Apparently Braam Van Stratten has accepted a contract with the Wobs to become their full time kicking coach. He has said he will be joining them in October on contract with a view to becoming full time next year. Good news if the kicking on the weekend is anything to go by.

a kicking coach could be useful for Australian rugby as a whole.. in the off season/s14 season he could tour around the various Australian S15 clubs giving the kickers some coaching practice.

If this is correct, it is, along with the chance to now quickly replace Richard Graham, one of the very best pieces of news in the cause of improving the Wallabies' coaching infrastructure and its long-term contribution to elite Australian rugby. Perhaps, after all, the ARU is waking up. The lack of quality, depth and proven competence in the Wallaby support coaches under RD is our biggest single problem in Wallaby land.

The absence of such a full-time coach has been laughable given every form of kicking's usual criticality to rugby outcomes. Additionally, it's clear that good teams will benefit from not only the development of their specialist kickers, but ensuring that the majority of the team can kick as accurately as possible either forwards, at a angle, or for the line if ever best placed or having to do so under pressure. Then we add developing kicker contingencies for injury, etc. The positives of a competent specialist kicking coach are simply everywhere.

Finally, as someone who has advocated the benching or 'take a break' for Giteau (with Copper-Barnes or Cooper-JO'C as potentially better combos), it's often mentioned that this could not happen given the Wallabies' dependence upon him for place kicking. Well, if he have say KB (Kurtley Beale) and QC (Quade Cooper) as further improved place kickers, this factor, and its increased flexibility of options, is a further positive in the retention of dedicated kicking coach (and Gits won't now have to pay for his own to come in on an emergency basis as happened after England 2).

Van Straaten is a great choice.

I wonder if anybody ever thought of asking Michael Lynagh?

KB (Kurtley Beale) and JOC (James O'Connor) you would reckon

I too thought our kicking out of hand was good on the weekend and frankly so was the goal kicking. We looked rock solid there.

Not sure what you and others saying similar are saying here TBH: that things are now so good that no kicking coach is needed?....or...?

If you can spare a sec to read the link I pasted in above, you'll see it's possible that Van Stratten may have already been adding valuably in this role.

When was the last time Beale kicked for the Tahs? Hangers and Barnes have got a hold on kicking for the Tahs it would seem.

I reckon KB (Kurtley Beale) might get the call if there's a 55m one at altitude that needs kicking.

OK, let me clarify. I thought our kicking was very solid on the weekend and it might well be the result of the work with van Straaten already. If that's the case, then it's already a great investment. In any case, I'm perfectly happy with him being involved in our setup, as the bloke has plenty to offer us.

I reckon that might have been a mental thing. That year he kicked for the Tahs, and pretty poorly, all the commentators were saying he was knocking them over from everywhere in practice and warm-up. Maybe he has some new found maturity he can do it in game as well?

Braam van Straten ranks among my least favourite players of all time - totally uncreative. He definitely knows how to kick a ball though, so might be good for your boys.

Don't need a kicking coach when you have the greatest player of all time in Kurtley Beale.

And here we are in Oz with the world's best oval-ball kickers to hand in every part of Australia and we have to turn to a Saffer to improve our kicking! The only thing BvS can do better than AFL players is place kick. The Bokke twigged how good AFL players can kick an oval ball and snaffled Michael Byrne (ex-Swan) while a few of the NZ Super sides use Ben Perkins (ex-Port Adelaide) to fine tune their blokes kicking. Ben even helps out with place kickers. AFL coaches would be bloody handy helping us grab overhead balls at kickoffs, too.

Strange decision. Does Dingo REALLY understand Australian culture? Lucky for him BvS's involvement seemed to reap some success

agree Lindo.

So Deans head coach. Pato Noriega scrum coach. BVS kicking coach. Spindle's about to leave, what price another foreigner takes his job. Leaving little Aussie Jim as the only Aussie left.

It's an international industry these days fellas and you get the expertise where you can find it. Let's not forget that Eddie Jones was a big part of the Boks RWC 2007 win. As much as I would prefer an all Australian setup (especially as the head coach), if the best available talent is from overseas then so be it.

don't believe it. A decade ago Australian Rugby was acclaimed for being the 'smartest' team. Now those players are no longer playing, why can't we tap into them? In fairness I guess we have through Williams and Pato to a lessor degree. But the likes of Foley, Darwin, Larkham, Burke, Grey etc should all be considered before another foreigner I reckon.

Bloody foreigners. THEY TOOK OUR JOBS.

You find the best person available who fits the culture.

BvS has had a test and appears to have fitted in and added value, where he comes from should be irrelevant to the decision.
