Putting the ball forward in the ground counts as playing the ball. Perfectly legal and always has been.

Only question mark was the obstruction.

The question with the grounding comes from AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) appearing to placing the ball backwards first. If he does that the he is no longer able to place it forwards.
