Major sponsors started dropping some time ago. Who would sponsor a team which disappears for weeks on end to another continent?

Although I'd suggest that super rugby as an inter-continental, multi-time zone product will have ever lessening value from a broadcast point of view anyway. For it's first few years, super rugby was a runaway success. I think people (me included) thought that this was going to continue...

I think it's very odd to classify a season as "disappointing" based on losing the qualifying final to get into the grand final. We're dealing with 18, 19 and 20 year old amateur sportsmen, who seemed to have lost a game that many expected them to win. That's what sport is all about. In fact...

That's pretty much my view. Big concern about what demands NZRU would make in terms of a TT competition. And I'd add that it's about time Australian rugby stood on its own two feet in terms of professional domestic rugby.

Hopefully not, but we shall see. I'd also like TRC to go back to one round and the return of long tours as part of a reformed SH season. The idea of regular 3 test tours with mid-week matches should appeal to SA, NZ and Aus.

Super Rugby defintely cooked. What emerges from the rubble will be interesting to see. Hopefully it's part of a bigger discussion which includes the place of TRC - which I think in it's 2 round format is also cooked. (for many of the same travel and time zone issues)

Because the conversation that you quoted was very specifically directed to the point of net revenue. i.e. any alternative doesn't need to be judged on whether or not it generates net revenue, just that it exists and by existing would provide a career path for players.

The critical difference in all these examples is that none of them are run by the ARU (with assistance from NSWRU and QRU);)

Only death and taxes are inevitable. NZRU don't want it. Until they do want it, it won't happen. They've been unambiguous and defintive in all their statements regarding a trans-Tasman competition for quite some time. You're free to disagree though, but that's the current position.

Which wasn't the point of discussion. A purely domestic league which also ran on the same terms (in terms of generating net revenue) as super rugby could in theory provide the same career path. In any case, I wouldn't be so sure that super rugby will continue to provide a professional...
