    De-runting the backline

I was still trying to get my head around that one when Groucho raised the bar to a dizzying height: A 40kg weight difference "doesn't matter ... as long as they can defend"! For the first time in a very long time I'm wordless.

Nice to see us making the new bloke welcome.

Top 10 Scrummaging Nations in the World

A 46-6 scoreline in the Grand Final would suggest there wasn't much wrong with the game plan.

That reminds me, Blue, how I used to shake my head when Australian commentators described Benn Robinson as the best loosehead in the world. I don't recall many of them qualifying that with "arguably". He was a very competent prop until injured, and hopefully can get back to that form, but how...

    France vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

I don't think so. Their selected 15 averages 99.6kg. Our team in the England Test averaged 101.3kg. They have a couple of relatively tiny players in the half back, Morgan Parra, at 76kg, and a winger, Alexis Palisson, at 78kg. So the French are certainly not obsessed with size; they may just...

    France vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

Actually, BH, it's not. The pack averages 106.4kg. Australia's pack in the England Test averaged 110.3kg and the English 112.6kg. The only place where it is huge is in midfield where the five-eighth, Damien Traille, weighs 100kg; the inside centre, Yannick Jauzion, 105kg; and the outside centre...

    Quade Cooper and Summer Digressions

BH, are you sure you're not mixing him up with his brothers, Glasgow and Liverpool?

I also doubt very much that that methodology would work with a rib injury. I don't know how long it would be before the injured area became numb but suspect that the player might be unconscious well before then.

Blue, thank you for sticking up for us, but if "the Italian scrum was not all that dominant", I'm starting to panic as to how we will go if we come up against a genuinely dominant scrum on Saturday.

    Help! Paris Wallabies game

I don't suppose that "Joe" is short for Josephine by any chance. Failing that you're on your own

    France vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

"Wallabies halfback Will Genia will wear special padding to protect his injured ribs in his likely return to the starting line-up for Saturday night's (0645 Sunday AEDT) Test against France. "Genia has been wearing the protective guard at training since suffering the cartilage problem in the...

    Quade Cooper and Summer Digressions

ADMIRAL, you certainly couldn't be described as a compulsive poster, averaging one posting every two months. I am not one to pour scorn on the rival code or individuals and I don't know what your position is on this, but I don't feel that our code has much to learn any more from leaguies on...

    Italy vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

Thanks, Mick. On reflection most of the real thuggery on rugby fields in those times were basically sneak goes.

    Quade Cooper and Summer Digressions

TOCC, I'll see your Quade Cooper in attack and raise you Quade Cooper in defence: This photo also baffles me, how good is his balance/coordination? to allow him to make an absolute tool of himself like that. Shades of Rudolf Nureyev.

    Wallabies 9-15 20-22

Jnor, they would be much better in the reverse order. Carter will have a very big season in 2011. Notwithstanding all the ridicule he is the only genuine big 12 we have in Australia.

Nice line, Rothschild. Would you agree that Finnane was essentially a king hit merchant? When I was a young bloke anyone doing that was regarded as scum.

    Italy vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

Lance, all that I've read about Finnane or been told about him suggests that there would have been no warning.

    Italy vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

Good call, TH. However, I think it was Canno rather than Kearnsy commenting on the scrums. If not, it was the first time I have heard Kearnsy say anything useful about scrummaging. What we normally get is his side-splittingly amusing and endlessly repetitive line about "the 100 Greatest Scrums".

    Italy vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

I would have thought that the first essential for the loose head is to have a tight bind with his hooker with heads close together, and fight to maintain that. That may mean that you also fold in with the result that it is unclear who is boring in but it largely negates the benefit of what the...

    Italy vs Wallabies, EOYT 2010

Konze usually writes quite judicious comments and I have always liked Gordon Bray, although I would not consider him an authority on the scrum, so I went to the link with considerable interest. Here are Gordon's comments on the scrum contest: "The pivotal moment of Australia's match against...
