I've only ever seen the refs say no scrum. I've seen players ask for the lineout but refused. It's advantage for the knock on. It comes back to the knock on unless advantage is over.

Law 12: Knock-on or Throw forward
12.1 The outcome of a knock-on or throw forward
Quick throw-in after knock-on or throw forward
Add new 12.1(e)
Knock-on or throw forward into touch. When the ball goes into touch from a knock-on or throw
forward, the non-offending team will be offered the choice of a lineout at the point the ball crossed
the touch line or a scrum at the place of the knock-on or throw forward. The non-offending team
may exercise the former option by taking a quick throw-in.
Current Law 12.1(e) becomes 12.1(f)

Although I suspect Shiggins will think you made that up.

I've never seen a ref in force this. I've seen captains ask but refs refuse. Wouldn't be a first

Nope. Scrum. Unless advantage is over or he is the first ref to use that call

As boyo quotes, the law is option to non-offending team.
Pretty sure this changed prior to last season but it may have been longer ago than that.
I will concede that i cannot remember a team taking the line out prior to today.

Are you trolling

I wouldn't think so. I was thinking the same thing and posted the same thing lastyear. The Force are playing the same game the Tahs played in 2009-2011. They do not however have the big runners to pull it off and barely make the gain line. Defensively they are kept in the game by an outstanding backrow and mobile second row. Godwin is the only creative backline player with Cummins the most committed and reliable finisher.

The appointment of Foley was a huge mistake IMO as the Force need to play like the Reds and Tahs (under Chieka) to build a larger following and become self sufficient. They have the forwards to play the up tempo game and some of the backs. What they lack is the skills and tactical coaching.

Anyway a good first hit out by the Tahs. They would be quietly pleased but I am sure Chieka will be pointing out the inaccurate defence and rucks at times.

The only source of disappointment is the crowd. A beautiful sunday afternoon, and a very average size crowd. I truly hope that this picks up over the next few games as the Tahs really need that gate.

Tahs score 6 tries and win easily with alot of improvement in them.

Foley was pretty ordinary, Fat Cat had an absolute shocker.

Folau is a freak, Alofa looks the goods and answered some questions about his defence with a few good shots. Forced a turnover from Cummins. Thought Palu and hooper were the pick of the forwards and big poiteger had some good impact.

Great to start the season off with some Sunday Arvo rugby in the sun! No better way to watch the rugby IMO.

It was an interesting game though, the Tahs looked good in attack apart from some first round sloppiness. Foley led the team around well and combined pretty well with Beale. That combination will only get better as well. Folau was very impressive, his support play was fantastic, similar to Billy Slater almost in league, he always seemed to be popping up in the right place which is a very promising sign. I also noticed him chime in at first reciever a couple of times which was interesting to see, put the defense in two minds and opened a bit of a gap outwide.

The forwards did the job required of them, I thought Potgeiter was very impressive when he came on as well, added some aggression to the pack. Douglas was very good as well I thought, seemed to get through a lot of work. Skelton had some good moments and did well in the lead up to the first try, but he still has plenty of work to do to become a regular starter. Robinson dropped a fair bit of ball and I thought he had a pretty average game, TPN had a couple of good runs. I was very impressed with Paddy Ryan though, thought he made some good runs and worked a fair bit. I couldn't really tell what was happening in most of the scrums so I will have to watch the game back again.

The Tahs will need to work on their defensive structures though they seemed to be split open too often by a very poor force team. Against the Reds that will spell trouble. That will need to improve for next week, as will the sloppiness, and the accuracy at rucks.

But it was a good game to start the season off with, nice to see plenty of tries and sit out in the sun.

I was thinking the same thing, opening match and no opposition from any other code, don't know what the final figure was, but it looked 13,000-15,000. More matches like this are needed to bring the crowds back. We really need a baseline crowd of 25,000.

Why can the Waratahs not attract crowds? If that was the Reds playing like that on a Sunday afternoon there would be ~40000 people there

Force are never a drawcard, though, and your 40k figure is a bit much. The Reds WERE playing like that in round 1, 2011 where they played the Force on a Sunday arvo. They drew 26,000.

Tahs aren't there yet, and today's crowd was disappointing. But next week will be better v the Reds at Homebush, where they draw a bigger crowd. Baby steps.

Hasn't that only been since the Reds started winning?
Aussie sport fans only like it when teams win. Australian cricket is an example of this

Would any of the surprised Force supporters be interested in my share in the Nigerian lottery? The definition of madness is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result.

While our squad has improved, it's the equivalent of tinkering around the edges at this point. The path the Force have chosen of a slow build instead of buying established stars will take time.

Having said that, I don't have faith Foley is ever the man to deliver a title. But having a self imposed ban on calling for his head until after the 4th round we will just smile and enjoy the positive spin he will put on the loss.
