This is a team of 15 provinces, not a team of three countries. I don't understand why anybody thinks they should support an Australian team after their own by default because they are Australian. We may as well strip away the provences and line up as Australia 1,2,3,4,5. I much rather believe that those who back the Reds here on in do so on their own merit and not because they are Australian. Only when Aussie players unite under a Wallaby jersey do I feel a need for a national sentiment.

For my part, I do "blindly" support Australian teams against foreign teams. And I do it in every sport I follow. I guess it's because I don't have any particular allegiance to provincial teams, but tend to follow a different one each year, depending on who has the players I like (and very rarely the favourites, unless it is by chance). The interstate vitriol makes me laugh, when it isn't making me cry. So, I'm supporting Australia this weekend and the next!

One point I'd like to add is that a QLDer wanting to see NSW lose, does not mean they are incapable of judging whether Mumm or Beale is a good player. Speaking personally, I haven't got a problem with any Reds players individually, but I'm not a big supporter of their team.

If your allegiance selection criteria is purely which team is playing the best footy, then I can see that. Although by that criteria I can't see how you could have followed the Tahs for much of this season Scarfy!

I was particularly referring to the "I won't follow the Aussie teams, coz I won't" (spite) motivation. That does seem to cloud judgement.

Serious question antipodean: I'm curious about the logic you use to arrive at the statement above.
It's the same logic Gagger used, just reversed.

I reject your assertion that people who 'support the other provinces [...] are more likely to be open to recognising the merits of other provincial players'. You don't need to support a team to recognise good players - I've despised teams and wished I had some of their players.

Basically if a team is playing good rugby, with ball in hand or in defence, I will cheer them on. My applause is a thank you for the entertainment. I also reserve the right to support the Tahs through thick and thin.
^ This.

I'm a huge Tah fan, seriously. As I've said before, the Tahs winning SupeRugby would mean more to me than a RWC. However, I really lost it with the Tahs this season. It looked like the game plan was to get Mitchell or Beale to score a miracle try. Beyond that, and some good scrummaging, I thought they were bullshit artists. I stopped watching them a few weeks ago.

Jesus, this thread has just become tragic. I may need to drink myself to sleep. Again.

It's just like when my wife makes me watch "An Affair to Remember" and Cary Grant confronts Deborah Kerr and finally realises she can't get up and....

Oops. Don't mind me.

This is one of the silliest threads I have ever seen.

PB is it different over there? Would a South African fan not go for a SAffer team, no matter what??

VRF - the Reds are playing terrific up-tempo rugby. But the only side playing perfect XV-man rugby is the Crusaders. The only thing that can beat them is travel.

Oddly enough, and with high irony from what you have said on this thread, Scarfie it was probably your famous/infamous video re HRH and the ABs' highly debatable tactics at the breakdown that I sincerely believe may have played an indirect role in the Reds' famous victory v Cru this year. The refs have been far more vigilant over HRH's behavior at ruck time this year than ever before, at least as I can recall. Even many casual rugby fans I know saw that video and talked about it. I cannot believe that the SANZAR refs' group didn't as well, and think: this is so flagrant, and so longstanding, we have to act. HRH was actually yellowed in Perth this year! The 'final, no that's genuinely, truly, a final warning Richie, really is final.'

My sense of protocol (and rule 6) forbids me from saying what I really think of some of the comments in this thread. Support who you want, but if you are Australian, and you support a Kiwi or Saffa team against the Reds, don't come telling me how awesome player 'x' is for the Wallabies if he is a Reds player, or from another Oz team that isn't yours. Your opinion has no currency and you can go forth and multiply.

A silly thread? No, that gives the perception of playfullness and wit.

No, I'm not a Tahs fan, so yes, I shouldn't be posting here.....my heartfelt apologies.....

Sorry daz, so your saying it's unaustralian not to support the reds?
As I said, I will be but everyone is entitled to support whoever they want.

In my consideration is the fact that over the last 6/7 years the tahs have had. Great rivalry with the crusaders, this has translated into me watchin the crusaders a lot and coming to respect and admire there brand of football, if the tahs can't beat them, that actually translate to me hoping they make the final as inane somewhat of an emotional investment in them.

I don't have that same investment in the reds as they have only been playing good rugby for 18 months. I didn't see aloof them this year, I did last year, but my investment in them is hoping ewen goes well as I respect him as a coach and person and hope he does well.

I hoot reds play the crusaders in the final, who wins, i don't actually care that much. I hope for a good game, does that mean I can't support the wallabies?

There I was thinking how silly this thread is and I come across Lee's comment. Don't know if I would've used the absolute for an adjective, though.
