    Where to for Super Rugby?

Why would you expect him to take on the debts? I'm assuming the $35 million covers 2013 - 2017 and includes all payments including player payments? If so, then the Waratahs would have received over $35 million purely on player payments excluding anything else.

    Where to for Super Rugby?

I think it is more of what I would have as a shopping list if I were Cox. Obviously everything (bar closing the Rebels) is up for negotiation. I don't think that access to foreign players defeats the rationale for 5 teams. If the problem is that Australia doesn't have the depth (which I...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

But Australia v Saudi Arabia is now a world cup qualifying game. Compared to a friendly against Fiji. Fiji has played Australia twice in the past 10 years in Australia bringing 20,000 people in Perth in 2007 and 15,000 people in Canberra in 2010. Australia won those games 49-0 and 49-3...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

I doubt that it would have been an arms length transaction. The ARU are completely involved in so many aspects of the Rebels that I can't see them getting away with some of their statements. It is also pretty hard to be a big hitter in the market for talented players when the top up processes...

    Rebels 2017

So assuming BLR is right, then the $33 million includes the total grants to the Rebels which is then $19 million higher than the average of the other squads. So it is a massively exaggerated figure. Assuming that this is since the start of the Rebels, the number clearly doesn't take into...

I thought it was that they had the same level of popularity with the public!

    Rebels 2017

I guess I am struggling to see why the ARU are in financial trouble. It was only 2 years ago that we received a massive increase in media rights revenue from $25 million a year to $55 million a year. An extra $30 million per year. Where did that extra money go?

    Rebels 2017

Let's be honest. All teams have had significant financial trouble. The Reds were bailed out in 2010, the Force in 2016, the Tah's in previous years and the Brumbies are looking like needing one in a couple of years unless their finances massively improve. This in addition to the massively...

    Rebels 2017

Let's be honest, it is pretty much the same across the whole country. The Rebels have dropped significantly through this year but every team is way down on historical crowds. The Brumbies are struggling to get crowds much above the Rebels in a rugby city with the best performing team in the...

    Rebels 2017

I wasn't aware of that and really, it is completely irrelevant. Contracts differ from each other But they were mislead. The ARU have stated that they knew 5 teams were not sustainable back in 2011. I am sure that crowds have been impacted by the uncertainty and I am sure that the future...

    Rebels 2017

I understand the position from Imperium's point of view. As a purely private company, they would benefit from the reduction in team numbers. This would make it less likely that the ARU would try and cull the Rebels in future as well as improving the team capability (by having more to spend on...

    Rebels 2017

So has it been subsidised in the last couple of years over and above the agreement signed with Imperium? The team has been heavily impacted by the uncertainty and the inability to sign up players and (probably) get a new coach will have a long term impact on the future performance of the club...

    Rebels 2017

Are you saying that they being cruel to their players by potentially signing up the Force players and thus pushing them out of jobs? Let's be honest, there will have to be changes in the Rebels squad after this year.

    Rebels 2017

Except it is Fiji. Typically we select a slightly weaker team to give opportunities to developing players. You could easily make a case for one of Timani, Smith or Hodge to be in the starting line up.

    Rebels 2017

Sigh ... what a game that was http://www.sanzarrugby.com/superrugby/news/melbourne-rebels-unveil-2013-super-rugby-squad/ Not many in the squad from the main squad in 2013. Stirzacker, Weeks and Inman. Changing over 6-7 players a year makes building a team pretty hard

    Where to for Super Rugby?

Yes, there are private investors (ie not the unions). They seem to own 40%-50% of the team with the remainder owned by the unions

    Where to for Super Rugby?

My understanding is that yes. There are multiple owners in the Rebels who are not interested in having any form of discussions with the ARU around a sale. I don't know if Cox sold his controlling stake Actually it is very different. I am sure that the Rebels owners have signed something...

    Rebels 2018

I hope so. It would be great to see a press release a couple of hours into arbitration which basically says that the Force have a contractual right to play and the ARU has decided to retain 5 teams. I just can't believe that it is so long away.
  19. James Pettifer

    Where to for Super Rugby?

I'd say none. There are now multiple owners of the Reels (not just Cox) and I'm sure that the Vic Government's backing didn't come with a signed guarantee. That said - what does happen to the private ownership if SuperRugby goes. I note that the NZ teams are privately owned.
