Stanford doesn't appear in their player profiles, which total 33 to date. At loose forward they have the 4 usual suspects + Jono Jenkins. I guess Wykes sometimes plays as a loosie. They've got Steven Pocock in the Academy. No sign of Ted Postal or Flipper Manu?

PS Stanford signed a 2 year contract in April 2009 - so unless that's been broken he'd still be around. A flanker as well as a lock.

PSS I suppose injuries will balance it out.....

I also thought that when I looked at the profiles (which had been updated on 1 October). Perhaps he too prayed to Mary McKillop?

They have to have at least one or two locals in the squad till the younger and quite talented generation filters through.

Stanford was released at the end of the season just gone. I thought he was over playing in the ITM Cup?
Tyrell did some serious damage to himself. I think the doc said that he is fine to play, as long as its not hooker. As he was a backrower that moved to the front row, I think he is on the roster covering that position.

Is Manu and Postal on a academy contract? I thought at the very least that Postal was on a full contract?

WESTERN Force is poised to sign powerful Hurricanes winger David Smith as an emerging foreign player for next year's Super rugby series.

Although he has played 30 games for the Hurricanes since making his Super rugby debut against Queensland Reds in 2007, Smith is uncapped with the All Blacks, which means he would be eligible to play for the Wallabies in three years.

Smith, 25, was born in Samoa and was spotted while on a schoolboys rugby tour of New Zealand and offered a scholarship to attend Auckland's Mount Albert Grammar School, making the Auckland sevens team while still a student.

After playing for Auckland in the National Provincial Championship in 2006, Smith was touted as "The next great thing in waiting".

He was drafted by the Hurricanes in 2007 and made the permanent move to Wellington two years later.

Meanwhile, the Force's John Eales Medal-winning David Pocock said the Wallabies would have to take a leaf out of the All Blacks' playbook if they wanted to end their 10-game losing streak to the Kiwis in Hong Kong next Saturday.

"There is a lot of pressure on us to keep improving and start winning more games," Pocock said.

"An important thing for us is to keep focusing on our game.

"They are a very talented team and able to adapt in games and find ways to win. That's the challenge for us to do the same.

"The last two years we have lost quite a few close games. New Zealand, England, Scotland, Ireland (draw). All games we were in right to the end, but we didn't do enough. A focus for us is how to close out those games.

"It's something we have to fix, and we are working hard on it.

"It comes down to you focusing on what you can do as a team and not worrying too much about them.

"If we can focus on ourselves for 80 minutes and play the best we can, I think we'll go well."

Cue a response from someone east of us about "poaching". Though maybe not, as he did start out a bit North and East of the Shaky Isles. :)
That said, I wish every report about some NZ player being signed wasn't prefaced with the "he'll be eligible for Oz in 3 yrs" - does anyone really believe a player like Smith will stay 3 yrs? Or indeed care? In any event, IF uncapped NZ players were being targetted, why not someone of use, not yet another outside back? We actually have some pretty decent outside backs coming on, who also happen to be home-grown.

Like who? I mean, a lot of the outside backs that are of Super quality are already tied up at other clubs.

Smith's got good potential and already has Super experience. Not the best signing ever, but it's a decent one.

Well, off the top of my head...
Turner, Mitchell, Beale, Horne, Cross, BKH, Davies, Hynes, Chambers, Morahan, Ioane, Inman, Cummins, L Mitchell, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), McCabe, Fainifo, Betham, Huxley, Shepherd...I'm sure I missed a few more.
My point is , that area is not a big hole, so I fell a bit "Meh" about signing another.
And I know some of those are injured, getting on etc... before you remind me! :)

Injury doesn't enter into it! All those you named are already signed up, some at the Force even. The only outside back I think they could've got who isn't signed on would be John Grant, but I think he's in the Tah's academy anyway.

There's only three outside backs in the Wallabies. I think we've got enough contestants. :)

I think David Smith is a great pick-up for the Force. Their depth in the backs is pretty limited with the unproven Dellit, injury-riddled Shepherd, out of sorts Cummins and IMO well past their best players in Fairbanks and Bartholomeus. Smith is a much better player than John Grant. For mine, the Aust teams depth will be sorely tested in 2011 with the 5th team and the extra games. We have many more players contracted this year that I don't have an issue with a few ring-ins - I actually think it is a necessity.

Smith is a odd pick-up. He is playing well in the ITM cup and I don't understand why he wouldn't make an NZ super squad.

Something is up methinks.

Someone on another site said he has been capped for sevens by NZ, so wouldnt be a development player, rather a marquee.

I am surprised that he has left NZ if he isnt ever going to make the Australian side, but might still make the All Blacks, and hence you are right, something is a little fuuny.

How much more would he get to be a super rugby player in WA compared to NZ? Im guessing he will have some sort of third party payments written into his contract.
