........The reason I turned it down is it's a bit of a party lifestyle. It's obviously a serious career and is full on but in terms of long-term security it didn't offer a lot, as opposed to Manly and the pathway they provided. 'Party Lifestyle ' ???? Disappointing. I also hear he is recovering from an ACL

He has signed a 2 year deal?
And he thinks he has long term security?
Don't get me wrong,I wish him no ill will, but I seriously hope that was just an off the cuff comment.
Both codes offer long term security to only the very, very best, neither offer it to schoolboy hopefuls....
I'm surprised that if he was offered a 7's contract(and not the opportunity to trial for one) that U20's League would be able to trump that offer.

He has a signed a 3 year deal. If he thinks he has long term security at Manly he is dreaming. Manly don't even look after their players, they have cut players who are still under contract and have dumped their club legend coach., Without knowing to much about him, he would have a much better future in rugby. Interesting Manly have also signed Auggies John Walker on a 2 year contract.... Don't know what is going on

There's always a few that go across to the Dark Side. Sometimes they come back, sometimes they don't.

Not really worth spilling tears over or losing too much sleep. Others will come along.

Life's not a 3 year sprint.
Don't know Walker but it sounds like he was highly regarded in rugby, as was Wright. A few extra $$$ at 18 isn't going to make the difference at 35.

It would seem though that the pathway to the top is a quick one for those chased heavily by the league clubs. Which at 18 would no doubt be appealing. Moeroa debuted at 18, Crichton played the NRL 9s and NRL trials and it seems if Wright wasn't injured he would have followed a similar path. I live on the northern beaches and there has been a fair bit of hype about him. Apparently he is with the NRL squad from on the start. Barrett called him a freak who could do anything in an interview just a few days ago. So while life isn't the 3 year sprint those that are the chosen few are expressed through to the heights which would conceivably take many more years in rugby.

I agree, it just seems with the rugby it goes on forever with different reps etc for the young guys who want a future in rugby, which is probably why some are leaving, compared to the league where it seems a lot shorter pathway to get to the top level and the NRL / clubs are giving more young players a go. It Would be nice to see as well more young players getting there chance say for the Wallabies etc as this could encourage more to stay

How many young loig players are there getting their chance for say the Kangaroos?

Of those that do, not many last. Remember the numbers game. There are lots more positions for professional athletes in that code (Is there 18 NRL Squads + 2 SOO Squads (3 games) + Kangaroos (<5 games per year)) but there are lots more players trying out to land one of those positions.

We have 5 Super Rugby Squads, and Wallabies that play 10=14 games per year).

Both codes have a habit of chewing up and spitting out the latest next best thing straight out of school. I hope the kid makes it as an professional athlete but, pardon the cynicism, we've seen it all before - many times.

The likes of the Richie McCaw's, David Pocock's, Freddy Fittler's, Joey John's, Brad Thorn's etc do not grow on trees.

Gavin Luka and Dylan Riley were awarded the John Eales Rugby Excellence Scholarship at Bond last night. They would obviously be playing for Bond Rugby Club and Reds u20 Rep if chosen.

Moeroa is the exception, and was recognised as such very early: none of the rest of the levels at which those guys have played is the "top". 9's will suit the union youngsters because it is necessarily less structured and confined.
Wright is exceptional: my hunch is he is exceptional in a way that union can and does use and that he will be stifled by the predictability of league and homogenous body types that make mismatches extremely difficult to achieve.

I have only watched a few games of Wright play and I think he will find it harder in league and going the next step. He has to recover from an ACL and then get used to league. Manly are already looking at more 5/8s, the club what I have been told are are bunch of Arse*****, they never look after their players etc and I would be very surprised if he plays any first grade

What is his defence like? If he has a weakness in his tackling he will go nowhere in League

I'm not so sure.
There are plenty of weak/missed tackles in league ,since they started to coach them to catch the ball runner, rather than knocking him over.

Bozos opinion of the kid will determine his future there, not his tackling technique.
He mightn't feature in the org chart, but he is the boss down there.
