Aussie Player Exodus

Wasnt there a ban or limitation on new contracts due to financial constraints at the time?

Personally i think five years is good if they are a player of his potential and its not for a ridiculous sum of money.

Yeah I think they’re might have been a contract negotiation freeze. But surely it wouldn’t have been for 5years. It would have been until World Cup (3yrs max). He’s only signed for 2 years. He could be back b before then. I don’t think we’re desperate to acquire him given our winger depth.

So, I follow the Chelsea Football team which have changed owners in the last couple of years to Americans. This amongst other things has completed changed how the club offers contracts.

Boehly who owns the Dodgers and co owns Chelsea has said theyve moved from a model of 3-5 year contracts to 7-8 as it's means they don't have to constantly enter into contract negotiations with players almost every other year. They don't want players running down their contracts so they can be sold if needed.

It runs the risk of the player being given a contract and never showing the form and being stuck with them but it also frees the club up once the players have been signed to do other business.

I'm all for exploring longer contracts, but I'm not sure premier league is a good example - they aren't operating with a salary cap (or much in the way of limits for a club like Chelsea) are they? It's easier to carry the risk on long-term contracts, knowing you can always spend your way out of a hole if you make a few bad bets, that's not really an option for a) a super rugby side of very restricted spending, or b) RA with limited means relative to the global player market.

I do think we should be looking more at 4-5 year contracts then the traditional 2-3, but we really need to be careful with it and probably need to get our pathways and professional structures in order to make the most of it. Certainly in the chaos post Eddie/McLennan it would've been bloody difficult to take that punt.

I follow Chelsea too. They exploited a loophole in the rules with their 7-8 year contracts. It was nowt to do with not having to renegotiate contracts but everything to do with amortisation and FFP/PSR. Sign a player for £50,000. Amortised over 5 years, that's £10,000 per year booked against FFP/PSR. Amortised over 8 years, that's £6,250 per year. The loophole was closed, contracts are now 5 years max.

Yeah that's the financial aspect of what is being counted towards the par rules but the club are still giving out long contracts Essugo and Quenda were given 7 year contracts in the last two days.

Sort of - the new rules make it harder to just drop cash without bringing money in through player sales or revenue in sponsorship or asset sales.

United are the best example of this. Years of mismanagement has left them with few options and Ratcliffe is sacking the tea ladies to save some kind of money.

The wording on that on the tahs page is interesting:
Has signed to play for French Top 14 club, Montpellier in late 2025.

It's a bit of a weird way for a departure to leak, given they really don't do a good job of keeping those profiles up to date normally, but the way that's phrased I wouldn't be amazed if it ended up being a sabbatical or short stint similar to Ikitau's. I guess we'll probably find out more sometime this week.

Also, FWIW there are no mentions of departure on Gleeson or Heaven's profiles, despite the fact that they are already announced as leaving.

Not surprising following the rumblings at the back end of last year prior to Schmidt showing a preference for him. Schmidt stepping aside may have helped Gordons decision.... With White at 34 we are very raw on 9s depth wise though.

It wasn't just rumblings. Gordon requested an early release from his contract like some of those other Tahs/Wallabies who left last year (Holloway?), but it was denied by RA.

Looks like Matt Philip is on his way back to Aussie next season.

"Waugh has also been pleased to be signing a steady stream of new deals for Wallabies recently, following concerns about the large number of players coming off contract in 2025. Key stars such as Harry Wilson, Nick Frost and Fraser McReight have all committed to – or beyond – the 2027 World Cup. And the tournament has also started luring players home, with 31-Test lock Matt Philip set to return from Japan next season."

Fuck yeah. Always rated Philip and at 31 caps at age 31, prime time for a lock. Keen to see how he's going.

Only two seasons away to get some yen, thought he was gonna retire in the land of the rising sun. Started every game he was available for the Canon Eagles it seems.

Potentially one of the rare cases these days where the lure of the Gold jersey (and home RWC) was enough to get him to return over the cash.

My gut tells me it means Waugh is going to keep the flood gates closed for overseas players selection, as Philip likely wouldn’t be considered a priority to take one of the spots.

I have a feeling all of this is lining up to the mail that a SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) coach is going to be selected for the Wallabies job with the mantra being “we are making Australian rugby great again from within” and a focus on selecting from the SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) pool.
