Waratahs vs Reds - Round 1 - 2012R01

I know this is moot - but did he get the ball down?

Watching it live, I was so concerned about the grounding that I missed the forward pass call.
I think he did - but not too sure if it was played immediately - still bloody impressive for a hooker who has been busting his gut in a forward - oriented game.

Not wanting to take anything away from Dom Shipperley- his effort was fantastic but IMHO the invlovement of Ben Tapuai was the critical element between Mckibbin's kick (thought it was a well placed kick actually) and Shipperly's great run.

The kick was fielded by Lucas and he was brought to ground immediately inside the Reds 22 (big advantage to the Waratahs at this point). Tapuai is first to the breakdown and grabs the ball, he steps away from the breakdown and hesitates ever so slightly (still a big advantage Waratahs).

Tapuai runs elusively for about 15 metres evading three or four defenders (Waratahs defensive line is disorganised with little time to react). As Tapuai is tackled he passes neatly to Gill (in space) to keep the Waratahs back peddling another five metres. Reds retain possession, two passes and Shipperley scores.

But I reckon Tapuai's contribution re: energy to get to the tackled player; quick decision to run; clever stepping run; and pass to team mate - turned what started as a reasonable kick for the Waratahs into a winning try for the Reds.

I dont know about MOTM, i think he might have been close to the best back on ground..

Tapuai was quite consistent at getting across the advantage line, and defensively Hangers and TC are both quite good so its a fair effort by Taps.

Must have been down hurt when our winger Shipperly put your blokes on ice I guess.
Love the slight change of pace and the call to take AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) on the outside. Very confident move and he smoked him. Seen it about ten times now and it still gets me out of my seat.

Mate, if he can out-sprint your wingers, forward pass or not, i dont care how often he goes down :)

Well, seeing as Shipperley then smoked half the Tahs team, I guess that makes TPN the fastest on the park!

Maybe TPN should've done the fastest man in rugby instead of Turner?

You'd have to back him over 25, right? :D

He got AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Horne in the inside. Foley was the cover he took on the outside.

Who knows why AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) was defending in the line.

He probably hadnt had time to get back after either being in the line on Tahs ball or chasing "the kick".
Not sure he should have been back because it was highly unlikely given the time that the Reds would kick ( how ironic!!) so if he could make a tackle that snuffed them out it was golden

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) finshed on the wing with foley at 15

I think it is how we can expect the Tahs to line up in the future

15 Foley
14 AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)

11 Kingston

Brankin Henry was pretty average

If we're going to be picky about the TPN disallowed try there's a couple of "hazy" items to be considered. A crappy quality recording can be found here;

1. TPN doesn't completely retire, he runs back but stops before passing the kicker or the onside player - I'm not that familiar with the offside rule, but I thought you had to continually move back to an onside position?

2. In any case, TPN moves forward towards the kicked ball before being put onside as shown here;

So, if TPN had actually fully retired or allowed Kingston to run pass him he wouldn't have been in a position to catch the ball?

Special mention to Chris Alcock and his defensive effort in the last few frantic seconds of the games.

When Tapuai picked up the ball after Lucas was tackled, he also slipped out of Kingston's attempted tackle only to have Alcock in front of him - so Alcock was more-or-less in the right defensive position (right side)

Tapuai was good eneough to get around Alcock. Then Alcock quickly moved across field to to atempt a tackle on Gill only for Alcock to be barrelled backwards (middle of the field).

Alcock quickly got to his feet came forward to join the defensive line opposite Harris. When Harris passed to Shipperley Alcock tracked across to attempt the cover tackle but Shipperly beat him for pace.

So Alcock attempted three tackles within about 20-25 seconds in three different parts of the field - good effort I reckon.

NSW had 67 percent possession compared to Queensland 33 percent. The difference in the end of the day was the Tackles made/missed. Seriously how do you end up with 67 percent possession and still lose the game?

NSW made 110 and missed 20 with a 87 percent success rate. Queensland 105/3 which is over 97 percent success rate. Horne was the main culprit and made 9 tackles and missed 5. Not something you want to see from a centre. Channel there can be exploited and I am sure the teams will pick it up. Pretorius like last year is missing them as well as he missed 3 and made 4.

Both of them set pieces especially the line outs were poor and that was giving good ball away.
