    Reds 2023

The video uploaded to the Reds' facebook gives a better look - it's definitely a thinner and more breathable material than the jerseys. https://fb.watch/is47SP2mD-/

A small update: the Pasifika warmup tee will be worn before every SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) and Super W fixture in 2023. Fantastic!

Reading (too much?) between the lines on a recent instagram story, it sounded like Quade is pretty optimistic about getting some game time in Japan. It'd be a minor miracle, but he's almost back running, so maybe it's not entirely out of the question.

    Concussions and Protecting Our Players

On this, I think there needs to be more serious thought given to some form of weight classification in the younger years and early-to-mid teens. Obviously there are other considerations (kids being cruel, wanting to play with mates, etc.), but a 75%+ difference sure makes it tricky to compete...

    Concussions and Protecting Our Players

Yeah it's a matter of relative risk vs cumulative risk - and as you said, the study's probably too small to draw any solid conclusions at that level. It's interesting to see the emerging trends nonetheless.

You bring in variations that reduce the risk.

Two seasons is only a small sample, but this would suggest you’re correct. Makes sense considering tackles are more frequent than scrums too. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2907385/#!po=31.0000

This is the view I hold as well, hence my question of why they should provide solutions. I understand your point that their comments add little value, but sometimes if you make enough noise, people start to listen. Also maybe worth noting some of the names mentioned (Moore and Kearns...

Realistically though, is it up to ex-players to propose solutions? There's also the issue of self-preservation - publicly offering unsolicited advice to your former / current / future employer is unlikely to be well received.

It feels like Eddie’s already done more off-season media than the last four coaches combined - and I’m absolutely here for it.

Both Daugunu and Vunivalu over Petaia is a pretty bold call given recent form

I thought Pasiami pulled it back a notch in 2022 and tried to be a bit more considered in his play - fewer run-it-straights, fewer grubbers behind the line, a bit more distribution, etc. It probably meant he was less effective than what we've seen previously, but I think it shows development in...

    Concussions and Protecting Our Players

I know of one study doing exactly this currently, so no doubt there would be many more globally. Of course these studies require decades of data collection that we'll be waiting for for some years. Data availability will become increasingly easier due to the much more rigorous concussion testing...

Agreed that it's not the best example and has very different impacts and prognoses, but it's food for thought regarding awareness and potential impact. The science isn't at a point yet where we can say with any specificity what the effects, specifically related to number of instances, are on...

I understand the stats, how they can be manipulated, and what conclusions can/cannot be drawn - I also work in and around research and have a background in psychology, social science, and biology/neuroscience. The data doesn't suggest the risk is abundantly high for an individual (and I'm not...

    Concussions and Protecting Our Players

Yes concussion is less prevalent as you go in to lower age groups, but every ~1 in 4 games (for Schoolboys) is still pretty sizeable. The fact that they accounted for over a quarter of all reported injuries at that level is further evidence that it isn't a trivial issue imo.

    Concussions and Protecting Our Players

Possibly, but my point is that lowering tackle height really isn't changing anything fundamental about the game - the tackle itself is what's fundamental, and it will live on. The game has survived (some might even say improved) off the back of numerous changes to other fundamental elements...

    Concussions and Protecting Our Players

To say an estimated 3000 concussions annually (assuming a 15wk season) "isn't a huge issue" is a pretty hot take - especially when a considerable percentage would be among developing (i.e. vulnerable) brains in younger players.
