    Shute Shield 2014

Yes, I agree completely. I'm not clear how he came to be on the ground but I don't believe he was part of the ruck / maul and he wasn't tackled with the ball so IMO (and the ref's I assume) he was OK to play the ball. I was just trying to make the point that the old adage that you're out of...

    Shute Shield 2014

I believe you're taking this out of context. If that was applied literally in every situation then a player attempting to catch a pass or a kick who fell over before completing the catch would be penalised also. I've seen this happen many times and the referee has correctly played on...

    Shute Shield 2014

If this is the relevant law then I believe he was OK ie there's nothing here that says you can't play the ball when lying on the ground if not tackled with the ball and not part of a ruck or maul: 14.1 Players on the ground (a) A player with the ball must immediately do one of three things: Get...

I don't claim to be an expert on the laws but if you're talking about the Jared Barry incident I believe he was OK. It was general play (ie he wasn't part of a ruck or maul) so he's within his rights to play the ball even if on the ground.

Unfortunately his dad says he also likes wine and although I believe he's playing with London Irish the French vineyards are not far away. BTW, he's 33 this year so must be getting near the end of his career.

    Shute Shield 2014

Roberts = 13 points Tilse = 8 points McCutcheon = 8 points So they're still well under the 100 points. Due to the vagaries of the rules they could also run a couple of high pointers on for 2 minutes in 3rd grade to qualify them as non-fresh reserves and therefore no points for 1st grade. Most...

The teams are on the NSWRU website. Tilse and McCutcheon are in for Uni, with Hodge at fullback. Douglas named for Southern, but it's Jake not Kane! Ben Batger and Grant out for Eastwood, Hingano and Woodhouse in for Manly. The benches might be interesting.

I think he actually said on the ABC game that he wasn't sure whether he qualified. The qualification rules state he doesn't have to have played any games this year as long as he was on rep duty (in Australia) and has been registered with Southern for this year and last year.

They all qualify as long as they've been registered with the club for the previous 2 seasons. They don't have to have played any games in the current season.

You might be right Gibbo, but I really have a problem with 18-19 year olds being rushed into S15. He's only played 5 1st grade games. There's also Betham and the big guy from Parra competing for the wing spot.

That's exactly what happened Dave. Randwick got off to a flying start with the wind at their backs but Manly never put up the white flag. It was only some individual brilliance from the Wicks Aussie schoolboys Hanigan (stole a line out and sprinted 50 metres to score), Short and Deegan plus...

The Wicks season was marred by a very high injury toll in the backs, not so much the forwards. It was only in the last 2 comp rounds that we were able to field the same backline -- every other game had different backlines. One of the key factors in this IMO was the relative youth and...

Not sure how the rookie is chosen but Andrew Kellaway is the best young player I've seen this year even though he only played a few games.

Sure you're not reading too much into this? I note it's dated 20/7 so it hasn't just been announced.

Dave, in the Manly games I've seen this year I found it very hard to single out any individual, the whole team just seemed to be performing at the same high level. But you've obviously seen a lot more than me. Do you really think a hooker could win given the problems front rows have with...

Any thoughts on the Catchpole Medal winner? I'll throw up Harry Bergelin, Jed Holloway, Ben Batger and Tom Hill as possibles. Jai Ayoub and Jock Merriman might not have played enough games, but have been very impressive IMO.

Come to think of it, Tristan Goodbody's had a pretty good year as well. I agree completely about TC, but I suspect he's suffering from not being considered big enough.
