Because they are they ones calling for EOI's - that's what people running things do.

If by that you mean that RA haven't been able to put any coherent plan forward - we're in furious agreement.
In fairness all reports is RA has plans for alternative scenario outside TT Comp but obviously not revealing yet as stated preference is TT comp

No that's what people setting something up, so they got something underway!
Quote from Mark Robinson, and note what it says about owning and running it, or do you think NZ and Aus should just say to someone 'we want a comp, come and set it up and run it huh?' “The look and shape and feel of how this competition may be owned or run is still to be determined and the way it connects to Sanzaar is yet to be determined.

I think you need to calm down.

Possibly if you want to set up a competition with someone, you meet behind closed doors and come out with an agreed position and move forward together. Really, you're normally quite analytical, but with respect your way off beam with this.

Not that I favour a TT competition anyway.

NO SANZAAR got a share but everu country had their own TV deal didn't they? Isn't tha's why Force were cut because they cost RA too much supposedly, and why major shareholder of Rebels sell back them to RA for $1 or something?
And you say it doesn't paint NZR in a good light? Because they have actually suggested a comp while RA just sit here and wait to react? I keep asking do you think RA look particularly good, or just look like a union waiting for someone else to do everything and they just seem to be sitting there and demanding more? I not sure who looks bad and who look like bludgers at moment!!

For the SANZAAR properties, Rugby Championships and SuperRugby the Revenue is pooled and shared between the member unions in a revenue share model. The home nations retain revenue from their respective deals as it relates to the non-SANZAAR elements. The % share normally reflects what the nations bring. This proposition as it has been communicated is very different. So much so that I wonder if it can even be called SuperRugby.

Both SA and RA made moves to cut teams in order to change their cost base as they strategically saw it as the right move at the time. The rationale we might not even know 100%.

As Brumby Runner flagged, if this really was a move to proceed with RA as a genuine partner, then there are other ways that this could have been approached. The insinuation that RA have been bludging is a little poor as we truthfully don't know what they have been up to. Potentially they didn't want to leak their intentions to be played out in the media or they have other options that they are exploring that they can't yet communicate yet, or maybe they had decided to not distract from SuperRugby AU at this time with what they plan because they wanted the reporting to be about the actual Rugby for once. Who know's what their rationale is.

NZR have made their intent at this point clear and the timing, leaks and comments all speak to how they have decided to position themselves. Like I said, I respect it from a business prespective, but in terms of leveraging these particular circumstances, it paints a picture.

Anyway, until RA decide to communicate their position and outline the options as they see them we're all just circling. Time will tell.

Ok mate, happy to be wrong, I thought it got changed , maybe I was taking to much notice of each union having deals with thier own tv s! Maybe I was reading to much in that SA and NZ got more because they had a bigger cut because of Currie Cup and Mitre 10 cup being part of it!

Japan involvement in a Champions League style format was reported earlier this year;

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-...n-to-keep-japan-involved-20200514-p54sz1.html

. so whilst, yes Japan (JRU) has been looking at doing their own thing I don't think no involvement with AU/NZ n' co has been off the table....

Just to firm that up and bring this up to date:

Rugby: JRFU exec pushes for new Top League-Super Rugby tournament
Jul 18, 2020 - 22:00
TOKYO – If Japan's national rugby team is to grow stronger in the long term, the country's top clubs must compete against the best from the Southern Hemisphere, according to Japan Rugby Football Union Director Yuichiro Fujii.
… <snip> … Considering the Sunwolves' experience, having the Top League champions and another squad of top players from around the league take part in a new competition could benefit Japan's national team selection.
Fujii said a proposed change to the international calendar, moving the July tests to the autumn, would create a space for a new competition.
"If it's held in June and July, it wouldn't overlap with either the Top League or national team activities," Fujii said.
Again, a Heineken-style Champions Cup / Challenge Cup format is a model that will work for us.

It is important for Australian rugby to not become overstretched. While cutting teams is not the way to go, adding them also needs caution. A total of 5 or 6 is probably the wise limit for now.

Happy to see this and not a push for an internal Cup competition from Japan.

Don't know, don't care, not in my part of the world. Can talk about Reds and Brumbies if you want.

Kiwi rugby right now can get stuffed. Completely. Not slightly interested (until the Bled).

Yep but fortunately there a real rugby men on the forum!!;) And unfortunately I can't see a Blediloe this year with how things are going here with Covid, they may get teams in quarantine, but I suspect we may just have to live with what we got.

Not unless you have buy in. Otherwise it’s just something that someone else plays.

Dru, I'm completely with you regards a domestic competition for our country. Rivalry, tribalism and as you point out buy in.

it is the only way the game will really move forward in this country, but I love watching the Kiwi games they are fantastic. I just don't think we should be tied at the hips playing them every week to justify our existence.

Look at what the Japanese have just said, there interested in a champions league for June/July.

Fuck its not rocket science, domestic leagues followed by champions league.

No not to rugby people, I watch 6N, I watch Currie cup as Wamb says rugby is rugby. Mind you I perhaps understand why some make comments they do, they don't actually watch ENOUGH rugby to be able to see whats good or bad!

Well that's half your problem we need to appeal to more than just rugby people, because if you think for more than a second that superior eyeballs are going to grow the game well good luck.

Successful sports models around the world are built around this - as this is needed to tap into the bigger market for sports fans (read growth). As we need to move beyond a product that the small hard core rusted on rugby nuts who watch any rugby will watch - the latter which is not who we need to change or market the game to for the code to survive and grow long term.

The only way we will ever compete for survival against other football codes in oz is to have enough relevant domestic content fans can engage in. And the latter is not lots of local kiwi derbies which the average joe public sports fan in oz could not give a shit about and never will.

And to add I think we have to stop with the only the best in the world competition will do, you then spend 90% of the time denigrating your own product.

We've just had 20 years of the best domestic quality competition in the world, yet look where it got us, i'm not saying don't strive to be the best, but when your only happy watching the All Blacks, where do you go from there.

I agree, but by geez if you think losing the people you got supporting the comps now to get in more non rugby people I suspect you will have more of a problem, they don't watch when teams lose, you lose in long run! Anyway lets agree to disagree, you want a lesser comp and hopefully more people will switch too from other sports and I think like any sports I enjoy watching the best standard I can.
