    School sporting scholarships/recruitment

A strong year indeed - which happens from time to time at various schools - Joeys 73 (albeit they lost to my brother's crew at State), Shore 09, and a couple of Ken's (RIP) crews at Kings in the early 80's to mention a few. And not a hint of scholarships in any :-)

To be fair I recollect he came to SGS senior school at the same time as his mum - but happy to be corrected - unusual that such an excellent swimmer (and "athlete") did not feature until year 9 in an age group at SGS that was not so strong (apart from one other) prior to his appearance, which...

Back to thread. I saw Josh V running around today for Randwick. One of the first to deny an invitation to a GPS rugby academy in favour of the superior education :-) on offer at Narrabeen - he considered playing colts for Warringah was far more beneficial than a few GPS games and was part of...

Why did they row in Drummoyne colours rather than Grammar colours if it was allowed and I wasn't aware of other schools racing (which equals rowing) on Sundays in 78. Rusty looked to be coaching them (ie sitting in a tinny talking to them) from where I was sitting on the river. Funny - the...

Having Rusty Robinson as coach and rowing as Drummoyne on a Sunday helped in 78 - remind me what subject Rusty taught? Also, IIRC the 2011 Grammar stroke may have started at a different school in year 7 (but happy to be corrected - UPDATE - just checked the swimming results and, indeed, he did...

IS, seemingly Trinity and possibly BGS and Churchie are using different definitions to yours! :-) Also I thought some 5-10 years ago SGS established a quota for sons of Old Boys. A number of schools have similar policies on how donated funds are to be distributed - I have been involved in a...

First term fees paid up front. Also made Prefect - difficult to extract once you are there. Probably thought their team with so many repeaters would win - didn't bank on Scots and Kings having extremely strong 16s coming into the opens.

Anyway I have gone way off thread. Back to scholarships - any word on how New's swimming team is shaping up for next year. Word on the pool deck in 1st term was that all was not well with one of the superstars.

His nickname is captured in the title of a Rickie Lee Jones' hit from the late 70's.

Given it is the 1st Thurs of the month he is probably at the Roseville RSL as we type. Also think of the circle of life when you think family.

Hawker repeated to help them be Joint Premiers. His brother played in the 3's or 4's. One the of the 77 to 78 repeaters did so because he didn't get into desired course at Uni - but second round offers came after school started and he could of gone - a wasted year.

The family has more numerous Gordon 1sts players - should narrow it even more.

    School sporting scholarships/recruitment

Just working on a prior post that highlighted how adding strong players and taking out the weakest can significantly strengthen a team. Did not work for one school. I think the funniest case of repeating in the 70's gone wrong was Shore in 78 that had 5 guys repeating from the the 77 joint...

No names no pack drill - but one went on to play 1sts at Gordon (he told me about the repeats) - my brother-in-law played 1's 75/76 as well. Also you were making the point that there were no scholarships in the 70's only repeats - I guess lots of schools did it.

If Grammar mid 70's then we should not forget two fellas repeating from the 1974 team into a 75 team that almost pulled it off?

    Mark Lawrence Retires

Excellent game from Mark - beggars belief that he was not considered in the same class as some of the muppets at the World Cup.

Greentree, Bucknell, Reid are old time names but may not be related.

Thanks CTPE - certainly a deep and long Kings' history here with some multiple generational names in the mix. In the interest of completeness could you share with us 15 - 11 = 4 boys not mentioned and where they were in the U15s - both school and team.
