not all need to be in CBD…. But at least those other Sydney ‘suburban’ stadiums are in urban hubs with access and ammenities .

Tarneit was an urban fringe, green-field development.

MacArthur FC was also backed by a property developer Walker Corporation(ironically a rugby union fan), but they played it a bit differently and pushed to play them at Cambleton Stadium an existing stadium in the area in order to get council buy in for approval of their developments in the region.
Traneit is a hugely populated area already and is only growing. I never felt there was the demand for a second rectangular stadium in Melbourne but I understood what they were trying to do. As Western United stood no chance of success playing at AMMI with Victory and City

Is it actually there own side? It'll be a success in Canberra but I'm sure GWS aren't happy about it.
It’s not confirmed but they are bidding for the 20th license and they have the best business case for inclusion.

The West Australian Football Commission has ruled out a third WA team. Norwood has stated its intention to bid, the NT will bid and potentially Cairns.

Canberra compared to those other options is head and shoulders above regardless of the talent hotbeds in the NT. Environmentally it would be so hard to have a team there and yes they would play most of the year in the dry season but the start and ends would be touching the wet season which is chaos. That's also a hard sell to get guys up there to live long term.

With the Raiders doing well and ACT AFL side is shit for Rugby to be pushed down again like I think they will be in Perth when the NRL arrives an brings their machine with them.

Only a third WA team could compete from a business perspective but that will never happen when the WA football commission opposes the bid

Also with the 20th AFL team looking set for the ACT and 18th NRL team looking set for Perth the challenge to keep super rugby relevant is growing
AFL team in the ACT? AFL team in the ACT. I highly doubt that! With a max capacity of 13k per game due limited seating its not financially viable. The revenue is not here nor a sufficient crowd, ACT Gov are broke so there won’t be any handouts. They pay GWS to play in CBR and it’s a huge amount per game. No way an AFL team will survive in CBR. Most of the local AFL clubs have pulled out of the NSW comp as the support is just not there.

Posting this for those who didn’t see it from reddit. Shows how much the different sports orgs in Australia make in revenue each year. Look at 2003, what a wasted opportunity that was

We need to somehow build a decent professional competition in Australia
Otherwise we will fall further behind
We can’t rely on the handful of international games only and a 12 year lions boost or 20 plus year World Cup wait for a sugar hit
Don’t know how but would be great to get a comp like the nrl or AFL in aus rugby

20 years post 2003 of incompetence hasn’t helped up top but we have really stagnated
Shows there is hope from the other codes but will take decades to get back there

Interesting revenue chart but also not the best guide as we aren’t comparing apples with apples across any of the sports when you consider competition sizes and reach.

Id be interested to see a viewership comparison for the same period across those sports. For example how did the 2011 and 2014 Super Rugby finals stack up against the NRL and AFL in those respective seasons.

2014 AFL GF was around 3.7m (including regionals)

2014 NRL GF was 4m ave (including regionals). Was the Souths GF.

2014 Super Rugby 375k on Foxtel

Also need to consider that some sports take less to get noticed like Basketball here.

Owners pay almost everything to run it and they charge less to get people into the building and it seems to be working. Netball on the other hand needs the revenue to pay for everything a lot like Rugby. The NRL now gives sides 6m on top of the Salary Cap allocation of 10m. Any other revenue they can plot into whatever they like and grow the game. Which they have now separated themselves along with the AFL from anything else in Aus.

Tennis is a bit of an odd one as it’s got a world event every year that draws in all its money. If F1 was a body in each nation it would sit along side it with the Melbourne GP. Tennis Australia isn’t out there paying the way for our juniors with all that money. They slog it out themselves.

They are already committed to upgrading Manuka for GWS and the Chief Minister confirmed their interest in the 20th licence

That means nothing the Chief Minister was the one that raised a Civic (CBD) stadium 13 years ago. Makes a promise every election cycle. Government says won't start rebuild or new stadium before 2030's and Bruce has 10 years life. This was built in 1977 with upgrade & becoming rectangular in 1997 for Olympics finally in 2007 the Gregan/Larkham Stand. It is a 50 year old stadium.

Government is committing more money to women's soccer & basketball whilst baseball gets nothing & kicked out of Claxton Shield.

An AFL & AFLW would be dead in the water.

A feasibility study for potential long overdue porposed upgrades with no timeline or budget for Manuka is the upgrade that you are refering to? Then add in an off the cuff comment from a Chief Minister that everyone is mocking as ridiculous noting the ACT AFL dream has tried and failed a few time already. And on top of the if you look at the AFL criteria for Tasmania, Manuka and the ACT would struggle to even be in the conversation. None of it really credible and would be years away even if it was. It would also likey come at the cost of the Brumbies and Raiders.

This is sounds a bit like the Rebels out west story line. o_O

Going by the AFLW crowd in Canberra last night, I dont think we need to worry about a team there...
The AFLW can’t get a crowd in Melbourne

No they are currently tendering for the upgrade the eastern grandstand.

Tasmania has had so many stipulations as it is a small market with no growth and a 19th team on its own adds no value. Yet a 20th side sees an extra game per round plus allows a 10 team final system

They aren’t going to Darwin as that would require as much government funding as PNG and the West Australian football commission has ruled out a third WA side. Laugh all you want but it is a serious threat
