Griquas pulling some really strong results this season other than the WP game. Look forward to seeing them in the semis.

I got it wrong, the Brutes won by a point after Naas missed the last conversation. Sorry Blou.

WP lost his first one and the Guppies now top of the log. Bismarck and Kankowski was huge in this one. I'd be surprise if both dont figure against the Wallabies.

Yeah well Spies has lost his mojo but you and I both know Duane Vermeulen is the man.

Not many take ypour Battleship back in a tackle, Duanne did this on the weekend. For some reason I expect Spies to put in a big one on the weekend against the Wallabies.

Bliksem what a disappointing weekend for WeePee and Brutes supporters. Myself went to Newlands just to see the bloody Tin Ears playing some awesome rugby and throwing the CC log open with their dogged win against WP. More surprise to see the newbies Pumas pulling off one hell of a win in the WC Poofball stadium at the Kruger National Park. Bloody hell the amount of supporters there suprised me even more then the Pumas win. Fuck knows why the Lions dont get hold of the Puma coach Jimmy Stonehouse. Hell this guy is doing excellent with a restricted player budget and seem to get this team playing excellent rugby.

Week 8 review from SARugby.net
ABSA CURRIE CUP REVIEW – WEEK EIGHT Posted: 29 August 2010

The Barloworld Toyota Pumas on Friday achieved their second victory in this season’s Absa Currie Cup after they secured a 22-21 victory over the Vodacom Blue Bulls at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
The defeat for the defending champions was their fourth loss of the 2010 competition and ensured that they ended the weekend in fourth position on the log with 24 points.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls were overtaken on the Absa Currie Cup log by the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs who handed Vodacom Western Province their first home defeat of the season during their 29-24 victory at Newlands on Friday evening.

The Bloemfontein outfit and the defending champions are both on 24 points. However the Free State side’s superior points differential (+25) over their Pretoria counterparts ensured that they ended week eight in third place.

Vodacom WP flyhalf Willem de Waal (115) who added nine points for the Cape side is still the leading points’ scorer in this season’s competition. He is however only two points clear of The Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie who is on 113.

The Cape side still currently occupies second place on the log, but their second defeat in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup has meant that they are now seven points behind the log-leading The Sharks who secured their seventh consecutive win in competition following their 48-30 victory over the GWK Griquas on Friday.

The defeat for the Kimberley side in Durban relegated them to fifth position on the 2010 Absa Currie Cup standings. They are on 23 points, but only five points behind the second positioned Vodacom WP.

The victory for The Sharks ensured that they opened up a healthy points’ gap between the rest of the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division chasing pack and themselves.

GWK Griquas winger Bjorn Basson scored four tries in this match and strengthens his lead at the top of the Absa Currie Cup Leading Try-scorers list with 13. The Sharks’ winger Lwazi Mvovo who has scored seven five-pointers, is in second position after his eight games.

In Johannesburg, the Xerox Lions kept their semi-final aspirations alive after they recorded their fourth victory in the Absa Currie Cup following their 45-22 win over the Platinum Leopards at Coca-Cola Park on Friday.

The Xerox Lions though still occupies sixth position on the log with 20 points. However the defeat for the Platinum Leopards ensured that they continued their winless run in this season’s competition. The Platinum Leopards are at the bottom of the Absa Currie Cup log with four points.

Absa Under-21 Championship – Group A

The Sharks continued their impressive run in the Absa Under-21 Championship following their comprehensive 85-5 victory over Boland in Durban on Friday. The hosts scored 13 tries which included hat-tricks from former SA Under-20 winger Sibusiso Sithole; Quinton Dormehl and Johannes Prinsloo.

Vodacom Western Province secured their sixth victory of the Absa Under-21 Championship following their 40-39 victory over the Free State Cheetahs in Cape Town on Friday. Flyhalf Gary van Aswegen kicked seven penalties and converted two of WP’s three tries to end the game with a personal points’ haul of 25.

In the other Absa Under-21 Championship game of the weekend, the Xerox Lions U21s notched up their second win in the competition following their 33-14 victory over the Platinum Leopards at Coca-Cola Park on Friday.

Absa Under-19 Championship – Group A

Vodacom WP continued their undefeated run in the Absa Under-19 championship following their 35-13 victory over the Free State at Newlands on Friday afternoon. The Cape side who are on 32 points is currently leading the Group A log and are two clear of the second placed Vodacom Blue Bulls.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls U19s comprehensively defeated the Griffons 85-12 in Welkom after they managed to score 13 five-pointers which included a penalty try at the North West Stadium. SA Under-20 scrumhalf Lohan Jacobs scored a brace as did Bradley Moolman and Abednego Mamushi.

Meanwhile the Platinum Leopards handed the Xerox Lions U19s their third defeat in the competition following their 37-36 victory over the Johannesburg side at Coca-Cola Park on Friday.

Rondebosch newbie for WP
Varsity Cup
Brache enters the Lions den

UCT star Marcel Brache has been called up to the WP bench for Friday night's Currie Cup encounter with the Lions in Johannesburg - capping a fairytale rise for the former Internal League star.

Last year this time, Brache was playing in UCT's Steinhoff Internal League for the Tornadoes - until he was spotted by Ikeys head coach John Dobson who thought he had something special.

Brache was invited to train with the Ikey Tigers Varsity Cup squad and, after impressing in a pre-season friendly against the Stormers, was handed a start in UCT's Varsity Cup opener against Shimlas.

To steal a well-used cliché, the rest - as they say - is history, with Brache featuring in every one of UCT's matches during the 2010 Varsity Cup; his elusive running, deadly defence and long-range goalkicking helping his team into the final where they went down to the Maties.

Since then, he has been training with WP - and also playing for UCT - even earning a first provincial start in a pre-season friendly against the Griffons in July.

Now, however, the talented outside back is on the verge of what would be a stunning Currie Cup debut - yet another feather in the cap of the Varsity Cup AND the Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championship.

When contacted by varsitycup.co.za this week, a clearly elated Brache said: "When my name was read out my jaw literally hit the ground!

"It's been a boyhood dream of mine [to play for WP]... Just to be in the 22 is an honour - even if I don't play."

The former Rondebosch Boys' High School pupil (who mostly played second team rugby at school - with cricket his preferred choice) played at outside centre during the Varsity Cup - with the odd game at fullback - and even turned out on the wing during the initial stages of the 2010 WP Super League for the Ikeys.

Western Province seem to rate him as a wing or fullback option, but his presence on the bench - alongside that of fellow utility, Maties ace Conrad Hoffmann - gives the Capetonians plenty of options from the pine against the resurgent Lions.

Brache and Hoffmann are amongst five Varsity Cup players on the WP bench (joining Callie Visagie, Buhle Mxunyelwa and De Kock Steenkamp), with starting backs JJ Engelbrecht, Tim Whitehead and Paul Bosch also products of this exciting tournament.

The Western Province team: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 JJ Engelbrecht, 13 Tim Whitehead, 12 Paul Bosch, 11 Frikkie Welsh, 10 Willem de Waal, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Nick Köster, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Anton van Zyl (captain), 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Deon Fourie, 1 JD Moller.
Replacements: 16 Callie Visagie, 17 Wicus Blaauw, 18 Buhle Mxunyelwa, 19 De Kock Steenkamp, 20 Pieter Myburgh, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Marcel Brache.

Kick-off: 7.10pm

PB - What do you think about referee Stuart Berry? I saw him in the Pumas v BBs and he looks like an outstanding talent.

Excuse me if you have mentioned him before.

Not a good day in the office for the Wee Pees. Lions come from behind to comprehensivly beat Province. Elton Jantjies again with a great game and MOM performance. Lambie and Jantjies both are special talents for the future, and I hope they go on the EOYT with the Boks to play for the Dirt Trackers.

Rusty we need to pray to the flyhalf gods. The same ones who have delivered great looking young tens to us over the years only for them to turn into average players as they get a bit older.

Jantjes looks very good to me. Fearless.

Billy Sheehan (19)
The only red flag for me : Both Lambie and Jantjies are only 5 foot 8 inches tall (176cm). I would love to have a 6"1' - 6'4" guy in there for defensive purposes rather than a smurf. But I guess I will settle for a smurf with twinkle toes. And Jantjies looks the goods. Great natural instincts and talent, now being honed by Carlos Spenser. I hope the Sharks coaches don't ruin Lambie by moving him all over the park like they have done in the past. Let him play flyhalf, and only flyhalf. Already he has played 15, 14, 12, and 10 in the Currie Cup this year. History repeating itself ala Ruan.

I hope the Sharks have learnt from Ruan.

Spencer mentoring a flyhalf? I hope Carlos teaches him all the stuff he didn't do too well. Like tackling and when not to try a banana kick.

Could do worse though, he is lucky to have that sort of looking after.

Ag nee WP!

And yeah I saw Marcel Brache was in the lineup, I've been following him for a bit because he played club rugby for a Rondebosch old boys team (Nadoes - www.nadoes.com ) with a friend's brother. Was good to see WP had snapped him up at the beginning of the year.

After a shit start of the day courtesy of the Boks, at least the Bulls were able to salvage some of it. Trailed Natal at the half, but a good second half performance resulted in a 40 - 36 victory. Bulls move up to 4th on the Currie Cup log. Sharks are still in 1st place with 36 points, and then WP, Free State, and the Bulls all on 28 points with the Lions at 25 in 5th place. If the Bulls had lost today, it would have been dire. NExt question. Does anyone know if the main Boks are going to play CC rugby, or get a rest? While I would love for the Bulls to get back their 8-10 best players, for the sake of the national team I hope the core group get held out and rested for the CC (and the EOYT).
