So is "playmaking role" now code for 5/8? Why cant he say 5/8 if thats what he means?
One could be forgiven for thinking that the use of this undefined expression was intended to avoid committing - but maybe he means, as I think he should, that JOC (James O'Connor) will be bob up at first receiver from time to time but wont wear the number 10. This may be his bets use.
But even then why can't he just say so?

Ummm, he needs more deposits in clarity?

My guess at who'll be in the run on team is based on observing that Deans doesn't seem to add to the squad and then use them straight up. He'll go for blokes who were in the squad at the end of the RWC. The additions will only be used in case of injury. He also prefers not adding to the squad unless he absolutely has to eg Samo on the wing ffs. IIRC, in the 3/4 play off AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) went to 15, Horne to 12, Ant to 13 when Beale and Quade went down? So the big adventure will be JOC (James O'Connor) at 12 and everyone else in a relatively normal pozzy. I can't see him throwing caution to the wind and chucking 2 newbies into the backline when heaps of dudes are baying for his blood.

I've said it before, but I would definatly have Lucas as the reserve scrum-half in the 22 now Burgess is gone. Genia usually plays 80minutes anyway, and Lucas is a more then capable Fullback and Fly Half cover.

I dont think its and indictment on phipps, good player i really rate him. However i agree fully on what you say, Back in 2007-8 there were whispers of a wallaby exposure for ben, who was greener than a dollar bill at the time. I thought then that it was too early, that his time would be 2009-10. I still think that, thus I believe that this opportunity came a year too late. I've rated him to be the third best half in Australia for years now...the only reason not 2nd is because unfortunately he hardly ever plays there above club level, and rode the pine for a long time after Genia took his 9 jersey at the reds and never let it go (durable as he is). I think it would be a crime not to play him (somehow) in both games this tour, at 9 or 20 partially, or his other positions if necessary.

The other thing I love about ben is that his versatility brings a couple of fascinating options to our bench. Put him in 20 and you're covered for 9, 10 (though we have backup 10's coming out our ears) and 15, allowing the following
1. 21 a specialist 12/13 and 22 a specialist wing (think weepu, sbw and Gear or e.g Lucas, Horne/AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Morahan)
2. 5/2 with just a specialist centre (Horne or AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)) or wing (assuming robbie continues to pick wingers in the middle of the park)
3. 21 and 22 outside utilities (AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Turner/Davies/Morahan/Cummins/some undiscovered dynamo etc.)
The boy comes with alot of upsides, so i just hope he can/gets the opportunity to show his wares at 9 again soon

9. Genia
10. Barnes
11. Ioane
12. Tapuai
13. Horne
14. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)
15. JOC (James O'Connor)

21. Lucas
22. Fainga'a

Fainga'a has had his go at 12 and been poor in attack, someone else needs a go.

Agree on picking Taps, but it is McCabe, not Fa'ainga who has had the biggest crack at 12.

Horne has made his case for the 13 jersey and deserves to be there, we just need to work out who to play inside him.

I must have missed that part because I only saw him play a handful of games over a couple of years between injuries, showing glimpses of promise from time to time without really making the position his own.

IMO Fainga'a and McCabe should be re-assesed after next years super rugby fixtures, if they haven't changed their attack than they shouldn't warrant selection and we should look elsewhere at form players who bring something to the team other than just good defence and a solid crash ball.

McCabe granted. Considering nobody has shone at 13 outside him, one could argue he offers limited attacking ability. Fainga'a on the otherhand... Did you happen to see the past 2 seasons of the Reds. Fainga'a was a functional member of the most exciting attacking backline in Super Rugby. While he may not be a second playmaker, obviously between the form of Will Chambers outside of him in 2010 and the wingers outside of him in 2011, he is able to play a role in a well performing attacking backline that did not limit the attacking potential of those outside of him. To refer to him as merely a crash and bash merchant is both unfair, incorrect and ill informed.

True. But we know what Fainga'a can do. This tour is going to be a bit developmental, so I would much prefer to see Tapuai thrown in. I think the guy has huge potential.

O'Connor and Barnes to share 10 - 12 positions. How good would that be. Do we have the barbarians line up already ?

Anyway I just bought tickets for the babas game. When you live in Paris, there really are no better excuses for a weekend away in London than a good game of rugby at Twickenham. True story.

Sounds good, but which one ? Denfert, Chatelet or Grand Boulevard ?
