Why is Marto employed as a commentator?

It is what it is

John Solomon (38)
Brendan Cannon = Captain Obvious
"The Wallaby scrum is in real trouble here"
"If we don't score soon we'll lose this match"
"Alexander is struggling to hold the scrum up"
"The All Blacks are finishing the stronger"

I think they need to change it up. I am over listening to the guys they have at the moment. I'd like to see Nick McCardle get a go as the head commentator as Clarkie is a bit past it and doesn't seem to have the understanding of the game that is required at this level.
Mark McBain does a good job with his game previews and reviews on 4TAB in Brisbane. He would probably be a bit dry for the FoxSports guys but he is quite thoughtful about the game.
I think they could go down the path of other sports in Aust and bring in some female talent. Alana Smith did a good job on The Ruck show on Triple M and I think that she could bring some value to the team. Also the daughter of a former Wallabies Coach so has a strong connection to the game.

The ITM cup games have some very insightful female commentators.

I wish we would get rugby commentators that are as good to listen to as the NFL commentators.

The amount of insight you get during a game is amazing. Both the Sunday and Monday night football teams are so well prepared. In breaks of play they rerun the play and point out loads of stuff. They will tell you about player's history, their training regime's, what they have had to work on in the off season etc etc.

These guys spend the whole week around the treams they are going to commentate. Come game time they are loaded with stats and info.

True professionals, even though it is at time packed with real American sensationalism. Doesn't matter though because underlying to that they are at the top of their game.

John Gruden is in my opinion the most insightful and interesting commentator in any sport on the planet (and can be hilarious at times). He will pick out a couple of players each game and by the end of it you understand why they are actually as good as they are. It helps that he has coached at the absolute highest level and is considered a master.

I know that NFL is way more technical, but rugby would do well to listen to these guys and as a start learn how little time they talk shit and that you only need to crack silly jokes if you really have fuck all to say for yourself. Which should in fact be never if you are a professional and well prepared.

Just saw this thread and wanted to say that they probably have been contemplating sacking him, but nobody has the guts to do it. From the times I've met him, he has been an arrogant, self absorbed dead brain. Pretty sure everyone would be happy without him there.

Love to hear "old man mcbain", one of my all time favorite reds.

People I know who went to Uni with him would concur with that assessment.

He hasn't really changed in the intervening years then.

I have a bit of a soft spot for him as he coached me at school and later at club level. Can be a grumpy bugger but lets you know what his opinion is.

Main female they use HJ is Melody Robinson, who actually has 4 world cup winning medals. I like her she got a rea;l good knowledge of game, she also on rugby panel show that I can't remember name of, good on that too.

Marto's not the worst by a long way. Brendan Cannon never has anything of any value to say, speaks in a mono-tone, and for the entire game/rugby club looks like he's drowning in the spotlight.

I enjoy Kafe's analysis, mostly because he does know a fair bit and you can learn from it.

Clarkie's much like Ray Warren, just a classic to listen to and they'll let him retire on his own merit.

Horan's in the same boat as Cannon IMO

I prefer Kafe's analysis once he has had 5 days to figure out what is actually going on. He is hopeless during the game. Agree Canno is the worst of the bunch.

Clarkie is a genuine "caller" of the game
The other blokes are "commentators" and make comments - friggin' stupid ones very very often
Reportedly the players hate the lot of them, mainly for always talking Australian Rugby down
Kafe is the only bloke that seems to be quite incisive about tactics.
Have to admit that I loved Genia's quip (even though I thought he played shithouse and obviously was very defensive)

Which players hate them and where did you hear this from...

Given the number of players in Australia, seems a broad generalization

Weird article from Greg Martin,

"The problem is that the senior Wallabies feel the younger blokes get away with hell and there’s an aspect to this that the culture is getting eroded away and the youngsters keep doing things and there’s no accountability for their actions.
"It shouldn’t be up to a 24-year-old to make those statements. It should be a Wallabies captain.
"Part of it is brought on because we’ve lost so many captains, from Rocky (Elsom) to Jimmy (James Horwill) to Will (Genia) to David Pocock.
"In normal situations, you’d have a rock-solid team.
"But the loss of those four out of the team is what’s rocking Australian rugby. It means no one from the team is making the representation between the players and the coaches.
"There’s jealousy in the team, the fact that he gets away with things that others don’t. But he’s an extraordinary talent and you need to nurture those."

It's worth a read, above is the main problem I have with it, he basically defends Quade and says its a lack of leadership and other players are jealous of him. That of genia and Horwill were fit it would be fine cos they understand Quade. Yet above he says that Quade has alienated himself due to his off field actions but should have no responsibility for them as he is talented.

Do we need any more evidence on behalf of the Prosecution on why Marto should not be employed as a commentator?

I am so fucking tired of everyting being dumbed down because it will give you :-
More money
More voters
More money
More followers
More money
More goddam mediocrity

FFS if you provided a DECENT product you would achieve far more than you could want for.

But no, the people that run this world are the spindoctors, the marketing people, the media barons, the bankers, the wankers!

Sorry I have a very cynical view of our culture at the moment :(

end of rant

^^^^ Ever seen the movie "Idiocracy". Supposedly a comedy, but there are some who would classify it in the Horror genre.

Marto's Qld monomania is so overt these days that he has become a caricature in the box. The quoted article is really something. I wonder if he really believes this stuff?

An old thread but still relevant: Marto is still employed by FoxSports as a commentator.

Do FoxSports read these posts?
Do they care?

As has been said, I would prefer the option to have ONLY referee and crowd noise.
