1st question, why not?

2nd question, why would you not want to be?

Sorry for the late reply, forgot this post.

Because there is only one reason a footballer get's to the top, they are faster, stronger and/or more skillfull than the rest. In fact, as a society we have proven time and time again that we are willing to turn a blind eye to the misbehaviours as long as they are good at sports. When they turn out to grow into large egomaniacs with an over hyped sense of self importance and the idea that the rules of society don't apply to them we get all indignant, and feel need to tall poppy slash them back down to our level.

What Cameron Sheperd did was foolish and I think he is a dickhead, but it was unconnected to his job, and should not have any effect on his career. Just because society has decided that footballers are role models doesn't mean that they are.

Secondly, I would want to be a role model if I was in his position, but that doesn't mean that he has to be.

Sharpe will be starting this weekend. I think we could have beaten the tahs with full strength team. With pocock, sharpe, willi, David smith and Inman starting it should be a good game at suncorp. I wonder what our odds are at the tab.

Go the force!!!!

2011 Super Rugby – Week 1

Sunday, 20 February 2011 at Suncorp Stadium

Emirates Western Force Squad

1. Pek Cowan
2. Ben Whittaker
3. Tim Fairbrother
4. Ben McCalman
5. Nathan Sharpe
6. Matt Hodgson
7. David Pocock
8. Richard Brown
9. Brett Sheehan
10. James O’Connor
11. David Smith
12. Gene Fairbanks
13. Mitch Inman
14. Nick Cummins
15. Cameron Shepherd

Reserves

16. Nathan Charles
17. Kieran Longbottom
18. Sam Wykes
19. Tevita Metuisela
20. James Stannard
21. Alfie Mafi
22. Rory Sidey

No real surprises. Ripia out injured (likewise Dunning). JO'C into five eighth. Fairbanks inside centre.

McCalman selected at lock. Allows Metuisela onto bench (Manly club - former Brumbies Academy and league player).

So Ripia failed his fitness test? That backrow should have it all over the Reds, but unfortunately that's where it ends. It will be interesting to see how the Force line out holds up, and how their scrum goes. I rate Fairbrother, but do not rate Cowan at scrum time. Neither Reds nor Force have an attacking scrum. Worryingly, if Beiber struggles at 10 or goes down, what do the Force do? Fairbanks or Stannard to 10? Not attractive.

That bench for the Force shows, sadly, a real lack of depth. I really hope they don't get called on to use it much, but wouldn't mind seeing Stannard given some good time, and also McCalman move to 8 with Wykes coming on in the row, and Charles as well. Really looking forward to seeing Pocock back in action too.

Who is this Tevita Metuisela on the bench? How does he go?

Lower grader with the Roosters, Storm & Tigers between 2003 - 2008. I haven't seen him play for Manly (others will have knowledge of that) but the reports I've seen have been good. Not a huge guy - 103kgs 187cm (6'2" for us old guys). He's 27 so no spring chicken. I suspect he's pretty physical. I'm not sure he'll get on though.

An odd bench.

Given Brown's ability to cover 7, McCalman's ability to cover 6 & 8 and Hodgo's ability to cover 6, 7 & 8 you'd surely put a lock that plays tight (Hockings or anyone in the wider squad like him) instead of a loosey on the bench (Metuisela) given Wykes can play 6 & 8 in a pinch.

Either way with Wykes on the bench you'd think loosey cover in Metuisela would be pointless and you may as well take an extra fatty or back.

If sidey gets a ban and it looks like Inman will be out force while who will fill in at 13. Alfi?

He looked good when he came on. Should be good in the centers.

Go the force!!!!

They could give Cummins a go at 13 and have Mafi and Smith on the wings.

Cummins looks like he has been working on his defence. I was impressed by his tackling against the Sharks and I think he has played 13 in the Sydney comp.

Yeah Cummins would be my pick at 13. The Force have are lucky the loss of Pocock doesn't mean much. Just slot Wykes in lock and the backrow is still as strong as ever.

Not quite true, if anyone is to be injured you'd want it to be Brown, which would actually strengthen the backrow. But if Pocock is a 10/10 at 7 then I'd rate Hodgson as 9/10at the same position. If Wykes continues to play like he did on Saturday, then when Pocock comes back Brown can go to the bench.
