Who was the last defender again?

I think it was Foley that was left for dead, if he was quicker and kept up with Shipperley, he didn't need to catch him to be able to stop the try. Having another man there would've allowed the last defender to back himself at full pace to take Shipperley on instead he was left in two minds and unable to compete at full pace as many defenders are in that situation. Go straight for Shipperley and he will step you on the inside so you need to time your run perfectly.

I think it was Foley as well. I think Foley has great acceleration, but not a lot of top-end speed. Although, I have only had limited viewings of Foley. In saying that, I did think initially that Foley had him covered and maybe dived a bit early.

Yep Foley. Foley got there with enough time but then he slowed I think to shepherd him to the sideline. Shipperly timed it perfectly and smoked him on the outside at the same time. I don't know enough about backs defense to say Foley definitely stuffed up, my impression is that Shipperly just finished it off perfectly as you would expect a fast winger to do.

Shipperly is obviously quick if he is keeping up with Davies..
Whilst he still has a few things to iron out in positioning and decision making, i think his athleticism will see him cement a wing spot in the coming season.

Oh what might have been. It is always the way with these games. It will at least make for a great return match later in the season.

The TPN no try was not the issue - the Tahs somehow managed to get themselves into the lead, with the ball and a knock on advantage, with seconds to go. There were so many right options, take a tackle, fall over, bump into your own player, drop the ball, pass the ball, pass into touch...but they managed to kick ("advantage over") instead.

The game was there for each team to win. Reds led most of game. Finally Tahs did get the lead and failed to close it out. Return match should be a beauty. Wonder what the odds will be for the return encounter - IMO, has to be even money

I haven't scrolled thru all of this thread, so this may have been said previously....the ABC radio 'Grandstand' call of this match was the worst I've ever heard, ( and I turned 64 yesterday)! It reminded me of English race-callers of twenty years ago! The commentators didn't want to be there and kept saying how boring the game was! The only time they showed interest was when Mike Harris pased the ball to Dom Shipperley ( in the 79.85th minute), and even then commented "Shipperley is surrounded by blue jumpers"!!
Please ABC, could you fund a return trip to Reds away games so Quentin Hull can attend and supply commentary with some level of enthusiasm?!!

Mr Doug - I was at game - sure it wasn't a fast free flowing game played in the spirit of running rugby - it was an interstate clash between two teams with a history going back 130 years. The game from the stands was an enjoyable rugby experience (irrespective of which team won) and I would have left the stadium happy with either result. I was also at the same match last year when the Tahs flogged the Reds and I walked away feeling disappointed and despondent, m,ainly at the lack of committment etc from the Reds.

I look forward to the return - should be another intense interstate game. love it

As I said on another thread, actually the kick ahead was not a bad option, if it had come off (and it easily could have come off) it would have meant that the Reds got zero points for the game, as it was they had one bonus point.

The players took a good option, as far as I am concerned - no risks, no rewards. Watch some of the New Zealand teams in action, this is how they play, and we have to learn to play in similar style, or our game will continue to struggle at the very top levels.

If you have the points, ball, and advantage in the dying seconds of the game it's never a good idea to kick to the opposition. Ever.

2% chance of denying Qld a bonus point vs the chance Qld will pull off some bullshit (which they do every week) and you lose 6 competition points to Qld - your major competitor.

Major stupidity.

I know this is going to be a little controversial, but did anyone else lose just a touch of respect for TPN for appearing to fake being knocked out after Horwill ran into him while going for the ball?

Nah not really - given the amount of head knocks he's taken over the years and the fact that he wouldn't have seen Kevvie coming, that hit may very well have stunned him.

The replay showed that Horwill's chest hit TPN hard on the back of the head, when TPN wasn't expecting it. Are you surprised that he was stunned for a short period? He didn't roll around on the ground in assumed pain or stare at the ref and throw his arms up so at to milk a penalty like some players have done.

Oh but no mention of Higgers faking injury after Mumm barely touched him in the lineout?

QLD had a 2% chance of scoring to which based on the night you wouldn't have backed them to do from there own quarter for any money no matter what state your in. The kick was attacking, the following ruck was fine, what happened next was the problem.

But as has been mentioned I'll discipline from the Tahs was the reason QLD had a chance, they offered pretty much nothing in attack.

The real problem was Tom Carter being taken out during his chase, the kick should've gone out but it was well chased until Carter lost his feet.

Do you mean the Reds or Tahs offered nothing in attack? Because the Reds literally strolled through the middle of your backline on numerous occasions. If it wasn't for pushed passes, and a little bit of patience the score could have been very different. Although I assume that you realise this.

Was Carter "taken out" or did he "lose his feet?

He ran fair into the back of a Reds player - definitely not taken out. If anything, a Reds cover defender was taken out. Sounds like you're hedging your bets a bit - throw some bait out but then add the "lose his feet" bit, so you have an out when you're called on it. ;)
