    Waratahs 2020

In the SMH article on the previous page it talks about how he will work with the Defensive system that Tandy implemented with the Tahs.

If Penney can successfully introduce a more intuitive style, I wonder if that will help bring out the best in Beale. At his best he is very good with heads up rugby, has a good short passing game and is a good support runner.

Bit of a worry if both Hoopert & Fotuaika are going to miss the start of the season for injury.

    Under-20 Competitions including Oceania & World U20s

I think a lot of it has been a product of our lack of depth (and probably our lack of finances). Our super squads just haven’t had the depth or consistency of results to release their young guns. As our depth got worse, the problem has snowballed. The good news is it seems our trajectory is...

Interesting interview with Scott Fardy. https://www.theroar.com.au/2020/01/08/the-australian-view-from-across-the-water-scott-fardy/ A couple of things I found particular food for thought - - Fardy implies he heard second hand that he was on the way out of the Wallabies set up - interesting...

Is it work ethic? Genuine question. Maybe Thorn thinks he is the most likely to succeed in the longer term??

Lol - sorry, I meant Newsome.

    Waratahs 2020

Yeah, but again that isn’t what I am questioning. I’m not arguing whether Beale can do the job. I am saying I’m not convinced it’s the best way for the Tahs to deploy their available resources.

    Waratahs 2020

Ok - but that wasn’t really my point. Front foot ball or not, I don’t see a Beale’s best spot as 10. The justification for playing him there appears to be that it is best for the team whilst they take a measured approach to bringing on the young guys. I’m questioning the logic of that. I...

Not to mention he loves a break down. It is not a place you want your 10 getting stuck in too often, but it’s certainly handy to have one or both centres that can provide genuine breakdown pressure.

Aus Super Rugby players to watch in 2020

I’m really hoping Rob Valetine has an injury free year. I remember watching him in the NRC two years ago and thinking ‘wow, this kid is good’. Pro sport can be so harsh at time so I hope he gets an injury free run so we can see if he can be as good at Super Rugby level. The other 1 for me is...

    Waratahs 2020

I’m intrigued on the plans with Beale. On first look, the plan to take the pressure off Harrison & Donaldson seems fair enough. For mine, they are both wonderful young prospects and it seems to me a reasonable chance at least one of them will go on to good things if their development is...

    Reds 2020

If Reg is right about Rodda being injured you’d have to assume Salakaia-Loto will start the first game at lock. Whilst starting Wilson would be a step up, there is a vacancy to fill, he seems to have handled the challenges thrown to him so far and Thorn has shown before he will back the young...

In any case, I guess none of our opinions on either Lucas or now Maddocks are relevant to the Rebels thread.

    Rebels 2020

I guess I am hardly free from accusation of bias but, in terms of their standing as a prospect (as opposed to their actual standing right now) I agree with Bobby Sands. Not to downplay Maddocks - he’s a good, young talent but I reckon Lucas looks like he will be the better player.

Just because we don’t agree with your assessment of the situation doesn’t mean we are misguided. Australian rugby needs both a spread of talent and talented guys competing hard at State level.

    Reds 2020

Jokes aside, teams need depth and experience. LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) is a test player at both lock & 6 and, even at his young age, is one of the most experienced guys we have. He is also the incumbent. For all the promise these young guys have LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) would start ahead of them in the pecking order and it is up to one...

First Maddocks, now you want LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto). Shame NSW is reliant on poaching other teams players and doesn’t develop their own.

    Reds 2020

I’m keen to see Willson have a crack in Super rugby, but I wonder if Thorn will be tempted to use him as a finisher to start. I can see a good case for starting LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) at 6 with Wright & ASY (Angus Scott-Young) in the backrow and Rodda & Hockings or Blyth at lock with Wilson & McReight on the bench. LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) to finish...

    Rebels 2020

Of course the other side of this is that if I was the Tahs I’m not sure I’d want to give up either of them. Especially when, as BH notes, Maddocks may well come home anyway in 12 months.
