If we end up with 5 teams in Super Rugby for next year I give it less than 12 months. Chinese might come in and buy all of rugby teams for a $1 though.

Don't think that the number of teams will make any difference.
Super rugby is now completely disconnected from so many rugby followers, I doubt there is any way back.
If we're not careful, the Wallabies will also be enveloped by the tsunami.

... were historically pretty similar to other times we have hosted Fiji, Scotland or Italy.
Rugby is clearly struggling for interest currently and crowds are going to be pretty average for the Rugby Championship but I don't think any of those June tests go close to selling out even when things are rosy.

That is certainly a big drop from then.
Certainly the sentiment towards rugby was great so close to the RWC we hosted.
I was thinking more around the last Lions Tour (not in Australia) in 2009 when we hosted Italy twice.

While some will and can argue that these numbers are the post RWC bounce and up-tick Rugby received in Australia going back to the 90s crowds were also better than what we have been seeing since 2012 or so.

The long period without winning a Bledisloe Cup etc. has a big impact on the interest in the Wallabies amongst more casual fans.
I think we all remember how much more important it was seen to the broader public when we were winning the thing compared to now.
Unfortunately it is very hard to see us winning the Bledisloe Cup back and even then, would it be enough to re-energise the disengaged rugby fanbase and broader public?

A quick check reveals that the 2 tests v Italy had crowds of 22,468 in Canberra (89.8% full) and 20,280 @ Docklands in Melbourne (43.2% full, assuming rectangular mode used)

It's just QH forecasting the crowds in 2020. The sunset in the background is a bit of a giveaway, given Tahs games start at 740pm I'm guessing this is around about kickoff for a Gen Blue curtain raiser or something.

Got to admit the support for the Force, recent events, and the way going about it with backing of Premier, Twiggy etc if the ARU actually cut the Force I would be leading the way with a petition for the removal of the ARU!!
As I get the need to cut a side but to cut the Force with the strength of their balance sheet with TF energised Own the Force fund, backing of one of Oz biggest and highest profile (and respected) billionaires, plus incredibly strong community backing, this would just have to be one of the dumbest moments of the ARU if they go ahead and cut the Force, and yes there are lots of them!
Sorry they need to find an alternative option as clear as mud cutting the Force at this point not the right decision.

Yep.
I have shown this phone vid before its Oct 2014, so two A-League seasons ago, and well before the current trouble times.
Whats most scary for me in this 3 minute vid is not the crowd, its not the fact of how young the crowd is, nor that con-tree to popular theory soccer fans of different sides can't side side by side in a match . What scares me is the guy taking the vid on his phone would have had a small window of close ups of people around him;- I saw what you would think are rugby folk there at 0.46 seconds, 1:10, 2:10, 3:05, 3:12.

I do and as I posted roughly a week ago, I am now a season ticket holder for the Mariners for the up coming season. Also the wife is a very keen fan and she tells me a lot from her experience as a school teacher.
I see soccer in two ways, both showing how to do many things as 3 years ago we had bigger crowds, bigger ratings. Today we don't.
The second way is as a warning of whats coming unless we react.
TOCC, NZ and SA don't have dominate sports like AFL & League. Moreover they don't have an aggressive fourth code trying to push them out of the way.
I will happily stop posting soccer stuff if it upsets you and find another way to make my point. Maybe I use the Swans and how many rugby folk have migrated over to AFL or the AFL spending big in the GPS schools.
Maybe I should point out in western Sydney AFL sent there people to rugby rep days and try to poach our best players. Or that league are planning a massive assault on Oceania.

The ARU reported a surplus of $3.7 mio for the end of 2016. Surely if the Force have now got Forrest stepping up at the final hour ( where has he been all these years ), if the Rebels present a fully funded deal for the next 3 years courtesy of the VIC gov funding ( sponsorship , whatever ) then surely the ARU ( or a new governance structure ) can get behind the game and make it function financially. The idea on this thread we are better off taking it all back to club rugby, or having some fanciful comp with pacific island teams in it ( whos going to fund that if there isnt any money, because they have far less than we do ?? ) does not serve the need to have a competitive professional structure between club and test level. Sending players into tests from a pumped up club comp against truly professional and well funded test teams would surely sign the end of rugby here. Whether we like it or not the game is professional and seemingly doing quite well every where else in the world, so it is only natural that our best talent would be on the next plane out of here, and without those players staying in teh system or the new breed coming through, what are FOX paying for.. ? Their financial input would be zilch.
I thought that the Lions v Crusaders sell out crowd of 63,000 showed that if you have competitive sides playing high quality rugby you will get the interest. Its not impossible for the tahs and reds to get back to 20k a game, nor is it impossible for the other 3 to lift their performances from average crowds of 8-10k each week to mid teens.
We need a solution to make the super rugby format work in some way. we need 5 teams , and they all need to present a viable funding model for the next 3 years or they're gone, that includes the Waratahs, Reds and Brumbies as well. No one should be safe from scrutiny. The game in Australia is not dead, and the professional level needs to win back the hearts and minds of the codes loyal supporters. I for one want to support the tahs and go watch their games, but they need to earn my trust again with strong and committed performances. They dont have to win every week, they just need to show me that they can win.. then I'll be there every week win or lose.

Yes, there are some things we can learn from what happened there, but like a lot of things in this thread they've been repeated ad nauseum.
