hooker Martin Bezuidenhout will join the squad at the start of next week from the Lions as short-term cover.

With Scarra Ntubeni having had shoulder surgery this week and Tiaan Liebenberg out with a back injury, Bezuidenhout joins until the end of March.

"Martin will initially be here until the end of March, but it could be longer - depending on the fitness of Tiaan and Scarra," coach Allister Coetzee told the Stormers website.

The 23-year-old hooker has represented the Lions at every level - including two seasons of Super Rugby and the 2011 Currie Cup Final.

"As I said earlier this week, we needed a hooker with Super Rugby and big-game experience and Martin certainly fits the bill," Coetzee added.

"He also came very highly-recommended by his peers and we're looking forward to welcoming him at training on Monday and getting him up to speed with our systems."

The Lions vs Cheetahs match was on live TV. Good match the differense was that the Cheetahs used it as a warmup and the Lions to prove something. The result always will go only one way but still some excellent performances from some of the Lions newbies like Lionel Cronje and Stokkies Hanekom. Their scrum was also great. Balie Swart is now their scrum guru.

Cheetahs vs Stormers warmup
Cheetahs game a good yardstick - Monday, January 28, 2013
The DHL Stormers will play their first match of 2013 against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein this coming weekend, a game that coach Allister Coetzee feels will be a good yardstick for his side.
The Stormers have been back on deck for three weeks now - since their December recess - and they will now have a chance to flex their muscles in a match situation on Saturday (kick-off 17h00).
"The Cheetahs game will be a good indication for us," said Coetzee.
"I'm pleased with the energy in the squad at present and I'm sure the players are also looking forward to playing some rugby. You want to make sure you get confidence in your systems, confidence in the fitness and confidence in the team - you have to build up in these pre-season matches."
Coetzee revealed that hooker Deon Fourie, flanker Schalk Burger and centre Jean de Villiers were all unavailable for this weekend due to a variety of minor niggles and loose forwards Siya Kolisi and Rynhardt Elstadt were also in doubt.
Then, of course, new flyhalf Elton Jantjies is currently on personal leave after the death of his father, Thomas, at the weekend.
"It's really sad, a real tragedy for the Jantjies family and we want to support Elton in whatever way we can," said Coetzee. "Once his dad has been laid to rest, we'll assess how he feels."
Speaking about the injury niggles in the DHL Stormers squad, the coach continued: "Schalk had one session on Monday morning and has a bit of a tight calf, but one session was sufficient in terms of what he had to do in terms of his fitness.
"Jean had a cyst removed and he still has a couple of stitches in his neck. There is no need to rush him back.
"Deon Fourie took a knock on his quad and has a haematoma. It's just precautionary, as we don't want to risk him with the situation at hooker. Youngster Stephan Coetzee and Martin Bezuidenhout (who joined us at training today) will feature at hooker against the Cheetahs. Martin has fitted in nicely. He looks sharp, as he's had a game under his belt.
"Siya Kolisi is down with tonsillitis," added the Stormers boss, "we'll see how it goes on Tuesday and if he is not ready then I probably won't select him.
"Rynhardt is also still on the sidelines. I'm still not happy with the recovery of his hamstring, which he tweaked last week. It's not serious, but there is no need to push Rynhardt to play - he'll be fine for the Boland game."
Aside from Elstadt, Coetzee remains confident that all the above-mentioned players - who are carrying niggles at present - will be available for the Boland match at the Cape Town Stadium on February 9 (kick-off 14h45).
The coach concluded: "Like I've said before, the guys have to play. You have to play a certain number of minutes in order to be considered for the first game against the Bulls (on February 22)."
According to the official SuperSport website, Saturday's match between the Toyota FS Cheetahs and the DHL Stormers - dubbed the 'Free State Reconciliation Challenge' - will be televised live on SuperSport One at 17h00.

and its obvious if they can get ther new Academies in their provinces going and hold on to their talent they sure can become a power in SA Rugby in the future. Thats the differense between a new SA franchise and Australia, the culture and schoolboy base is there, only needs to grow it to the top structure. The rugby culture will provide the supporters.

Given the strength of the Kings team its hard to understand why SARU refused. The Rebels still have five international spots in the squad and no limit on how many can play in each game. Sounds like SARU politics to me, everything that can be done to make the Kings uncompetitive seems to be the going concern.

There is a lot of truth to that. The lions, despite being piss poor at rugby, making money or producing players, are still a very influential member of SARU. They are also exceptional at playing politics.

It does open a window for the Kings though. This decision suggests that SARU has decided that the same rules should apply to all the super franchises equally. Surely then the team the Lions select for their promotion/relegation match should comply to SANZAR's playing conditions. In other words Martin Bezuidenhout, Pat Cilliers, Franco Van der Merwe, Micheal Rhodes, Elton Jantjes, Lionel Mapoe and Jaco Taute should ineligible for that game on the basis that have represented other teams during the course of the season.
