ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

Fat Cat, agree strongly, the districts should work straight off the back of the JGC comp. and run a districts comp on Saturdays to rival the Saturday schools comp, so that the boys have a choice. And the base is expanded. It's not about mirroring what the league is doing but drawing from a...

ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

This attitude IS the problem. If we continue with this attitude then rugby will never be able to move on. Less than 10% of NSW and Qld boys go to rugby schools, most boys can't get the quality of these elite programs, that's what the JGC is trying to address, that's the point. It is not about...

ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

Agreed WCR. I'll add that the zones and districts MUST run their rep programs off the back of this, (to be additive and not loose momentum). My snouts tell me that the CHS is planning to work off the back of the JGC, so hopefully over the next couple of years we'll see them regain some...

    School sporting scholarships/recruitment

Guys I find your concern for the boys very touching and ethical. However I don't see this as the big issue here. As I've said before the big hurdle that Australian Rugby has to overcome is that for over 100 years rugby has been marketed and perceived as an elite sport, played by soft elites, run...

Dear Mr Knee, I also went to a private school. We were taught that honour is more important than honours. It seems to me that's what is being debated here.

ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

Agreed WCR, Having watched this stuff for the last 7 years the missing link for the non-rugby school boys is the ability to move up to a solid competition that involves high quality coaching with a solid number of good fast games. The current district/zone competitions just lack the quality and...

ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

Exactly. Then if we can get the Districts/zones to pick up the ball and take it forward with a district/zone comps with say 3 days/week training and say 5 solid rep games on saturdays that will give the clubland boys/non rugby school boys 10 good quality games before selection for high honours...

ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

You train them to be competitive. That's the idea. There is no reason to think that private school boys are genetically superior to CHS/CCC boys they just get more and better training. Solution give the CHS/CCC boys the same or better training and let the weight of numbers do its job.

No. If it was I'd be in hospital with 3rd degree burns.

Hugh, all rugby followers and players need a good understanding of the Heisenberg rugby principle (physics). Without this understanding how on earth can you enjoy rugby, scientifically inclined or not?

    Australian Junior Rugby Union

I don't mind the money thing as it is a lot cheaper than a big private rugby school. The Country guys love their dress shirt jackets etc etc which runs up a lot of the cost especially when last years stuff still fits. The Country and NSW programs are way short of what I think they should/could...

    Australian Junior Rugby Union

As a dad of one of the NSW U17 boys I've got to say that it's very disappointing that NSWJRU/AJRU/QJRU couldn't organise a simple game of rugby between NSW and Qld. The boys when selected were promise: 4 training sessions. at least 2 game ACT and probably Qld. a shot at an Australian merit...

ARU moves to kill off club player payments: A 3rd tier, club rugby and the $60k persuader

To help inform the debate here's a very good read from Southern Districts. It seems to have covered all the main points and is full of 1st hand information rather than hearsay. http://www.southerndistricts.com.au/club-news/nev-shooter-speaks-a-must-read Can't say that I agree with everything he...

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave When first we practice to deceive." I like the analogy as this is from a poem by the most famous of the Scotts, Walter Scott, about Lord Marmion's pursuit of Clara de Clare and the deception and counter deception that followed. No doubt the Scotts boys are all...

    Shute Shield 2013

Thoroughly agree with you on the funding. This is why the ARU would have to help in the early days at least. This is a proposal that would be a lot cheaper than a 3rdTier competition AND a lot of clubs pay "petrol" money already. Down here in the Illawarra a number of clubs have bought...

    Shute Shield 2013

My view is to go in the opposite direction to what is being suggested. Pay the 1st XV players for each club match payments, say $500- each a game (would have to be funded part by club part by ARU) this would cause the players to even out, pursuing the money (good old market forces). The players...

    Shute Shield 2013

As I get older ping is sounding more like beep. I remember them setting the machine up on the oval one Sunday morning, it was clear they hadn't done this very often. They were having so much fun, they were now going to actually use it measure something. The boys had to run between two points...

    Shute Shield 2013

Thoroughly agree. Here in the Illawarra I've watched the UoW get very involved in the academy of sport then the JGS (and Southern Districts all over the place as well). Universities (undergrads and post grads) love this stuff as they can practice on people, measure things with the machine that...

Australian Rugby Union (ARU) - Positivity Thread

A few weeks ago we had a very nasty injury to one of our U17s, fly half. He is OK but had to have one of his disks removed in his neck (came within a couple of millimeters). As soon as the ARU heard, they had a person down to the hospital to provide help (chaplaincy) and a signed copy of the...

    Shute Shield 2013

I thought SD gave us a text book lesson in how to handle "rush up" or "hook" defence. Rohan consistantly got in behind the outside defender who had rushed up, then cut back in field and picked up a forward runner (he didn't always need one). Then once you've stopped the hook defence pattern you...
