    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I thought I was talking about broadcasting of games and the associated benefits. Even when I read it again.

I agree with just about everything you've said here. I think the only place we differ is that you blame Fox for rugby being behind a pay TV paywall for 25 years and I blame the ARU/RA. They are the ones who took the Foxtel money for exclusive rights. They could have accepted less for...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

If I could suggest that one of the reasons is that nobody in any position of power in RA seems to have stopped and considered that the very concept of Super Rugby is such an outlier in terms of the way professional sport is organised around the world. Whether we look in Australia and see how NRL, AFL...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

It would be an interesting survey, although my suspicion is that there is a higher level of support on G&GR for a Super Rugby type tournament on state based teams than there is elsewhere. To my mind anything from now which uses state-based entities will end up being a Sheffield Shield type...

The bit about growing attendances is where the clubs directly benefit. A home game with a crowd of $7,000 plus is worth $60,000 or more every time it happens. Even if only half of your home games get that or close to it, the club has made $250,000 in the season. This money doesn't go through...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

The ABC made a decision in February 2015 to stop broadcasting the Shute Shield and obviously the clubs were very keen to maintain a free to air footprint, particularly as the Shute Shield is the only rugby competition broadcast on free to air in Australia. We managed to organise a free to air...

I get you don't like Foxtel/News Corp, but the head of Optus has said publicly at least twice that they were nowhere near making an offer to RA for any type of rights. I also notice that not one FTA network has yet expressed any interest in televising the upcoming 5 team Australian Super Rugby event...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Not really. The deal is that they can pay in cash or kind, so if they organise $250,000 in advertising during the telecasts then they don't pay. They've got the advertising in every year so they haven't had to pay anything. The advertising has paid for the coverage.

    Where to for Super Rugby?

It's the ultimate sporting graveyard, not even the AFL can make it work.

I actually think it was a poor decision for the SRU to agree to this. We've had a game every Saturday on FTA since TV began - first on the ABC and more recently on 7Two. I don't know why the SRU would give this up for a few extra dollars and then get put behind the pay TV wall with the rest...

    Australian Rugby / RA

He's been writing anti-rugby articles (as opposed to articles providing appropriate criticism) for thirty years.

    Australian Rugby / RA

It would seem that World Rugby have come to a similar conclusion to you. World Rugby currently holds RA’s future in its hands. A $9.5m cash advance won’t be received unless four strict conditions are met, which means more brutal cost cutting is unavoidable.

In the whole of Australia there are currently 589 active cases, 25 of which are in hospital and 5 in intensive care. Not bad in a nation of 25 million, i.e we have a one in a million chance of being admitted to hospital with it and a one in 5 million chance of ending up in ICU...

No doubt you wouldn't, but again I would assume that Foxtel would have done some research prior to making a firm offer for SS rights separate from tests and Super Rugby which they did a couple of months back. They clearly see some value in it.

I understand your position and I realise that there are many posters here who either aren't interested in club rugby or who have a passing interest at best. Generally these rugby supporters prefer as Super Rugby type product to watch which is fine. But equally, there are plenty of people I know who...

Much lower outlay for the rights and a fraction of the cameras, etc. They don't need huge ratings. If you remember when Foxtel walked away from Super Rugby they made an offer to the SRU to televise SS. The SRU have covered the $250,000 costs by attracting advertising for the telecasts for that...
