Putting aside who did what at the end of the game, the disaster for the Tahs is one typical of Oz rugby. Frankly I wouldn't have been surprised if any of the Oz teams did the same thing.

Sometimes our players and teams as a whole show a lack of footie nous. One couldn't imagine a team like Munster losing a game like that as the players in it are brought up knowing how to close a game out. Just about any of the top teams in Europe would do the same.

For that matter: I don't think the SAffer and Kiwi teams would have risked the win for anything.

Michael Foley is to be commended for his comments after the game and I applaud him for it; it must have been a bitter pill to swallow.

I realise that I have not given the Reds their due, especially the actions of Tapuai and Shipperly, and how they manufactured a wonderful rugby moment, but I think that my observation will resonate with some Oz rugby fans.

Watching it on TV, the surface looked a bit torn up and treacherous. Did it look that bad at the ground? Perhaps they let all the people on the pitch to replace the divots.

The game was a little scratchy, both sides looking underdone, and as good as it is having the rugby back, it is still summer. I think there is plenty of improvement in both. At least there didn't seem to be any obvious injuries.

I haven't read any of the post game posts yet, but I feel a very strong urge to say:

It looks like we have a long painful season ahead. It is of no consolation to me that the Reds look pretty shithouse too.

I won't name names, but frankly several of the Waratahs starting XV should be let go, and replaced by younger players with a bit of heart, talent, and intelligence.

It was so Fucken brilliant being at the game last night getting hammered by the so called Tar's supporters surrounding me.... They cleared out pretty quickly at the end of the game and I held my tongue while they left walking past me... Could have said something but it was the Tar's supporter, they do Boo there own team.....and I Had nothing nice to say....

That was my impression too: could it be that its just a little cooler and less humid in NZ?
In the Bumbies Force game it seemed like each team was pacing itself until the final 10 for fear of running out of gas.

Given the depth in NZ it stands to reason that in the first year of the RWC cycle, when the oldies have retired/injured/on sabbatical their unsung understudies would come to the fore....SBW continue to unimpress

Regardless of who did what in the Tahs disaster at the end of the game, I wouldn't have been surprised if any Oz team had made the same mistake. In some matters Oz rugby as a whole lacks rugby nous that goes beyond how they are coached.

I couldn't imagine a Munster team, for example, risking the win: their rugby is straight out of the Book of Job. Most other European rugby teams, who lack instinct in other rugby matters, also would have had the natural savvy to close the game out, and done it by rote.

Michael Foley's comments after the match do him great credit: it must have been a bitter pill to swallow. He took some of the load off the players, but there will be a speck of culpability within him.

I realise that I have not given any credit to the Reds for manufacturing a wonderful rugby moment, especially the actions of Tapuai and Shipperly, but I think that my observation will resonate with some Oz rugby fans.

Sorry, when someone serves up shit I don't politely smile and ask for more. I support the Waratahs and want them to win, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to switch off my critical faculties.

Is anyone saying either team played well? Compared to the other teams this weekend, particularly in SA and NZ, did either team look to be title contenders?

I have now read the rest of the thread, and it looks like my initial post covers it. I would add that I was thinking with about 2 mins to go how pissed I would be if I was a Reds supporter, as it looked like they would lose to a poor Waratahs side (obviously a brain fart coupled with a collective inability to defend averted that situation).

PS It was good to see that the organisers had a designated place for the kids to rush onto the ground (and they did rush) to get autographs.

All the Tahs stayed and signed and Samo came out and signed for some youngsters with Reds jerseys.

this is something Suncorp stadium has got completely wrong. I simple can't understand their attitude to punters on the field.

Waratahs have a new coach in Michael Foley, his first season as head coach, their attacking weapon Kurtley Beale gone, their halfback Luke Burgess is in France; and they have an injury list that reads like a who's who of their most experienced and dangerous players. Mitchell, Turner and Vickerman a big gap to fill. So its a lot of new combo's playing trying to get use to the new law interpretations. Add them all together and you get what ever a person want to call it that we witnessed this weekend.

5 tar's 1 red, 60m try win 4 points, just poor attitude thinking the Tar's have won........ no brain fart..... Attitude and cocky..... not trolling

It always intrigues me that in a game such as this so much focus of post-game comments is given to the last significant play. In my opinion the principal reason why the Waratahs did not have this one safely locked away long before the 80th minute was the dumbness of our forwards in giving away numerous kickable penalties at the breakdown. This is inexcusable, particularly when it should have been obvious to the thickest of them that the referee was closely policing this aspect of play.

My impression of rugby this year is counter rucking is all important. The nz games were master classes in it. The Tahs won a lot of ball off qld counter rucking.

Reds are going to need to control the breakdown a heap better to get quality ball to the backs. This frantically flinging it out shit has to stop.

I know! How close was that!? (should have punted on the 1-7 margin!) I haven't actually seen the game yet (I was at a mates party last night, no Fox no game) so I'll be watching the replay this arvo. After reading the comments here I'm interested to check out what happened. As someone said earlier it sounds a little like the round 1 Force v Reds game of last season.

Put it in perspective. It's a long season and it's going to be up and down with injuries and whatever. Least both teams are going to improve. Well, the Reds anyway!
