I really rate alcock i thought when the force played the tahs he did very well at shutting down pocock and shutting down gill when against the reds

The Force would be better off looking at a few of the top Lions players, like La Grange. Jantjies would also be good, but the Force are well enough covered at 10 for now I guess.

Not sure why we would pick up Alcock with the other back rowers we have? I rate him highly, BTW, but it seems an odd choice. Maybe Hodgo will stay at 6 and Alcock will play 7?

Also probably want someone who is a bit better than hodgo on the ball. I also imagine that hodgo and browns time is winding up so they are getting prepared for all occasions

Hodgo is regularly just as, if not more effective than Pocock at the breakdown in super rugby games. 2013 will be a big season for him.

You don't actually believe this do you?

Well yeah he makes a lot of key turnovers and opposition teams generally focus more on stopping Pocock. It's something I watch for when watching Force games. If I were the coaches I wouldn't be too concerned about our pressure at the breakdown for as long as he is there.

Maybe I'm wrong and we are now in a crisis though, what do you observe?

Hodgo is often better than Pocock. No great loss. Long live the new captain

Ok so you say Pococks effectiveness is mitigated by opposition teams focussing on shutting him down.. What is going to happen in 2013 now that there is no Pocock, do you not think that this focus will shift onto Hodgson to some degree?

I never said the Force were in crisis, Hodgson is still a good super rugby player, but he is not up to the same standard as pocock when it comes to the breakdown.

Scarlets sign up aussie ace

THE Scarlets have completed the signing of Wales-qualified Australian lock Jake Ball from Super 15 side Western Force.
The 21-year-old, who is eligible to play for Wales because of his North Walian father, has signed a three-year contract at Parc y Scarlets

At 6ft 7in and 19st, Ball (pictured right) is a fearsome physical specimen and becomes the Scarlets' fourth second row signing of the summer following the arrivals of Tomas Vallejos, George Earle and Richard Kelly.
"This is a brilliant opportunity for me, to get to play and work within the Scarlets set-up which has such a big reputation for progressing and supporting up-and-coming players," said Ball.
"It's a rugby club with a rich history and heritage that everyone recognises the world over.
"Having been round Parc y Scarlets, I'm very impressed with the facilities — having everything in one rugby set-up on site both for training and matchday is a real plus. There are some experienced players and coaches in the Scarlets set-up who will no doubt push me further in my career and that's what you really want at my age.
"I'm looking forward to getting into training and hopefully getting some great opportunities in the league and to play in Europe.
"It's an exciting time for me and I'm eager to get going."

I have been thionking about it over the weekend and though i rate alcock. I feel it woudl be a waste for the force to sign him as they already have adequate flankers in Hodgson, Brown, McCalman, Cottrell, McCaffrey. Considering those five are all on full contracts now I can't see alcock coming in unless its in the capacity of an EPS player (i imagine he would be more likely to seal a fulltime deal with the rebels or overseas) or the force are looking to release one of the aforementioned players. I would also so suggest the money used to persuade alcock to join would be better spent bringing in McMeniman.

Going forward though i think we will se brown being used less this year and players liek cottrell and McCaffery moving ahead of him in the pecking order my choice of backrow would be 6. Cottrell 7. Hodgson 8.McCalman with Mccaffrey on the bench

I was also about to post that i think the best way forward at lock is Wykes and McMeniman ( if we can get him). Although i am upset to lose him as i think he looked better than Battye i am still not to worried there are better locks than him running around the traps

he hasnt played for the force yet. he is a local boy from Paly who they have been developing for a few years now. he would have got a shot at the end of the year but had an injury hence Atkins from Bris getting a run. Im sure that if the force offered him a contract he would have stayed. Another Local Perth Boy to add to the Long list of lost talent.

I am still not worried. But i do think it is time for the force to cut their losses and pillage the premier grade competitions and bring in an experienced international marquee and McMeniman

I have heard that although there is a handful of very capable players in the WA premier grade i hear the standard of even the best teams would struggle to stand up to the eastern states reserve grades (I heard this from some force players who originated out of state)hence why the force staff are more likely to pull players from the eastern states . Can someone give me there analysis of this? Is this really still the case?

While yes the Standard over all is not at the same level as say the Shute Shield. It is still good and getting better.

A Current first grader who has played in the shield said that the standard he has experience in Perth’s First grade was prob at the standard of the Second in the Shield. He did say however that there are plenty of individuals in the Perth Comp who could cut the mustard in First Grade in Sydney. Which is evident in players who have been over there and done well and continue to do so.

I don’t think you can turn you back on some very good local boys who if given the chance can make the step just because the rest of the comp isn’t up to it.
