Thanks Dan, glad you agree it’s pretty dumb to expect anything more from NZRU then prioritising their own self-interest.

I do, and also think it dumb if you think RA should not prioritise their own self interest, what do you think these joker's jobs are? Honest question mate, what do you think RA's main priority should be? And what do you NZR main priority should be?

Do you really think RA should put a PI team ahead of any Aus team?

Sure, it "increases pathways"... and this could be a giant clanger of a post... and overly naive... but I just think it's weird to have franchises selected purely on racial lines.

Just end up like the boks and looking for colour in everything.

It wouldn't actually be based along racial lines though, just nationality. So anyone eligible for Fiji, Samoa or Tonga would be eligible for the Moana Pasifika team. That's really no different from Australian and NZ teams limiting the number of foreign players, Australia and NZ are just more ethnically diverse countries.

RA have never opened expressions of interest, released a review or made any formal announcement for the inclusion of a pacific island team, unlike NRZU. So really this is a hypothetical question.

Don’t see why you’re getting so upset about the comment if you actually agree with what I’m saying.

Is that to say they won't be selecting any current or former players of islander heritage who have represented NZ/AUS?

Also wonder if Moana Pasifika will be criticized for poaching players that are born and bred Aussie/Kiwis that are of islander heritage, to the same extent that we do

(I wouldn’t get excited if i were Moana Pasifika, NZRU will ultimately do what is good for NZ.)

I was asking don't you think NZR's should do what is ultimately what is good for NZ? And do you not think that Moana Pasifika would know that NZR is there to run NZ rugby.

I didn't realise they had to be eligible to represent Fiji, Tonga or Samoa as Scott Sio , Ardie Savea etc had made noises about getting involved when they finished with commitments. But you probably bang on and they may just leave a few spots open for non elligible players as do NZ and Aus.

No more than the Islands are now , Samoa had I believe more players born in NZ than Samoa in last few world cups. Noone seemed to mind.

Dan I said what I said... Moana Pasifika shouldn’t get too excited. NZRU will do what is good for themselves...

This whole Moana Pasifika concept had value to the kiwis when the trans Tasman relationship was shaky, now that relations have improved I don’t see the kiwis going to any real effort to make it succeed. They haven’t completely culled the concept out of fear of backlash and ongoing uncertainty, I believe they’re simply hedging their bets by keeping the idea on ice.

Take my word for it mate, it got wheels big time over here, over here it feels like it up to MP (Moana Pasifika) to stuff it up now. I will be very very surprised if it doesn't happen. Funny how just being back here I get the vibe how much it got going for it.

I think there'd probably be a few ex-Wallabies/AB's, but I would be surprised if they don't commit to a significant majority of the squad being eligible for PI test teams. And possibly with more of a focus on Samoan and Tongan eligibility, as it's been reported there could be a separate Fijian team.

If that happens the team will be picked along racial lines then, will it not?

Not if the policy is based on nationality rather than ethnicity, same as the Australian and NZ teams. The end result may be basically the same, because Samoa and Tonga are ethnically homogenous countries and in Fiji my understanding is that not many Indian-Fijians play rugby, but if there are, for example, caucasian guys eligible for a PI country that are good enough to be signed, then they wouldn't be excluded. And I would assume they'd probably have a few spots available for non-eligible players. Most of them may end up being of PI origin but they wouldn't necessarily have to be.

It's really no different to the national teams as they are! Countries that aren't very ethnically diverse may end up with every player being the same ethnicity, but they aren't selecting explicitly along those lines. There's no problem as long as no one who's eligible and good enough to be picked is being excluded due to race or ethnicity.

Australian and NZ teams select players based on national eligibility because the governing body pays their wages, have we seen what the ownership model would look like, and who would be funding it?

If its to come from New Zealand's share of broadcast money, then I doubt we will see the same restrictions. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised to see plenty of kiwis filling out the squad, and the AB’s to also select Kiwi eligible players from the team as well.

This kind of makes sense. Especially NZ funding it.

I really doubt whether NZR will fund the team. From what I read they doing the funding etc themselves as they want to be an independent team as they don't want anyone telling them who to pick etc, and as it should be too. I assume they will get a cut of TV money, and then sponsorship will take care of rest. That was supposedly how teams were meant o work I believe

When you say they are doing the funding themselves, who is ‘they’ and how are they funding it?
And if NZ aren’t funding it out of their broadcast rights, then where is this broadcast money coming from?

If it is set up like that I reckon World Rugby would also put some coin in, they have stated they would provide funding for a Fijian team based in Suva.

If MP (Moana Pasifika) can provide the same pathways for Samoan & Tongan eligible players it's a worthwhile investment.
