Continued decline in Sydney Junior Rugby

Fat Cat, The reason I started on the GAGR forum is that I was listening to the boys a few years ago who were earnestly discussing rugby future. All had come to the conclusion that you had to get a GPS scholarship (they were under 15). If you didn't you had no chance. I was taken back by this...

Continued decline in Sydney Junior Rugby

Runner, in days gone by I would agree with you, this is what JON should have done when he had the chance (and cash). However, now the ARU is desperately short of money, as ILtW points out the CHS and CCC rugby has declined dramatically (they cover 85% of the boys and girls in NSW and Qld). So...

Continued decline in Sydney Junior Rugby

IMO a $1 spent on responding to AFL moves into rugby private schools would be a $1 wasted. Why would you spend any money on 5% of the market (where you have almost as much presence as you are going to get), and ignore the 95% of the market where you have almost no presence? By far the best...

3rd tier is back in 2014 [Discontinued]

Agree Wamberal, However only the televised game on Thursday night needs to be up to "televise" standards, the other 3-4 games can be at any venue. The cost of these need to be kept to a minimum to allow the max gate money to follow to the team e.g. sounds like rat park is out. To put some...

3rd tier is back in 2014 [Discontinued]

The ARU already have sealed the finances at the top they have the FOX money signed up. The Force, Rebels, Brumbies and Sydney Uni have a low/no risk position as they already have teams and staff in place at this level. The rest will need the gate to make it work, I agree with Dave they will...

3rd tier is back in 2014 [Discontinued]

In the Illawarra Mercury today (that great bastion of quality journalism) they mentioned that the Illawarra Hawks basketball team averaged 2500 spectator to game over the last 9 years. They charge $25/ adult. I don't think they make any money. They are in an 8 team comp. travel all over (New...

Thanks for that ILtW. If that is the case it will substantially reduce the costs and hence the number of bums on seats. However if I were a S15 player on $50k/yr I would be mighty unhappy about that idea (very generous of me to work for nothing). Another $10k when you are on $50k would be a...

Bruce, I understand that the 3T team keeps the gate and ARU pays travel and accommodation and keeps the TV rights $. But to make it work at the 3T level I assume they will have to pay the players, coaches and staff and this I think will come out at something like $70k/game for both teams...

I have a different view. I think that the advantages that Sydney Uni have, will largely be neutralised by the professional nature of the 3T comp.. Sydney Uni's big advantage is that it can provide "in kind" payments that the other clubs can't. The 3T comp will allow JVs to match these "in kind"...

This all assumes that contracted player will be allowed to go to teams of their choice and not into a draft.

    School sporting scholarships/recruitment

This must have been produced by Chris Lilley and titled "Scott'ie Private School boy".

This (an extract) from the Southern District president's Christmas message. "The National Rugby Championship has been scheduled to start one week after the Shute Shield Finals. It is currently proposed to have 8 – 10 Sub-Regional teams’ 1 each from Perth, Melbourne and Canberra, two from...

3rd tier is back in 2014 [Discontinued]

Thanks Gunner, My feeling is that if this comp is going to work it is going to need something like 5000 a game. Around $100,000 at the gate. Not only the cash but because it needs to look like someone's at the game for the TV. You can do that by putting all 5000 in the stand opposite the...

4 bus trips will not be that expensive. Whenever these types of game are played in the bush by the NRL they draw good local crowds. And they usually play the 2nd string players as the top ones are on Origan duties. There is no reason why a Country team needs to be made up of country players, any...

TWaS I think your being way too negative about a NSW and Qld country team: The teams can live and train in Sydney/Brisbane. Travel to Newcastle, Wollongong is easy, it's a bus trip there and back in a day. So in a season of 4 home games 1 in the Gong 2 in Newcastle and get regional towns to bid...

I think that would be a big mistake, particularly in Sydney which is not interested in sport. I think a much better model to look at is Basket ball in Australia: It is about the level of professionalism we are looking at. It has the sort of crowds we are looking at It has about the same...

I thought that I would have a go at guessing what law changes Rupert may have negotiated for the 3T comp. The number players to be reduced to 14 by doing away with all left wingers. They cry all the time about not getting their share of the ball and free kicks, useless. The centres can stay but...

I think some are being too dismissive of a Country team in NSW and Qld. I think that the Country teams would have some very solid advantages that the city teams would find hard to match. The country teams already have established brands and tribal loyalties (we hate the City). They have...

Which Clubs are the Class of 2013 going to?

He should come back to the Woonona Shamrocks Colts (if the argument is good enough for Sydney Uni then its good enough for us) and so should Rory Davis. This would then give us: 3 NSW U17s forward (2 front rowers and a 2nd row) Rory at 1/2 Ryan Sorrel (NSW Country U17 5/8) Cory at 2nd 5/8...

ARU Junior Gold Cup - National Junior Championships

To reinforce your point last year one boy missed out on the Illawarra JGS (I thought unfairly, however the only selection I disagreed with). He worked hard, despite the disappointment, and made NSW U17 team this year. Don't give up, it's just someone's opinion on the day.
