Blame everybody you like, mate. But have you actually talked to some of your friends and neighbours and asked them whether they like rugby? And if you say they all do, fair enough.

On the other hand, if you live in the real world, and talk to real people, you will discover that the game is indeed the problem.

Soccer is simple to watch, and understand. Ditto Netball. Ditto all the games that are popular in Australia. That is a fact. F.A.C.T.

Do you accept this?

I will have to disagree there.

Soccer is not simple, and I find it like torture to watch.

Yep, soccer is about as tedious as it gets for me these days and I used to really enjoy the game once upon a time (and league too if I'm honest).

Dan makes a good point: Aussie rules and league are popular in OZ, but practically nobody else plays the game. We're very parochial like that. Cricket is the exception and it's the one game that unites us I think, across all socio-economic strata. We were one of two original test playing nations, so there is a huge amount of tradition built up around that alone.

Bill deserves what his contract says he deserves.

A typical banker reply. Is that perchance the industry you are in? Or perhaps politics?

Simply because even though bankers around the world managed to send their institutions to the wall and in some cases had to be nationalised to avoid complete collapse those thieving F^%$%^s managed to somehow qualify for their "bonuses" and even the golden handshakes as they were terminated. IMHO opinion they deserved gaol time, some for life. The Big 4 managers in Australia are no better, despite receiving deposit insurance from the government (termed differently but it is essentially what it is, they now whinge they cannot afford to pay for such underwriting despite accepting the nice padding out of their Share price for the last 8 years and hence their own nice fat bonuses.

Should we wonder that Clyne if so useless when it comes to management where he doesn't have the Government to bail out and guarantee his institution.

Whatever you might think about Bankers ethics, the guys running Banks are no dopes.
maybe having the best & brightest, who can't really afford much of their time, is not the best alternative, when selecting the ARU board.

Clynes interview at the start of this mess, had a distinct feel that he was briefed on the issue as he got out of the cab/limo.

I never said they were not intelligent. I said they have no ethics, do not accept accountability and have no idea what institutional transparency is.

They are certainly intelligent, having managed the world over to create a system where they can pillage vast sums of money regardless of their actual performance.

Sound like the ARU? AT the level of remuneration that these people are getting there can be no excuses and they must be accountable for what they have or have not done. Preparation or lack of it is his problem.

Is Clyne even getting paid?

Bill deserves what his contract says he deserves.

I really thought that when a person resigns he just leaves - I didn't know you could pull the plug and get a payout as well - I must check the fine print on my employment contract

Board members are paid $30k?
But I think they have foregone fees ,the last few years.

Nah.

They are back on the payroll. Not that it's particularly relevant, but in 2015 it was agreed that Directors’ fees would be reinstated to their original level with effect from 1 January 2016.

It's a part-time gig for these people to continue their networking circle.

Having a bunch of bankers on board means they'll do what bankers do: tick-a-box for headline figures and glossy reports, while cutting services and sweeping all f**k ups under the carpet.

Errr. Yes, you do that. Who knows what you might find?

^^^^ Having people on boards do things for free and (very) part time, whilst sounding oh so wonderfully giving and generous is not, I assure all parties here, always the best answer in a situation requiring, necessitating, intense focus and commitment and an honest application that is way beyond the 'pathway to the best networks and Sydney-centric circles of high prestige' so often associated with ARU directors.

I disagree Wamberal, the games that are the most popular in Aus (in winter anyway) are AFL and League, and why? Because Australia is top at them because basically noone else plays the games!! Soccer I know breaks the rules, and is truly popular, but I not that high with 2nd/3rd generation Australians, but will always have a good start because it a non contact sport which will always attract a lot of kids (parents usually lean towards them).

But that's not really why AFL and League are popular in Australia. They are popular for the same reason that the A-league is growing in popularity. All three have something that rugby in Oz doesn't have.
