    Shute Shield 2014

Even some of the league's clubs have had to re-invent themselves and not rely on their traditional links to the NRL teams to broaden their appeal and attract members and punters. When I grew up in the St George area there was a waiting list of several years to join the club but now you can just...

    Shute Shield 2014

Have you forgotten that players like Kurtley Beale and James O'Connor went straight from school to S15. O'Connor played his first ever game of club rugby for West Harbour this year. Poker machines only make money if people play them and people only play them if they are actually in the club...

3rd tier is back in 2014 [Discontinued]

Quote from Green and Gold newsletter this morning: "The ARU have called upon rugby fans to submit possible law changes for use in the National Rugby Championship next year. ARU Bill Pulver has previously emphasised that a number of ‘innovative new rules’ would be considered for enhanced...

    Shute Shield 2014

You've answered your own question: they "used to have licenced clubs". They no longer have them because they went broke. In the Wicks case the licenced club was actually borrowing money from the rugby trust fund. The cost of running a SS club for 4 grades and 3 colts is anywhere from $500k to...

Sure, but S15 on free-to-air would be a killer.

The theory is that Foxtel have only forked out the cash to try to ensure they continue to get exclusive rights to the S15 when it comes up for review next year (ie to keep it off free to air). So it will be interesting to see the way Foxtel present the 3T and what time slot they out it in.

I thought they'd only lodged an EOI? None of the clubs will be announced until February as I understand it.

Wine has stopped me worrying about hair loss and I've been told that bathing the feet in red wine prevents tinea :)

    Shute Shield 2014

I would add the words "at the ARU" between "anyone" and "care" in your second sentence. Certainly unlikely that the clubs will receive any financial assistance from the ARU from now on. But then again from all accounts they weren't receiving much anyway. There was an interesting article on...

There was an earlier report suggesting mid-week telecast, but I wonder if that means live or delayed coverage? Certainly doesn't seem as though there will be any weekend telecast.

I love the comment "we have existing coaches and players on contract". Contracted to who? Apart from the S15 coaches and players who else is contracted to the ARU? I'd have to see the budget (although I doubt it exists yet) to believe that $3m (per year?) will cover travel, ground hire...

Yesterday's announcement hasn't cleared up my confusion about the "clubs" competing in the NRC. Are they existing premier clubs (eg Sydney University) or are they made-up clubs like last time (eg Sydney Fleet) with players from several SS clubs combined? Does anyone know for sure or is this...

    Shute Shield 2014

Yes, apparently it will also finish in August in line with the finish of the S15 season and start earlier, hence the concern about the availability of some grounds which are also used for cricket.

    Shute Shield 2013

Hey Gibbo, I'm assuming clubs like Gordon (and the Wicks) are going to be affected by the proposed earlier start to the season next year and the fact that Chatswood will still be being used for cricket. Is that your understanding and has the club discussed a workaround for this?

    Galloping Greens

Good insights Macca, thanks! I agree with you totally about the difficulty the Wicks (and most other clubs) will have cracking the top 4 as Uni, Souths, Manly and Eastwood all seem to have either the resources, the organisation and/ or the pulling power to stay at the top. They'll be hard to...

The initial announcement suggested it would be financed from the savings in closing the academies in Sydney and Brisbane and from the TV rights. But that didn't sound too convincing to me. I suspect the savings have already been spent!

Player movements for Shute Shield 2014

He's actually already been at Norths so he's missed the opportunity to increase the list of clubs. He reminds me of Dan Parks who played for West Harbour, Souths and Easts I think which gained him the nickname of Compass!
