Virus bites but no excuses
By RugbyWA Media
While four Emirates Western Force backs were struck down with a virus on the eve of the match against the Stormers, Coach Richard Graham said it wasn’t an excuse for the overall lacklustre display at Newlands.
Nick Cummins, Alfie Mafi, Gene Fairbanks and Pat Dellit had hardly the ideal preparation leading in to the game, up all night vomiting and unable to replenish their energy on game day. The virus hit Fairbanks the hardest with the hard nut inside centre unable to take his place in the side and was replaced by new signing Brian Sefanaia just before kick-off.
"We had four backs up all night vomiting - Cummins, Mafi, Dellit and Fairbanks were on drips all night,'' Graham said.
"But at the end of the day that wasn't the reason why we didn't win. We dropped re-starts and made uncharacteristic errors at crucial times and that's got nothing to do with a virus.
"We gave possession to them too many times in too many good places and they took advantage of that.
"You drop kick-offs and they score tries from possession they haven't really earned, it’s that type of mistake that really hurts,” said Graham.
After producing an impressive defensive display against the Lions a week earlier, where they denied the Johannesburg side any try scoring opportunities, the Emirates Western Force were breached six times by the Stormers who made the most of every opportunity handed to them.
“Our defence has been one of the best aspects of our game this season and we had a clear plan about how we wanted to approach this game. We found ourselves on the back foot immediately from our own errors,” said Graham.
"Our tackle miss was low but we were passive in the tackle.”
The Emirates Western Force now returns home to Perth for a huge clash against new Super Rugby side Melbourne Rebels on Saturday night.
I though cummins did bloody well now. One of our standouts with this going on.
Go the force!!!!
