I think Paddy Ryan is going to be a really excellent player. I see him becoming a bit like Dan Palmer but with more mobility and better ball running.

I think Benn Robinson will get back towards his best form too. It is still less than a year since he had a knee reconstruction. I think his scrummaging strength and general fitness will still improve a lot. I think he will be much better in 2013.

Nowadays the bloke is a joke - everyone has surpassed him. 3 tackles in 43 minutes, Alexander 13 or 14 in 80 and Slipper 13 in 37 minutes. How much time is a bloke given. He has played a full season of S15 and not fit YET - same argument with KB (Kurtley Beale) - piss ioff to clubland or hit the bitumen to get fit - not on my time watching supposed best footballers in the land.

I just want evry player, whoever, to have a huge dig for the Jersey, their teammates, and the supporters. If you don't bring your "A" games don't expect to play next week

I agree completely that Slipper should be starting ahead of him at the moment. He is well off his best.

All I said is that I expect him to get back towards his best by next year. I don't think overcoming a knee reconstruction as a prop whose body shape suggests fitness is probably always a struggle is an easy thing. Not to mention the force going through the knee in the scrum.

Poor Robinson, he didn't select himself and should not be picked because it is clear he is not 100%. Once again we have selections being made on fuck knows what, players who deserve a gig don't get one, players that don't deserve a gig do get one. Some players aren't picked becasue they aren't fit enough, yet other players who are clearly not fit or in the right state of mind are.
Slipper has been outstanding for the Reds, he is a decent scrummager and he works his arse off in general play, but can't get a start. Robinson and Alexander have been adequate all season, yet get the nod. The Wallabies would lose absolutely nothing by picking work horses like Slipper, Ryan, Holmes, Palmer. Sure they may not be experienced, but goddamit, they play with heart and enthusiasm, and sometimes that is all you need.
Over 50% of this team has not been picked on form and the results so far and quality of play backs this up.

It's a tough call.

You'd say that AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) wasn't picked on form but has been one of our better players.

Higginbotham and Dennis had excellent seasons and struggled against the All Blacks.

Samo wasn't picked on form but has provided impact each time he has come on and is now set to start.

Timani wasn't picked on form but was one of our best few players in most recent test against the All Blacks.

It works both ways.

Couldn't agree more with your criticism of Deans use of the bench. Seems everyone agrees you shouldnt have both Higgers and Samo on at the same time.

Actually, I think they should be on at the same time. 6. Higgers 7. Hooper 8. Samo. Then Dennis comes on at 6, Samo goes off, Higgers goes to 8. It looks, though, like we will see a straight swap of Samo and Higgers. That, to my mind, doesn't make a lot of sense because it puts us back in exactly the same position as the first two TRC games, just with Samo making an impact early. I think we're on a hiding to nothing playing Higgers at 8. He's our first choice 6, IMO, and needs time there to establish himself internationally. Dennis had an excellent Super Rugby season, but doesn't have the same athleticism and skill as Higgers.

Robinson was very good in his 1st half stint at Eden Park, don't see anything to complain about personally..

I agree.

His stats don't look great but he definitely had more impact on the first twenty minutes or so before he suffered the head knock than he had in previous tests.

I think he's slowly getting there.

That said, I'd still let Slipper start a test and play 60-80 minutes for once.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) I think is often the victim of being an in form player stuck in an out form team. I always have faith he will play well for the Wallabies, especially when he is playing at 13 or 15 outside of players who can attack, create and who are in form. His constant shifting of positions never allows him to put the runs on the board in any position.

It certainly does work both ways, Samo and Timani being good examples.
Higgers form from S15 warranted selection, but as a 6, not an 8. I will not judge Higgers on his form at 8 for the Wallabies, he is an adequate 8 at best, I will judge him when he has played in his best position, 6. Dennis has been rewarded for a good S15 season, but is yet to bring that form to the Wallabies. If he is selected in the 15 or 22 this week, he neeeds a blinder or he should be dropped.

Players in the Wallabies who on form, should never have been picked, in my opinion are:
Robinson, Alexander, Timani, Barnes, Horne, Beale, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) @ Wing, McCabe. The Bench, Samo, Mitchell, Phipps (though he doesn't get on), A.Fainga'a.

Of that list, only Timani and Samo have rewarded the faith shown in them, though Timani needs to bring the same effort from last game, every game going forward as a base level. I still think Schatz should have been given the opportunity over Samo a) he kept Samo out of the Reds 15 and b) he offers the Wallabies more in the long run.

Barnes was the best 10 available for the Wales series and played really well.

He deserved to retain that position for the first Bledisloe and his only bad game has been the second Bledisloe.

Horne was as good a selection as any. 13 is a problem position in Australia and no one was crying out for selection. Horne has been solid in every test. At least he has defended well.

trouble is "solid" won't cut it at 13 against the ABs, probably not against the boks and barely get it done against Wales let alone England with Tuilagi...amongst others.
Aus is very weak at 13 at the moment and I think beyond a doubt AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is the best option with Horne questionably the second best option.
I would take other players over him though, however the two in particular i would take need a bit more development (cummins, Inman and tapuai).
I really don't like Horne as a player though. i think he is the wrong sort of player for the current 13 mould. he is the type of centre that england in 2002 would have loved.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) back at centre is a good option.

The two Ben's really need to show why the coaches have shown alot of faith in them.

I don't get how people are rating Inman and Cummins as the next big things and discounting Horne. He is younger than both of them. I think he needs to learn his craft a little more and add a few more kgs of muscle bulk and he will just about be there.

I too think Tapuai is an immense talent but he is also small. He is certainly solid though.

I don't like that bench. Fainga'a and Horne replicate each other far too much. Tapaui for either one would have been much better.

I agree.

It makes the bench appear as a pecking order thing rather than a what will be the most useful...

Heyneke: Boks are underdogs

2012-09-03 22:31

Perth - The Springboks will be the underdogs when they take on Australia in the Rugby Championship in Perth on Saturday despite the hosts having lost both their matches in this year’s tournament, South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer told supersport.com on Monday.
Australia have copped a fearful bashing from the media and their supporters alike for the manner of their back-to-back 27-19 and 22-0 losses to the All Blacks with coach Robbie Deans coming under increasing pressure.

But Meyer said that Australia could never be taken for granted and pointed to their recent record against South Africa, the Wallabies have won the last four Tests between the two countries, as just one reason why the home team were the favourites heading into Saturday’s clash at Paterson’s Stadium.

“Australia are going to come out all guns blazing,” Meyer said in a wet and windy Perth on Monday.

“They are a proud team and they have been together for quite some time. I have the highest respect for Robbie Deans as a coach. There is obviously a lot of pressure on them and we are probably the underdogs.

“We don’t have a good record against them. We have lost four out of four against them, and won one out of seven, which shows how tough it is to play against Australia. Even though New Zealand beat them quite convincingly they are still a quality side,” he explained.

Meyer has come under increasing pressure himself after the Boks scrapped a 16-16 draw against Argentina in Mendoza but he said he understood the fans’ frustration and that nobody was more disappointed with the performance than he was.

“We knew that three away games were going to be tough and hopefully the guys have learnt from the Argentina game. I have high standards and I want the players to have high standards and the biggest disappointment is when you disappoint yourself.

“The team is much better than they showed (against Argentina) and I do take it personally because we want to make the whole country proud,” he explained.

There are already signs that Meyer is prepared to change his approach with the call-up of Francois Louw, a specialist openside flank, to the squad and a hint that Francois Hougaard might be shifted from scrumhalf to wing against Australia with Ruan Pienaar taking over the No 9 jumper.

“I’ve always said that we will have a horses-for-courses attitude. Hougaard gives you something different on the wing while Ruan is a little bit more experienced and he has a brilliant kicking game so he can take some of the pressure off of (flyhalf) Morné Steyn. It is not a definite thing but we are looking at that option,” he said.

Louw’s call-up to the squad has gone some way to satisfying critics who pointed to South Africa being outplayed at the breakdown by Argentina but Meyer said that, although he was pleased with what a fetcher-flank could bring to the table, the whole team had to take responsibility for the breakdown failings.

“I want the option of a specialist openside, maybe on the bench. Northern Hemisphere refs are normally a bit more lenient at the breakdown and I want us to be covered there. But I’ve said before that the whole team needs to be able to compete on the ground and at the breakdown.

“Our problem, against Argentina, was not just taking the opposition’s ball at the breakdown, it was protecting our own ball at the breakdown and that is not just the openside’s role that is the whole team’s responsibility. We need to be more effective at the breakdown, our body height should be lower and we should clean out more effectively,” he concluded.
Heinrich Brussouw will play his first match in the CC this weekend. Meanwhile Coetzee is suppose to do the role. Duanne Vermeulen will add a lot of steel and expect a big debut from him. Biggest worry is the Springbokke defense and high kick and charge gameplan.
