Two good games today. I was lucky enough to go watch the Reds woman live. They were exceptional in the first half & up by 37 points and had the game in the bag at half time. They were all good but I will say Charlotte Caslick is looking very at home in XVs, Lori Cramer is looking at home at 10, the Forward pack were imposing, and Caitlin Urwin down the wing is impressive. She has wheels and footwork and appears fearless. It is an enormous shame that we won’t get to see Shalom Sauaso in gold later this year.

Then the Drua flipped everything in its head, took all of the momentum in the game and, at one stage got the game back to 7 points. From my point of view the Reds didn’t do a lot wrong in the second half - the Drua ladies just turned it on. I had 4 Fijians sitting next to me and they were loving it. In the end the irrepressible Layne Morgan and the unstoppable Eva Karpani combined for a try against the run of play and the Reds got enough of a buffer to get them home. A special note on both teams kickers. I haven’t checked the stats but I’m pretty sure they both got all of their kicks including a number from the sideline. In a game where so many tries were scored if one of the team’s kicker had an off day it would’ve made a big difference to the way the game panned out. I’d recommend the game to anyone who loves their rugby - but especially if you’re a Reds fan. It was great that there was a good crowd there to support the game. I hope it provides a strong financial boost for the Reds women’s program.

The Tahs v Force game was a bit more predictable in that the Tahs got out in front and then always seemed to have the game in control. The Force definitely gave a good account of themselves and the game was there to be won for about 60 minutes, but whenever the Force got a bit of momentum the Tahs ultimately had the answers. The have class everywhere and bringing them down will take some doing.

One down side - both the Tahs and Reds copped a few injuries and a few from both sides looked pretty serious so, sadly, it looks like a few very deserving women will be on the sidelines at the GF next weekend.

GF is at North Sydney oval next week. Not sure what the tickets will be but the tickets today were $10 so if you love your rugby it’s great value. I hope Sydney can get behind them and give the women the support they deserve. I’m confident you want be disappointed.

Go the Reds!!!

SRA Final:

Saturday 12/04 Blues Women v Matatu 19:05 NZST.

Blues are defending champions, Matatu won it in 2023.

Played twice in the regular season: Blues won the first 28-7, Matatu the second 37-29, the away team winning both.

Winner to play the winner of your women's GF on 17/04. Haven't seen any time or venue details yet, maybe they're waiting to see who makes it?

It was a cracking afternoon at North Sydney Oval for the Super W Grand Final.

I thought the Reds played really well and kept the game competitive for a long while. When the Reds opened the scoring in the second half to bring it back to a 5 a point game I thought it was really on.

The Tahs' class proved too much and the score got a bit lopsided late in the game. Certainly didn't reflect the closeness of the contest for a lot of the game.

Some excellent tries for the Waratahs. The interplay between G Fried, Halse and Miller was sublime and was the source of several Waratahs tries. Miller was POTM but I thought it could have just as easily been Halse. Only two weeks back from injury and she produced a close to POTM performance in the grand final.

The Tahs shut down Caslick very well. She tried all game, ran the ball well and always looked threatening but she was well covered.

Blues women v Waratahs women at NHS Thursday night. Didn't quite catch the kickoff & can't find it online but I'm assuming 7-ish NZT.

Coverage in sky is from 6:30-9:30 which suggests a 7:05 kickoff.

Could be a wet & wild night in Albany tomorrow: there's a Cat.1 cyclone heading down from the Vanuatu/ Fiji region & it's projected to track west of NZ which means it'll likely affect the top third of the North Island. Forecast is for heavy rain & wind gusting to 65km/h.

Just five days between games, both of which were grand finals. It could have been scheduled Saturday or Sunday. Probably because there were no Easter airline seats left. Piss poor organising IMO, the screams if this was a men's game would have been deafening.

Highlights

Blues made 10+ handling errors in trying to play dry-weather footy in shit weather. On a dry night I think they score 50 or 60+.

With NRLW not letting Portia play there's talk she might try for one last WC & you'd have to think she's still worth at least a squad spot.

Yep I actually watched the game too WOB. Was pretty one way traffic most of game, and was a bit impressed how well the women still manged to hold ball in those conditions. Was quite pleased in end when Tahs women scored , as they very much spent a lot of night trying to tackle the wave of Blue that came at them. So was happy to see them sneak in one try. Quite a difference in skill and physicality level between the teams?

Also I laughed those kids in the Red jackets all from Horowhenua College up there for some reason, why they sat out in open and not further up in stand? Levib kids huh?? :D

You've spelled "other Levin" completely wrong there Dan...

Did I hear correctly that Carlos had something to do with getting them into the ground? Something about them already being up that way for a game or games? If so he's just acquired a heap of nieces.

Tahs playing on a Thursday after winning a GF on a Saturday isn't really the most ideal prep especially when to have to travel to NZ and play in those conditions.

I don't know much about the Blues team but were they much different from the team that played the tahs in the trials?
