    Shute Shield 2013

Although it took them 50 years to win they were competitive for many years before 1999 and made the playoffs fairly regularly. If we're drawing a parallel with Penrith's current plight then I'd suggest it's very hard to see any light at the end of their tunnel without significant outside...

    Shute Shield 2013

I understand and accept your point. But I have seen many scrums where both teams appeared to engage early or where the difference in engagement is so slight and it is CLEAR that neither side has gained any advantage. I think there's an opportunity for the referee in these cases to delay the put...

Interesting thoughts again from Wade Kelly in this week's Wicks newsletter: "We have to let go of EGO and focus on players being able to express their talents. We have to strive for a true premiership standard, with quality teams that are equal to our Sydney NRL counterparts. We have to...

Great to get some insight from the referees point of view!! Do you think you could achieve the same outcome by signalling an advantage for an early engagement and waiting to see whether the offending team gained any advantage rather than immediately awarding a free kick?

    Pretty hot Uni backline though!

Worth a try Dave! Not sure if it would breach any anti-discrimination laws but I'm sure there'd be a way around them if it does.

Wamberal, I remember the Peter Besseling days well and if memory serves me correctly they had another tall lock who played some rep football and Fab Fenton was their coach. Henry Shaaf was also there for many years and no team looked forward to the trip to Penrith. I had a look at their honour...

    Shute Shield 2013

Wamberal, I don't dsagree with your comments. I was just trying to make the point that it's really hard to establish, develop and grow a product (let alone a sporting team) if the target audience don't want it. I noticed on Saturday that across the 4 grades there were only 4 non-islanders in the...

    Shute Shield 2013

All good suggestions about assisting Penrith. However, there's one question that still remains unanswered IMO. Does the Penrith area want a rugby team? Does anyone know how much support they get from the local newspaper, radio station, businesses etc? I noticed last Saturday that the major...

As I suggested, if they do gain an advantage then sure award a free kick, but don't blow the whistle immediately before determining whether there is any advantage. Personally, I'd be happy to see a free kick and keep the game moving if one scrum is obviously far inferior to the other rather...

Norths gained Cam Crawford (who's on the Argentine trip), Cruz Au-Nau, and Chris Tuatara-Morrison. Not sure about anyone else.

Does anyone know if any replacements were named for the 3 players who withdrew from the Argentine tour apart from McDougall?

    Shute Shield 2013

IMO many of the calls for an early engagement are totally unnecessary as no advantage has been gained, especially given the fractions of a second we are talking about. Sure it's a breach, but if no advantage why not play on. The referee could always signal an advantage but play on anyway...

Sorry, I think the camera man fell asleep whilst filming and he ended up with 50 minutes of his feet. Probably more entertaining than the game though.

Why don't we get rid of scrum penalties alltogether and just award free kicks ie no shots at goal from scrum infringements? While we're at it let's also eliminate the option of setting another scrum after a free kick. Although the old frontrowers in the crowd may have orgasms from watching...

We'll probably sneek into the playoffs (depending on other results) even if we don't win any more games (Souths away will be tough and Uni at home will probably be impossible), but a win against Norths would make us safe IMO.

The Wicks have covered for Hepetema's and Horwitz's absence on the trip to Argentina with Pete Samu (back from injury) and Tim Wright (moving from the wing) in the centres. Charlie Wakim makes his 1st grade run on debut on the wing. I'm surprised Marc Koteczky didn't get a callup and Nugget's...
