So is Bakkies still banned, not that I care but just more wondering whether it is over him or still serving his ban?

No but he is part of the contracted group of players that are not allowed to play again until the last round of the Currie Cup.

SARU though it will be a good idea to rest players who are rested.

Is Stegman broken?
Surely.

Only one surprise this weekend , the Lions beating the Sharks in the last minute. Two rounds left and a dog fight for semi and home semi spots. WP probably have the most difficult task in hand. The Lions win mean they can go top of the log if they win their last two matches but then they dont get tougher then a Brute win in the Ring and Sharks at home. Well if you want to win the CC you just have to hit form just now. The last round all the top players will be back and the Sharks have a bit of wood over them.

The Sharks’ late defeat to the Lions in a thrilling ABSA Currie Cup match at Coca Cola Park at the weekend has opened the door for Western Province – but the smart money should still be on the Durban team ending top of the log and WP second.

When Franco van der Merwe touched down – well, was adjudged to have touched down by the referee, for the video evidence afterwards suggested otherwise – and Elton Jantjes converted to give the Lions their 22-20 win, it meant that the Sharks fell back into range of WP.

The Sharks play the Leopards in Durban this week and should be expected to get a full house of five log points, so a win in Johannesburg would have enabled them to effectively sew up top spot. They have failed to do that, with WP now just four points adrift, with two matches to be played in the league phase of the competition.

However, it is going to take as massive an effort from WP to overtake the Sharks at the top as it would require from the Blue Bulls or Cheetahs to knock them out of the top two and back into third. By banking a bonus point for losing by less than seven, the Sharks effectively ensured that WP, as well as winning their remaining matches, are also going to have to get a bonus point from at least one of them if they want to end top.

WP go to Loftus to play the Bulls in what is shaping up as a massive north/south showdown this weekend, and then they host the Sharks in the last match the following week. Should WP win in Pretoria but fail to pick up a bonus point, and the Sharks do what is expected of them against the Leopards, it would leave WP needing to get five log points from the Newlands match while at the same time denying the Sharks any log points.

That would be a tough ask against one of the form teams in the competition, even given that Province will be welcoming back key Springboks for that match. Of course a five point haul from the Loftus match for WP would change the landscape considerably, as their significantly superior points difference would then leave them just needing to beat the Sharks to finish top.

Either way, thanks to the Lions victory, the way has been cleared for the last match of the league phase to have something riding on it – provided WP can win against the Bulls in Pretoria, something they haven't done since 2006.

Should they fail in that objective, then the Newlands match against the Sharks will be about something else entirely, as the Sharks would then be already assured of top and the Bulls will be in the hunt for second position. And if the Sharks opt then to take a weakened team to Cape Town, the reaction of the Bulls, who did a similar thing in the Super 14, will be interesting.

But the prospect of the Bulls squeezing into second remains a long shot mainly because of the points differential. They are five adrift of WP at the moment and will have to win with a bonus point at Loftus while denying Province a point in order to draw level on log points, but will still be behind on points differential. It would then depend on how the Bulls go in Kimberley on the same afternoon that WP host the Sharks.

The Loftus and Newlands matches are however not the only fixtures that could have a big impact on who finishes where. The Cheetahs are still in the hunt for second, as they are just one point behind the Bulls and six behind WP, and can still overtake Province if the Cape team lose both their remaining matches.

Naka Drotske’s charges won’t be taking anything for granted though as they host the resurgent Lions in Bloemfontein in the late game this coming Saturday and the way the Lions are playing at the moment the Cheetahs will have to be in their top form in order to win.

Not that the Cheetahs will be lacking confidence after their big win over the Pumas. The Cheetahs’ neighbours, Griquas, still have a faint mathematical chance of sneaking into the semis thanks to the late bonus point they garnered against WP, but it looks like they are going to pay for the missed kick that cost them a win against the Bulls in Pretoria last month.

Weekend results
Western Province 48 Griquas 32
Cheetahs 59 Pumas 24
Leopards 26 Blue Bulls39
Lions 22 Sharks 20
Just want to mention that Mitchell get it right with the Lions loose forwards. Wikus with the two tough as nails youngsters in Minnie and Strauss sure the way to go forward with the new breakdown rulings.

Franco is doing great and look more like a 7 flanker to me. He is a excellent leader and give it his all for the Lions. I do rate HalGreave , lineoutwise he is great.

Onegreat trial in the Lion vs Sharks match was the performance of the three talented youngsters. Lampie vs Jantjies and Taute. Both Jantjies and Lampie place kicking look faulty and some work there but other then that I'll give Jantjies the edge in round one. Taute surely finding his feet between the big boys and want to see him in 10 but after years of drought in the 15 and 10 positions this CC have brought through some outstanding talents in this two vital positions. In the WP vs Griquas match, three Paarl Gim scrummies in action, Marnus Hugo (2004) on the bench for Griquas and Duvenhage (2006) and Louis Schreuder (2008) for WP. Also attended a provincial U12 tournament on friday at Paarl Gym. Boland, WP, Border, EP and SWD played two teams (A & B sides) in this one and was quite surprise to see the kaalvoete skills level. Klein Gim had 6 players in WP teams and they were great. Jan Jordaan probably the biggest Bulls supporter you get and quite funny to see him playing in a WP jersey. Myself told him he look absolute great and he scored two tries in his debuut. The other WP players moaning because he took he was sleeping in a Bulls cussion in the koshuis.

My worry about Hargreaves is that surely he must be the slowest lock I have ever seen. He lumbers from ruck to ruck and makes no impact.

This weekend , two vital clashes coming up. The Catfight in Osfontein between the Tin Ears and Lions and then the big one up in the Bull Ring. You never get them bigger (Altho the Guppies dont agree) in SA then North vs South, not even friendlies or warmup matches between this two. Be it any sport from U12 to Super Rugby when they meet. The biggest rivalry in SA Rugby by a mile. All three (senior, U21,U19) WP teams can still go top of the log while the Brutes seniors fighting for a semi or maybe home semi spot. Bad news for WP is that our power fatty Wikus Blaauw joined Tiaan Liebenberg on the sideline and out for the season, while the Brutes will miss Stegman and Jeandre Kruger for this clash.

SA's balance of power at stake

Pretoria – The balance of South African rugby power in 2010 will be at stake when the Blue Bulls and Western Province meet at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The traditional clash between north and south has always been more than just a rugby game, with contrasting playing styles and philosophies also measured against one another.

Saturday’s matches will influence both teams’ log positions and can have a major influence on the rest of their Currie Cup campaigns.

These realities are also valid for both unions’ junior teams.

The Bulls and WP are playing for second place on the Currie Cup log with the potential benefit of a home semifinal at stake, while the junior teams are competing for the same privileges.

The under-19 team of the Bulls are at the top of the log - two points ahead of WP - but have played one more game than WP. A victory for the Bulls in which the visitors do not get a bonus point will ensure that they finish the season at the top of the log.

This will give them home advantage in the semifinal, though the final is traditionally played at the same venue as the Currie Cup final, irrespective of which teams play in the junior finals.

The under-21 competition is equally tough. The Bulls are five points ahead of WP and the Sharks, and can ensure the top spot with a victory, especially as WP and the Sharks clash in the last round.

The final will also be played at the same venue as the Currie Cup clash, but home advantage in the semifinal should definitely make the road to the final a little easier.

Province won all the corresponding fixtures at Newlands earlier in the season, but the stakes are higher this time.

Saturday is effectively a knockout between the senior teams, but should also provide a good indication of whether the balance of rugby power is really shifting to the South, as is believed in Cape rugby circles.

Both teams enter the morth-south derby without their contracted Boks.

While home advantage for the semifinal will be at stake, a number of experts will view this game as a forerunner for the big one later this season, with the teams possibly meeting again at full strength in either the semifinal or final.
For me as a WP supporter this is their make or break clash. I'll go as far to qoute if they beat the Brutes in the Ring they have a very good change of winning the CC this year. Thats what it will mean to them, between the ears.

ABSA CURRIE CUP PREVIEW - WEEK 13

The battle for semi-final home ground advantage in the Absa Currie Cup intensifies this weekend when the Vodacom Blue Bulls host Vodacom Western Province in this traditional north/south derby at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday at 15h00.
The defending champions are currently in third position on the log with 38 points and are five points behind their Cape opponents who are in second place with 43. Victory for Province in Pretoria will confirm their status as one of the two sides who will host an Absa Currie Cup Premier Division semi-final next month.

However, if the Vodacom Blue Bulls can defeat Vodacom WP and achieve maximum points on Saturday, and at the same time deny Allister Coetzee’s troops any log points at Loftus Versfeld, they will end the weekend level on log points with Vodacom WP (43).

Frans Ludeke’s men, who will be at full-strength for their final league game of the season against the GWK Griquas next weekend, will fancy their chances of ending the season in second position on the log as Province will have to defeat The Sharks at Newlands to retain their second place status at the end of the league phase of the competition.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls will also claim the favourites tag in preparation of Saturday clash against WP as they have regularly defeated their Cape opponents during recent clashes at Loftus Versfeld. Vodacom WP have only recorded one victory in Pretoria since 2005 when they secured a 15-10 win over the Vodacom Blue Bulls back in 2006.

The Sharks could also book themselves a home semi-final by returning to winning ways this Friday when they host the Platinum Leopards in Durban at 19h10.

The hosts who are currently in first position on the Absa Currie Cup log with 47 points conceded their third defeat in the 2010 competition last Saturday following their 22-20 loss to the Xerox Lions in Johannesburg.

Only Vodacom WP and the Vodacom Blue Bulls could mathematically relegate The Sharks from their current position on the log and deny them the opportunity of hosting a home semi-final.

The Durban side must defeat the Platinum Leopards to secure their status as one of the two sides that will host a final-four playoff match in October. The Sharks have enjoyed a good run of form against their Friday night opponents during recent seasons after winning their last four encounters since 2005.

While the focus might be on the battle for home ground advantage in the Absa Currie Cup this weekend, the attention will also be shifted to Bloemfontein on Saturday where the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs hosts the Xerox Lions at 17h05.

The hosts are currently in fourth position on the log with 37 points, only two points clear of their Johannesburg opponents who are in fifth place on 35.

This game at Vodacom Park has been billed as a “must win” game for either side if they are to remain in the running for the Absa Currie Cup semi-finals.

The Xerox Lions and the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs according to recent form are expected to secure victories in their final league games of the competition next Friday when they play the Barloworld Toyota Pumas and the Platinum Leopards respectively.

This is why Saturday’s game at Vodacom Park could determine whether the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs or the Xerox Lions will still have their semi-final aspirations in their own hands.

The GWK Griquas could mathematically still qualify for the semi-finals but will still have to hope that other results go their way in order to finish the season in the top four. The Kimberley side is in Witbank for their clash against the Barloworld Toyota Pumas on Saturday at 15h00 and will have to achieve maximum points from this fixture to keep their faint chances alive.

The Barloworld Toyota Pumas (7th) and the Platinum Leopards (8th) will compete in next month’s Absa Currie Cup promotion/relegation games.

Absa Currie Cup semi-final contenders – remaining fixtures:

The Sharks: Platinum Leopards (home), Vodacom Western Province (away)

Vodacom Western Province: Vodacom Blue Bulls (away), The Sharks (home)

Vodacom Blue Bulls: Vodacom Western Province (home), GWK Griquas (away)

Vodacom Free State Cheetahs: Xerox Lions (home), Platinum Leopards (away)

Xerox Lions: Vodacom Free State Cheetahs (away), Barloworld Toyota Pumas (home)

GWK Griquas: Barloworld Toyota Pumas (away), Vodacom Blue Bulls (home)

ABSA CURRIE CUP FIRST DIVISION PREVIEW - WEEK 12

The Eastern Province Kings and the SWD Eagles will battle it out for pole position in the Absa Currie Cup First Division this weekend when these sides meet at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Friday at 19h00.
Both teams will host semi-finals next month as well as compete in the Absa Currie Cup promotion/relegation games that will follow at the conclusion of the competition. The hosts are currently in first place on 37 points but are only two points clear of their George opponents.

The Port Elizabeth outfit and the Eagles are also aware that victory on Friday evening will set themselves up for a series of promotion/relegation clashes against the Platinum Leopards while the loser will compete against the Barloworld Toyota Pumas for promotion in to next season’s Absa Currie Cup Premier Division.

The EP Kings will be confident of securing the win as they are currently enjoying an undefeated home run during this season’s competition. They have recorded victories against the Boland Cavaliers (23-16), Border Bulldogs (49-6), Griffons (26-25) and the Valke (38-3) in games played in Port Elizabeth.

The SWD Eagles on the other hand have recorded three victories on the road in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup First Division. They beat the Border Bulldogs (17-7) in East London, the Valke (55-47) in Kempton Park and the Griffons (18-14) in Welkom. The visitors though suffered a 38-33 defeat against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington during week 10.

It was also the EP Kings who snatched a hard-fought 19-17 victory at Outeniqua Park when these sides last met in the Absa Currie Cup First Division earlier this year.

While much of the focus will be on which team will finish the season in pole position, the battle for third and fourth place will also be decided this weekend when the Boland Cavaliers host the Griffons in Wellington on Friday at 15h00.

The Welkom side is currently in third position on the log with 27 points and is three behind the Cavaliers. The Griffons have conceded four defeats this season which include loses on the road against the EP Kings (26-25) in Port Elizabeth, Border Bulldogs (22-20) in East London and SWD Eagles (42-27) in George. They recorded a 69-30 win over the Valke in Kempton Park during week seven.

The Griffons will also fancy their chances of defeating the Cavaliers in Wellington as the hosts have conceded home defeats against the Eastern Province Kings (33-22) and the Border Bulldogs (50-46). They have however defeated the SWD Eagles (38-33) and the Valke (41-21) in their other games played at the Boland Stadium in this season’s competition.

There’s also the battle for the wooden spoon in the Absa Currie Cup First Division when the Valke host the Border Bulldogs in the final league game of the season at the Barnard Stadium on Saturday at (15:00).

The hosts are currently occupying the last place on the log with nine points while their opponents from East London are on 11. The Valke have conceded home defeats this season against the Eastern Province Kings (50-35), Griffons (69-30), Boland Cavaliers (53-10) and the SWD Eagles (55-47).

The Border Bulldogs on the other hand secured a 50-46 win over the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington, but conceded a 33-12 defeat against the SWD Eagles in George, a 49-6 loss to the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth and a 48-33 defeat against the Griffons in Welkom.

For all intents and purposes, the Lions were eliminated from the Currie Cup semis with their lose to Free State this morning. The only hope in hell is that the Griquas knock off the Bulle and hold them to no bonus points. Pretty unlickly, we have seen in the past how the Bulls know how to win when there is a specific target. Also the Boks are back. That adds a bit of intrigue to the final round. How and which Springboks will feature for their provinces. The only other thing going for the last round is seeding. The Sharks basically get to choose who they play in the semi final. Will the Sharks play their A team versus Province, and assuming they win, set up a rematch the following week in the playoffs. Or do the Sharks rest their A team, and thus play (most likely) the Bulls in the semi? A Bulls team now featuring M Steyn, V Matfield, B Botha, P Spies, W Olivier rather than the Vodacom Cup guys who have been filling in? The Sharks have some thinking to do.

BTW, Ashley Johnson looked good today versus the Lions. Nice chip and recover to score his second try. Burton Francis helped lose this match for the Lions. He was a turnstile in defense. If Doppies had been playing, the Lions win.

Yes, online. Since the English soccer season started a few weeks back, all the Currie Cup rugby has been delayed by 12 to 24 hours. That's what happens when your rugby is on a channel called Fox Soccer Plus!

So you recon the Sharks can choose? Dont worry Boet we'll soften them up this weekend for your Durban semi to get a Newlands final between north and south.
